Acually it is more of a concern. As some of you know, I'm on my second Uly. My first one was a '06 and it had quite a bit of warranty work done on it. Three drive belts, both sprokets, idler pulley, fork seals, swing arm, rear wheel, rear bearings, axle, and some other assorted items. (It suffered a catastrophic rear wheel bearing failure) About a month ago the motor co sent me a survey wanting to know more about my riding habits. They asked about off roading, wheelies, stoppies, rough roads, and more. I was honest and told them excatly how I ride my bike. I engage in all of the above quite regularly. My question is: Does anyone know if the factory might use this information to deny warranty work on my bike in the future? My new '08 has about 18 months of the warranty left and I appreciate the great warranty service I recieve from my dealer. However I realize the factory has the final say. In hindsight maybe I should not have been so honest...... Any opinions/experences on this? I think it would be very unlikely. 1 - It would be awful PR. 2 - It would be the last time they got real info from a survey. | ||

I think Erik himself considers what many others consider abuse to be normal riding. I wouldn't worry about it as I doubt you're tougher on a bike than him. | ||

I doubt you will have any issues with your warranty. They would have to figure out that you own the newer bike, and then somehow black flag the VIN like a salvage title. Nissan and Mitsubishi have been scolded online a handful of times for invalidating warrantees because they accuse the owners of being abusive. I love the fact that I have had all my warranty work done with little to no issue from the dealer, and they have seen my YouTube videos. Of course, my belt recently snapped, my bike is under warranty. Did I take it in? No, mostly because I do not have the stone guards, and the belt has had more than its fair share of abuse from me off roading, wheelies, stoppies, jumps, and whatever the hell else I do when I’m bored. If I took it in, honestly I don’t know if they would have warranteed it, as this failure was clearly my fault. But then again, they footed the bill without even looking at my bike when my short windshield flew off at 130mph. | ||

Jlance- I agree with both your points.....good insight. Furthermore, I've heard of a lot of warranty denials here on BadWeB, but never bacause the factory had some info on someone's riding habits. Skinstains- I agree with you as well about Erik's riding style. I know my bike is not abused or neglicted. IMO, my bike is being used for it's intended purpose. Buells are meant to be ridden, and like any machine, they sometimes suffer mechanical failures. It's just nice to rely on the factory/dealer to provide the parts and labor.  | ||

Froggy- My dealer has also gone way beyond what most dealers have done, as far as warranty work for me. I just don't want to think by them taking such good care of me and my bike they could get scolded by the mothership. (the Buell tech knows how my bike is used.....it is rather obvious) And BTW, one of the big hitters in what bike to buy when I decided to move to a new bike was the exceptional warranty work I recieved on my '06. I was so pleased with the entire ownership experence on my '06, I bought an '08.  (Message edited by debueller on November 18, 2008) | ||

I would think they are using the info, for market research. Possibly building a more desirable machine, for how MOST of the users ride. From what I gather, (and I'm probably wrong), we are older, more experienced riders. And just want to go blast around, some off-road, but usually riding pretty hard. | ||

A tank is designed to go into battle, but don't expect the manufacture to do warranty when the tracks get blown off. The same logic applies to motorcycles. | ||

It doesnt say anywhere in the manual to not do wheelies, stoppies, or go off-road. Besides, you "lied" on the survey or did you ahem accidentally misread the question? |
