My XT owner's manual has the first service at 1,000 miles. Any thoughts on whether to have "just" an oil change sooner? When I had my Big Bear Chopper (RevTech engine), I changed the oil at 500 miles on the new engine. Thanks for any info. | ||

If it makes you feel better, change it sooner. I don't think you will hurt a thing by waiting until 1k though. | ||

A lot of folks here change oil early and often during the break in. I changed mine at 100 and 1000. Others have gone 100, 500, 1000 or even 50, 100, 500, and 1000. There's nothing special about the factory fill oil so you sure won't hurt anything by changing it "too soon". | ||

FWIW, I changed my oil at 200mi and 500mi ...just the oil, then had the 1,000mi service done (w/ oil 'n filter)....and there were fragment of metal on the plug both times I changed oil. Now I change oil every 2,000mi and filters every 4,000mi. I use std. oil. . | ||

Change your oil whenever you want, (Oil is cheaper than a damaged engine). Just remember to wrap your exhaust, and behind the oil filter with aluminum foil. then when the oil runs all over everything, (and it will), it is an easier clean up. Don't use plastic wrap, cause it can melt to a warm exhaust. also DO NOT use the recommended torque from the manual, It's too high, also use teflon paste on the thread of the plug. | ||

Regardless of how often you change oil, I'd change the filter with it. Clean oil in a dirty filter? C'mon, they are like 6 bucks. | ||

People don't like to change the filter, because they have to mess around with the chin guard, but to tell you the truth, It's pretty easy to take off- clean everything up and put back on. Just remember the 242 (blue ) loctite on the screws. Filters are More important than the oil, because this will take the nasties out (down to 5 micron), pretty small. So use a good (name brand ) filter. Just my .02 | ||

I changed mine after the 30 mile ride home and then again at 250 miles and then 500. Now every 2000 +/- with Syn3 and Formula+. | ||

""Filters are More important than the oil, ..." I don't think so. If filters were more important, your oil wouldn't get dirty, if you changed filters enough. Oil breaks down and gets dirty - filters just trap larger particles. . | ||
