I was recently told by an aircraft engine mechanic that synthetic engine oil will flow significantly better when cold, and hence, lubricate better at start up where, according to him, 80% of engine wear occurs. Since I ride some in the winter, and being as I am, always skeptical, I decided to test this out for myself. I did this in order to help me understand the viscosity of both oils below freezing. A small sample of both SYN3 20w50 and Std. HD 20w50 were stored overnight in the freezer. The samples were then taped to a 32" square Coroplast sheet that was elevated 2" on one side and level on the other. Both containers were dumped at the same time and photos were taken at 3, 6 and 10 seconds. The difference was striking! Even after I took the Coroplast board outside, the synthetic oil coated the board nearly twice as far down the board as the Std. HD oil....amazing. . SYN3 vs HD Std. (20w50 Weight) SYN3 vs HD Std. @ 3 sec. SYN3 vs. HD Std. @ 6 sec. SYN3 vs. HD Std. @ 10 sec. . |

I love simple beauty of observable empirical evidence to verify claims. Thanks Johnboy |

How about trying it with hot oil? Perhaps heating the cups of oil in boiling water and then comparing the flow rates. BTW HD 20w50 isn't recommended for below 40F Pete |

This is great info but there is a huge difference bewteen different brands of oil both synthetic and dino. The reference to the 20 and the 50 are done at specific temperatures. Outside of those temps there could be a huge difference between one brand and another. |
