Well...I have to say...my Ulysses is the first and ONLY bike I've ever had leave me stranded on the side of the road. I had a stator/regulator failure. Luckily, I was only about 5 miles from my house, and my wife came and picked me up and I went home and fetched my trailer.

That being said, I LOVE my Ulysses still. It's the most comfortable, most fun touring bike I've ever owned. It does have some warts, but the overall package is good.

If I were to take a long trip, I'd take my spare belt and the required tools to do the road side change. Otherwise, just check the fluids, and ride the sucker!

Singer,
I see you figured out how to update your profile. You'd better take a nap and rest that worrying mind of yours.

Just under 37,000 miles.

I have been picked up by the wife twice. First caused by tire, Second caused by low side with a big drop.

Look at the profile for a play by play. So far the Uly is the most reliable bike I have had. I would not hesitate to ride it across the country just as soon as I get my tires changed out.

My '07 Uly has only got about 7K miles on it since I got it last July, but three 600 mile trips this summer and a lot of in town riding with no (i.e. zero) issues. I've spent more money on do-dads and gadgets for this bike than any I've owned, I guess that means I plan to keep it for awhile.....

Crusy, Dr Greg has over 50 K on his Uly but he has had his share of problems with some that disabled the bike. Broken belt for one.

Yup; original belt broke at 45K miles when I fell over. I had the spare and tools with me and was back riding half an hour later.

No other "disabling" failures. Approaching 55K miles now. Have heard of a Uly w/over 90K miles and owner reports nothing consequential.

My '06 Uly has 33,000 miles on it and I would not hesitate to ride it anywhere. It kinda left me hanging once with a clutch cable that broke. I could have ridden it in but at the time as a HOG/BRAG member I had towing covered. It has had some other problems but none that canceled any trips or did more than test my McGiver-abilities.

I have never found a bike that I like to ride any where near as much as the Uly. I just demo'd a KTM Super Duke and found it to be a good ride, although slight inputs make it twitchy in mid corner, and I no longer like chain slop, but it lacks the smoothness of my Uly and its permagrin factor.

If you don't think that it will make a 200 mile trip perhaps it is not the machine for you. If you are serious about this question for a Ulysses it is telling that you have never purchased any new vehicle.

Armymedic, try changing your plugs. There are many threads about fouled plugs and cold starting your Ulysses.

Sometimes reading the boards can lead one to paranoia ....it sure did me when I bought my new-to-me 06 in March this year. The previous owner told me not to worry too much and just ride it. Did I do that? Nah, swapped out rear bearings at tire change around 13k. I could've sworn they felt gritty! But truly I might've spent too much time lurking/reading and looking for problems to occur. Now I ride when work lets me (wish I could've made it down last weekend!) and if I have a free moment... maybe wash the poor thing. I'm not a high-mileage guy like some of the other fellas on the board but 9k since March (about 23k now) and only problems I've had were self-induced or imagined. I'm about ready for my third rear tire (they seem to be lasting less and less) and my biggest problem is keeping a straight face when the tire guy looks at my chicken strip (I'm getting better, really). Don't neglect the required maintenance (and there isn't much) but otherwise....don't worry and ride!

Etennuly- Yes, I just went and grabbed some new plugs. Something tells me when I pull my plugs I'm going to see at least one of them fouled.

I bought my '06 Uly at the last minute on the 3rd day of my annual 2 week bike trip in the fall of '06.I put 2800 miles on it in 10 days with 0 problems other than a wore out back tire.I would not hesitate to ride it any long distance as long as I can get tires. It seems that twisty roads & Uly's are tough on tires!

Electraglider_1997, do you have a big mouth in person or are you just a coward that likes to mouth off on line? I noticed from your profile that you are "Liberal by definition and proud of it"...figures.

44,000 miles and the most trouble I have had with my ULY is which tire to mount next. With any machine there are parts that wearout and break. Best you can do is be ready to replace them when they do break. I recommend that the higher wear or hard to get items buy now before they fail so you can continue to ride instead of waiting for the Buell parts fairy to deliver your parts. Belt, VR, levers, cables and fan. Thats about $400 in on hand parts that will keep the smiles and the miles going. Even if it is under warranty the on hand spares will get you home and riding while the warranty parts come in.

Tell me what is wrong with being Liberal? USMC 1975-1979. Just so you know that I served. How about yourself? I only ask because I've found that many who spew terms like coward and the like have never served. Just something I've noticed.

Liberal: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant ...
having political or social views favoring reform and progress
tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition
a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties

Hey Electraglider, there is nothing wrong with being a Liberal. Join the club. We don't get a lot of Right wing conservatives here as most of them are on the Harley Boards lol. Just poking a bit of fun. That's something us Liberals do better than those who may be up tight conservatives types.

The 06 Uly is my second New Buell. I have never been stranded with either one and come to think of it I have never been stranded with any bike I have owned. Lots of bikes and tons of miles in 40 years of riding. Maybne I have the golden liberal touch lol.

Oh yea just a quick update to keep this thread kind of on topic, rode another 5 or 600 miles yesterday, got home with no issues. : (
I am a bit disappointed, I like it when little things go wrong, as it gives me a chance to work on the bike, get more acquainted with it, and become more knowledgeable.

Electraglider_1997 I am a former Marine myself and also a former police officer.

Your behavior towards me in this and other threads has not been consistent with the "broad-mindedness" and "tolerant" description that you have posted of a liberal.

I don't see anything wrong with "your" description of a liberal. I would describe a liberal different then you have but, I'm not going to go there right now. This thread has gotten far enough off topic already.

With all of that out of the way now, answer my question. Do you have a big mouth in person or are you just a coward that likes to mouth off on line?

Adamd, I find it interesting that you have chose to share that rather the issues that you have listed in your profile:

"front rotor warped (7000kms)
Side stand bolts broke(9000kms)
Belt broke(11886kms)
*Front rotor changed(11886kms)
How can Buell improve their motorcycles?: Keep R&D'in on belts.

I agree with you that Buell needs more R&D on the belts. Maybe the 4th time will be the charm with the current belt.

Honestly the only real killer part of the servicing is the fork oil change at 10k intervals. It is about 5hrs labor at your dealer. Haven't attempted it on my own yet as I lack the skill to do it.

Rah, thats for the entire service, but forks alone eat up most of it. Call your dealer for a quote.
