I've noticed rust on the rear of my muffler and I don't even ride in the rain although I have once or twice. Is this commonplace and if so, what have people done about it? Is it warranted? For a bike bought new in July and 3100 miles on it I didn't expect to see rust on the exhaust! |

Mine rusted sitting in a box. If it bothers you, get it warrantied, and then bbq paint the new one. Its steel, its gonna rust. |

I'll just leave it for now. I guess it just adds character to the bike. |

I had mine ceramic coated,(~$125 @ Lo-Co). It's been about a month, and so far so good. If it still looks good come spring, I'll post pics. Until then, I don't want to boast. |

Another thought, just give it a good scrubbing from time to time...

Yeah, I know the Uly is supposed to get dirty once in awhile but rust? Seems like Buell could do a little better in the rust proofing area. I'll just ride it and if it bothers me enough then I'll approach my local shop about it. Thanks for the feedback guys. |

Rusty Muffler, I like it, almost a good name for a porno actor, or a good screen name. Seems like they could go a little thicker with the paint, or powder-coat them. |

You could send it in to Drummer. My stock muffler had a little rust on it but after it came back from KD fab its been good ever since 2years + still no rust. The paint is better than stock not to mention the sound. |

Yes, there are many options available but the bottom line is that Buell should/could do more to improve the durability of the coating on the muffler. Why should I the buyer have to consider these options or lay out more $ to fix something that the MOCO skimped on? Just like the heat issue. While I know that most people just accept it as part of the Buell experience or make mods to it like wrapping the headers or lining the frame with heat tape and adding Odie's blanket, these are items that Buell really should address in manufacturing. Don't get me wrong, I love my Uly but there are some areas that if Buell would take the time to address it would make the Uly experience that much better. |

I'm worried about the valve rusting shut or open. Has anyone experienced/seen that happen before? |

Ulycan, I agree. If the individual can have a muffler ceramic coated for $125, a manufacturer should be able to do it for that or less considering bulk trade. I'd pay $125 more for a Ziebarted Uly. Plus, the individual saves on time a/o labor costs. Rant over. |

Ulykan, all the XB's going back to 03 have had issues with the rusting. It’s nothing new, and apparently Buell doesn’t seem to care to fix it. Hell the Uly has a different muff than the rest of the lineup, so that was their chance to fix it. The muffler has had minor changes over the years, but whatever change they made isn't related to rusting apparently. |

Froggy, Is this a "warranty" issue? If it is then it seems that the cost associated with replacing it would eventually catch up with Buell and they'd do something about it. I can't understand the logic of manufacturers. Could it be that so few owners complain about rust that Buell doesn't see it as a major issue? While on the subject of the MOCO and logic, if Buell is so customer oriented why don't they address some "real" issues like the heat? Ok, I'll get off of my soapbox now but methinks that Buell still has their head up their a$$ sometimes. The Uly is such a great bike that could be made almost perfect with a few inexpensive fixes here and there. I'll shut up now. Bob |

Ulykan, yes it is warranty. I am sure they have their reason for not using something more rust resistant. To be honest I don't know why. My guess is the same thing that happened with the Firebolt headlights, they got stuck in a contract and ended up fighting the vendor about it, thats why it took so long to get that resolved. I don't work for Buell, but there has got to be a legit reason why this hasn't been resolved. And the heat issue? That is subjective. It takes me getting stuck in traffic on a 100+ degree day in full riding gear before I notice the heat, and then its just my right leg is warmer than the left. That is with 2 different Buell's that I have put over 15k miles on each, and then riding tons of demo bikes, friends and family bikes too. From my observations it seems like 50% of the heat issues are user error. Reposition yourself on the bike and see if that helps. Make sure you are wearing proper riding gear too. |

Hi Froggy, I do understand that the heat is subjective and bothers some more than others. Still, it is an issue that should be addressed. Even motojournalists mention it in their reviews. I believe in proper riding gear too and wear it but even with that the heat is still bothersome. A 100 mile ride yesterday with temps in the mid sixties the heat was at times very uncomfortable when the wind was from the right direction. For some it's a minor point yet for others it is a killer. I'll say it again, the Uly is a wonderful bike and I truly enjoy mine more than either of the two Sportsters I've owned but Buell still needs to pay more attention to some of the issues that owners find annoying and sometimes bothersome. Thanks for your input. You've been very informative and helpful. This is what makes this such a great community. |
