The clutch hub bearing on my XT decided to take a dump. Unfortunately, when it quit, it took most of the clutch with it. It's going to be a week before I get it back.
Friday is supposed to be in the 70s.
Oh, well. Shit happens.

Well that does suck. First time I've heard of that failure on a Uly.

Time to buy a cheap back-up bike! You don't want to miss good riding weather.

The story gets better. This morning Terri called me from the side of I-95. Her Ss was dead. (Symptoms are that it wasn't charging). I jumped in my Ranger pick up to go retrieve her and the bike, and the alternator in the truck was frozen. I'm afraid to go near Andrea's Blast; it would probably blow up! Fortunately, we still have Terri's Cobalt to get around in.
I'm beginning to think I've been swatted by the Shit Fairy.

Hah! Serves you right! You can't ride 50k miles over 2 Ulys without a visit from the Shit Fairy : )

Now go and trade in for a Yamazuki or something. I will give you $200 for the XT : )

My old dodge used to lock up its alternator if I left it alone for a month or so.
I always had to take the belt off and get it to turn with a huge pair of pliers and then the belt would be able to spin it up.

The iron poles inside would corrode and swell up, locking it.

I'll give you $225(after the warranty work is done of course). That will get you a good start on a new Guzzi!

Oh what the heck! I will go $300 and take both of those shit bikes off your hands.

Crusty did you seal up the clutch cable adjuster dust boot? Is it possible that you got some water in the tyranny from the dist boot not being sealed?

What actually failed? I replaced the clutch hub needle bearing at about 42K miles because it was making noise. Is that bearing what caused your hub failure?

I get condensation in the tranny which doesn't get burned off due to my short (5 mile) commute in relatively cold weather (even though I do a "long" ride almost every weekend). I started the whole "creamy paste" discussion.

Dr_G, What size is that bearing? I've got my primary apart in the garage as we speak, not a bad time to stick a new one in.

I'm assuming you're referring to the open bearing that sits on the adjuster mechanism?

Dr Greg; I haven't seen it, but from the description of the damage, I think so (it's the needle bearing between the clutch hub and clutch basket). It did enough damage that the shop is replacing the entire clutch.
M singer; I don't seal the adjuster boot. I've never had enough water in my Tranny oil to count, and I've ridden through some frog stranglers. I had changed the tranny oil the previous week (I change it every 3,000 miles) and there was no sign of water.
On a positive note; Terri's Ss had a bad Voltage Regulator, and it's all set. She'll be able to ride this weekend, even if I can't.

Crusty, ah......so......my bids on your bikes won't be considered then?

Sorry. I know you will be back to permagrin soon!

Vern; I gave your bids all the due consideration they deserved. If you had offered another $50.00 for the truck, I might have gone for the deal, but I've reluctantly decided to hang on to everything for now.
Sorry.
