No longer stuck in 5th - Zuhl nailed it!! A spring broke on the pawl - simple fix. The aspect of this that is most frustating is that sportsters have similar mechanical arrangement, yet the Harley dealer in Eugene never even offered to take a look. Can understand them not wanting to 'split the case' But this would have been a 30 min job to remove the primary cover & take a peak - instead of sending me 200mi back to Oly in 5th gear. Oh well, another lesson learned for self sufficiency... and as Willie sez - "I'm on the road again." Have now added a SPRING to the belt, bearings, fuses & clutch cable in the spare parts kit. Thanks all for your support and helpful comments. j |

Glad you got it sorted out. Personally I wouldn't bother with the spring in the emergency kit, as something like that breaking again would be rare unless you got another major issue. If you were to carry every potential breaking item, you would need headlight bulbs, random screws, fuses, turn signal bulbs, turn signal flasher, a horn, a few spark plugs, plug wires, a few tires, throttle and brake cables, random washers, and some mud to cover up all the scratches and nicks you will get over the years. |

Yeah - I'd probably need a trailer too. I only carry the 'usual suspects' that will leave you stranded if ya ain't got 'em. Besides...the tires and spare transmission won't fit in my top case anyway. j |

Jphish, Glad to hear about the easy fix. It looks like it is going to be a pretty nice weekend. Better get out and ride it now. My gf and I are heading to Ocean Shores this weekend to enjoy the fall weather and do some riding on the beach. |

I will be spending Christmas at Ocean Shores this year at the Worldmark joint. I like that place! |

Just a little farther up the road @ Moclips is a funky little place called Ocean Crest -exceptional views with a great resturant. Enjoy wherever you are - cant go wrong being at the ocean this weekend. Lot's of beach and very few people. |

Jphish, Glad your problem has been resolved. Sometimes I long for a 6 speed, 1 would definitely not be enough ! |

Yeah - felt like a twist N' Go Piaggio or something...except, without the smooth take off. |
