As nice as it looks, I think the HM (and the BMW HP2, for that matter) are hammers without nails.

Have you ridden a Hypermotard ?

Hammers aren't just for hitting nails.

Plus, I don't think Treadmarks is looking to replace the Uly, and the HM definitely doesn't do that. At least not how I use either.

My wife has a Monster, and I think it's much better around town than hers. As long
as you can show some restraint. The HM fosters behaviour that can be frowned upon.

Thanks for the wisdom Brother EG, but I have been craving one of these ever since they came out. Already got the significant others buy in, but will probably have to sell the softail to spring for the S model.

The limited range is a concern for me Old_mil, but I am looking into it to see if there are any options. I'm not really looking for an off road bike or a replacement for the Uly. More like a back/side road blaster and work and back now and then. Although the Hyper and the Uly share alot of performance attributes, they are considerably different bikes. The only bike to beat the uly to the top of pikes peak in the 1200cc class was a hyper, which was followed by two ulys and another hyper.

I think the only thing holding me back now is finding a dealer who wants to sell a hyper. And which color to pick, ticket me red or run me over black.

This is my favorite vid:

though I'd love to see Xaus do the same thing on a Uly...with bags. I bet it would do it just fine!

Red for sure. Its a Ducati. The only Duc that looks nice in a color other than red is the white 848 in my opinion. Even though, as it is well discussed on here, black IS faster. : )

Try Progressive or Sentry the tend to be less expensive insurers for bikes

Those ducs are all great, but *somebody* needs to take them out and actually take a corner or two. Or at least fake it in a parking lot with some little tight turns.

It's depressing to see chicken strips that big on that kind of bike... so much wasted potential...

If I do get a duc, I'll try to remember that Bill.

Remember, not everyone has curves to play on.

Hell, the chicken strips on my uly are so big....that everywhere I go a KFC truck follows me with high hopes.

Is the SM the same bike as the Multistrada other than a bigger tank and more comphy riding position? Getting one of these babies might be like waking up to find out you got drunk and married Britney Spears..."Oh Lord it was fun but what have I done?" Get us one Tread... I am nuts..I like em too..

A8,
The MS has no beak! And it has a windscreen and more ugly fairing. I wonder the same thing though - is it the same powerplant and chassis?

I'd like a mixture of the two - a beak, no windscreen (or a tiny one) no fairing, a big fuel capacity, standard ergos and a long day saddle (some of which of course, might not be the case for either).

In other words, I want Ducati to make a Uly with a big fuel tank.

Same engine and a chassis based on the Multistrada if I remember correctly. Have articles on it at home.

I called Progressive who I insure my bikes with ...They quoted me a price on the Hyper with a $250.00 deductable on collision at $1,093 and $719.00 with no collision.. This are per year. The Multistrada was $523.00 per year with no collision and $705.00 with the $250.00 deductible for collision..so its about $400 more per year to ride the Hyper with a collision policy..Progressive said the Hyper was in a different "class" than the Multi...and the "S" model and the standard were the same price. Brittany is expensive...

The Hyper and the Uly are really 2 different bikes with 2 different missions. If you have curves near to your house the Hyper would be a waaaay fun ride. You could only take the highway for about 45 minutes max.(or I could only stand it that long). The seat has been described as a "weapon of ass destruction"... great for the twisties but no fun for a long ride.
I couldn't have it as my only bike, but if I could afford it as a second or third.......

Just to set the record straight, this quote was in reference to the original Multistrada 1000, which was improved (some) the following year.

The HM seat is a little better.

Plus there are two additional Ducati Performance seats to pick from.

Remember, not everyone has curves to play on.

A lot of people buying the Hypermotard are buying them because they have the "style" they like, not to push hard. They pay for the bike, and would prefer not to risk sliding it down the road. Understandable.

However:

My peg sliders are beveled on both sides and the Colonel isn't looking at my rear tire. Most of that is just from riding here in the South Florida twisties. (Exit and entrance ramps)

I like the style. If I buy, It wont be a track bike or beater, thats for sure. It will getting all my attention, while the uly gives me the deathray look!

Scott,

I got your PM. My dealer down south pretty much sucks. I talked to powersportsmiami yesterday and they have red and black S models in stock, but are sticking to MSRP. The sales guy says they are harley friendly on trades and cooperates with petersons, the dealer I bought my harley from.

I will go see them today and see what the numbers look like.

The wife is out of town for 4 days....I have a good insurance quote.....no telling what will happen

The two must have mods so far are the DP seat and windscreen. I will ask if I can get them with the bike. Anyone try the DP seat on the HM? Is it any better as far as comfort?

Things went good at the duc dealer today. Filled out a few papers, gave him some pics of the softail. I told him what I had to have for it, he made the phone call and said he could do it, but would have more info for me tomorrow. Sitting on that bike felt so tardish. The bike is soo small compared to the uly, and how they got an 1100cc air cooled engine to fit without fattening the bike is beyond me. There is a button on the left grip that lets you cycle through all of the electronic menu functions. That was pretty cool. The bike felt very light, and narrow where it needed to be. The pegs and lower controls were in the perfect location for me. I was surprised at the level of attention to detail that just stands out on this bike.

Picked it up from DucatiMiami yesterday. Pretty cool dealer, and they have tons of eye candy to look at while you're there.

Been learning bout the bike at ducati.ms forums. After purchase to do list is about the same as the uly. Adjust throttle cables, tighten battery cables and adjust suspension. Got lucky on the suspension settings as a racer/hooligan the the same weight as me posted his settings and I tried them. Sweet ride. I got the "S" model with the carbon goodies, ohlins suspension and forged wheels. About the same rake and trail as the uly and feels like the XR650 tard I had last year, only waaay faster. Six speed is the bomb. Feels light as a feather compared to the uly. I will get some pics this afternoon.
