Went out for a ride tonight and on the way back it felt like I was getting a flat rear tire. Pulled over but the tires are fine, nothing seemed to be falling off so I stared riding again. Was able to limp home but the bike is spooky to ride, can't lean at all and it feels just like a rear tire going flat but the rear tire is fine. Anyone have ideas ? My best guess is wheel bearings but at 5,700 miles ? 06 ULY with 5,700 Miles |

Just put new bearings in my sportster, it had the same symptoms. Yamaha says to check for smoothness and replace if needed wheel bearings every 6 months or 4000 miles. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/service/viewma nuals/viewmanuals.aspx?ls=star |

Sounds like wheel bearings to me. Ya never know about those. Some are fine for many miles and others fail unpredictably??? Mine went 30K before I changed them and they still seemed OK. Others have failed very early. Nobody really has been able to positively identify a single cause but current theory has that water intrusion is somewhat common but I think the inner spacer is slightly too long and causing side-loading of the roller bearings. Probably a combination of these issues but who really knows. BC Steve |

Your wheel may be screwed if the bearing went that far south and you rode it for any length.....Hope you can get it warranty covered if so... BC Steve |

Seem's like it may be the wheel bearings. Went back and did a kick test of the front and rear wheels from the side .. front is nice and solid .. rear .. something is loose. I'll have to pull it apart in tomorrow .. crud. luckly I wasn't that far from home. |

Eric- Sure sounds like wheel bearings. If you just look closely at the bearings and especially the area around the seals, you may be able to confirm this without taking anything apart. If there's much grease spread around, especially if it contains metal bits, that's your problem. As to what to replace them with, Buell evidently has NTN bearings with improved seals now. Others have had good results with SKF's ($30 each at bearing suppliers). Also see my previous thread on ATV bearings that will fit. |

JInance - Wow thanks. On closer inspection the drivebelt side rear bearing has a bead of very fine metal shavings leaking out. don't think the outside race has spun in the wheel but I guess I won't know till I get it apart. That's the other issue. I ordered a set of the new buell bearings from stone-mountain HD but ... there not in stock and it's going to about a week before there in. Tempted to go with the SFK's so I can get back on the bike. I'm already going into withdraw. Doing it myself so I hope I can get them installed ok. Doing a lot of search's to see how it's done. seems to be somewhat of a pain. |

ok .. now I'm a bit pissed. I picked up some SKF bearings today ( Thanks for the link Jlnance I could almost walk there from my office ) and was reading post's here and on ADV on how to get the wheel off and replace the bearings ( I have a service manual on order ) when I noticed something. fellow bullers help me out here but I think there should be a spacer on the drive belt side over the axle between the swingarm and the bearing ? Drive belt side is just axle with circular grease marks on it. I had a rear tire put on by a HD/Buell Dealer in July (ish) .. If there should be a spacer there I'm calling them in the morning to see what can be worked out. Here's a bad cell PIC

There is just a machined shoulder on the axle on the drive belt side - no spacer. |
