I think I had a dose of the dreaded BAS failure that I read so much about here. I was flogging my 2008 on a highway sweeper and when I got to the top of the hill, the engine quit. I almost panicked but then I remembered what this board said to do. I turned off the handlebar switch and turned it back on and sure enough the engine ran fine like nothing happened. Could someone tell me where the sensor is found on 2008 and what it looks like? Perhaps it's just loose or something. |

If its a 1 time thing, I wouldn't worry about it. If its reoccuring issue than we will help you to trouble shoot. The BAS i located in the tail section, right behind the tail light and the seat latch. |

Good, you can help ME troubleshoot! I had a new BAS under warranty, now the warranty is expired. Yep, you guessed it, a week after the replacement I had the same failure. I cleaned all the BAS connections in the extension harness and used dielectric grease, and went a couple months before it happened again. Just had another failure this week as I was merging onto the highway (not a great situation). With a failure rate about once every 2-4 weeks, I am in intermittent hell. |

Hey Red, Have you tried to use ecmspy to turn it off? I would rather do without it than be in hell for it. An off idle stumble or engine shut off could get me squashed like a bug in Miami traffic. |

Yeah, when we took our trip to SW CO that is what I did. However, it seems like my choices are: 1) Turn it off, and hope the bike never finds itself on its side, running, and trying to suck oil out of the sump and pulling only air, or 2) Have a totally unpredictable though infrequent engine stall that could put the bike on its side NOT running in the worst possible situation! I'd like to fix it or get it fixed really. If no option is available, I may very well just turn it off, but I would rather not. I PMd Court to see about covering it since it was reported within the warranty period. Always wanting to find SOME bright side... I suppose if I turned it off I could regain some nifty tail storage space. Just about the size of my tire repair kit. (Message edited by Red_Chili on September 25, 2008) |

Could someone tell me where the sensor is found on 2008 and what it looks like? From what I have seen it is in the same place, on the same bracket on the 08 as it is on the retrofitted 06/07's. That is in the rear, under seat near seat lock. Black oval type thing on an aluminum bracket.} |

So I contacted Court, and he told me to call Buell CS with my VIN, and that they were up to speed on the BAS issue and assisting me. I didn't ride in yesterday so I was going to call Buell CS when I got home. But before I could, John Selensky with Buell called ME and had the info, and we discussed the symptoms and what has been done so far (BAS recall of course, and then BAS replacement - and my cleaning the connections and using dielectric grease). He suggested a possible fix: I do not have the ECM protecting block, the "Seat Travel Limiter", N0903.1AK. He will contact Larz at Rocky Mountain H-D and get the part there ASAP. It seems very plausible to me that an intermittent connection due to seat pressure could have the very same symptoms as a failing BAS. Not that I am a Ft Bstrd or anything... LOL. Fatty, has your dealer looked at this? And though I am out of warranty a month, they have no problem covering it to resolution. This is the second time I have had any dealings with Buell CS and both times have been the same: OVER THE TOP customer service. I do application support for a custom software shop and Buell inspires me to emulate them. So tell me Buell doesn't ROCK! (Message edited by Red_Chili on September 26, 2008) |
