I got a check engine light for overcharging a couple weeks ago. I verified the Voltage @13+ idle 19+ @ 4000 rpm. The bike has ~19K miles and so far has had nearly every malady I've seen on the BWB. I recieved a new VR and installed it. No change in the voltage output. I verified the 77 connector was in good shape and strapped. Any ideas guys? Rich |

Sounds familiar... I was riding and (FB Volatage monitor showed it was low). Got home and starting checking things.. mine was reading 17.2 at 3000 rpm. Change the VR.. not luck. More Testing.. in my case I had a grounded stator. I replaced the stator and VR.. all is well. (I never got a check engine light thought). I may have confused the issue a bit.. with my lack of electrical experiance... but who knows. The head light was unplugged.. could that make it read that much higher?? This is the original thread ... ?? might help ?? http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/388675.html?1219347296 (Message edited by gamdh on October 16, 2008) |

I'll check that next. I'll be honest I won't be changing it. Thanks. Rich |

If its really a new regulator, then I'd be checking grounds and connectors. It's a shunt regulator, so it should regulate or die trying.... unless it does not have a good path to ground. |

+1 to what Reepicheep said. Seems like it has to be some sort of ground problem. |

Woohoo surplus electricity! Add a tesla coil and put an RF antenna on top of your helmet.Sell the excess energy to the "Grid" and get paid to ride! LOL! BC Steve |

I get to show my ignorance. What grounds are on the regulator? There were 2 plug in connections. 1 77 and 1 for the stator and 3 bolts for attaching it to the frame. I did not see any other grounds available to me??? Rich |

I am pretty sure the bolt to the frame is the ground for the regulator, but don't have my schematic here in front of me. Make sure the VR attaches at some point with bare metal to bare metal. There is also a ground wire between the battery and the frame, that completes the circuit. |

Gamdh called it. Regulator hooked up the the bike makes 16-19v. Reg. unhooked 24+ volts. The stator is gounded on all three legs. Thanks to all who replied... If you're overcharging check for ground at the stator plug. Rich |
