A couple more things that I had thought of: I will most likely be running my 06 Uly, and I know they changed the forks/tubes (not too sure what it was) to a beefier design-should I look into doing that on my Uly? I know some guys have done it but I think stated their steering lock wont work now. The other thing is a steering stabilizer. I have never used one of felt the need to use one, but would a stabilizer be beneficial in this situation? |

Chris: You may or may not need to make that change. The XT uses the same setup as your 06. It might make sense to try riding gravel/dirt with the existing setup, see hoe you and it "match" then make the decision after that. YRMV Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

I might have found another Uly rider from Austria that is quiet interested. I have meet him at the German Buell Camp and he is really an iron butt. Let's see what he will decide. Ride safe Werner |

Going to do the RawHyde class this winter, and another trip into Baja on the Yami again. And probably planning a long disappearing act across the state on only dirt roads for spring. I think if I get the request in, 2 years in advance that they would have to let me off to do it. I will probably have over 50k on the CityX by then. |

Answer by DataDaddy about what he was going to ride in the 2010 ALCAN. He rode the 2006 on a KLR and finished. Basically, I'm a ride what you have kinda guy. If you have fun riding it then that's the bike for you. I don't care for the way my Vstrom handles on gravel... I am working on figuring out why and making some corrections.... The run up the Canol road (~300 something miles of gravel) was way fun on the KLR but it would be fun on any bike you are comfortable on gravel with. I didn't have any problems making the transits. I couldn't run at 100+ with some of the big bikes when we were in the Yukon... but 80 is plenty fast and burns the gas plenty fast enough. On the dirt and gravel, I was as fast or faster than the big bikes. KLRs go the same speed no matter the surface Whatever you choose to ride, be comfortable on all surfaces with it and make sure the ergos are comfortable for you. That is the key for long day after long day. If your ass is screaming after 300 miles, it will be screaming every day after 300 miles Take the time to get your bike sorted and spend time on it. Everything is gravy after that __________________ Interesting and good information. Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 (Message edited by buelldualsport on July 25, 2008) |

Ok, I haven't read every post on the thread but... I think it was Alchemy that mentioned frost heaves. Ha, ha....I forgot about them! Sinister little things for sure! The AK DOT does a fantastic job of posting warning signs* but they're only human. After you cross a few heaves you'll know what to look for, just pay attention. * Sometimes the "signs" are just little orange flags placed along the side of the road. Buelldualsport...I didn't know the extent of the trip when you asked about tires BUT I still stand by my comments The Dunlops or Pirellis will be ok, just take spares. Someone else mentioned it but I would ABSOLUTELY take a couple of sets of spare wheel bearings. The dust is very powdery and very fine, kinda like baby powder. Also as mentioned...It doesn't get dark during the summer! You could pack on a whole bunch of miles in a day. I would keep a small bottle of window cleaner or some kind of handie wipe kinda thing to clean your faceshield....the bugs are relentless (and juicy!). I didn't pour over the route map but it looks like there is a good bit of paved road.....the Uly will eat that up! Have fun PS: $2K isn't bad for all that's included. |

Snub: Thanks. Appreciate the update. Good input about the tires. Spares and patch kits seem to be the order of the day. Once again, thanks Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

Bad news. I'm back in the Hospital with a slipped disc. Will have surgery on Monday. Cross your fingers that everything goes well. Last November I had the same problem. Took me till April to halfway recover. Cross your fingers guys. Hopefully this is the last shit that happens before 2010. Ride safe Werner |

Ouch, hope it all goes well. They seem to be making progress on quick recoveries these days. You have got some time so it should be doable. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. |

BTW - Current dealer locations may not show Yellowknife NWT now has an HD store - actual mechanics with some motorcycle parts... not just leathervested teddybears and doo-rags to sell. Also carry snowmobiles in case the weather changes. NWT, Yukon & Alaska having a cool summer this year. Don't know the exact route of your adventure but there aint another dealer within many hundreds of miles. FYI |

Survived surgery and on my way to recover. Thanks for all your good wishes. Doctors see no problems, even for my Biktoberfest trip across the big ocean in October. But first I have to go to Rehab for 3 to 4 weeks starting August 18th. Will keep up with my work outs in the Gym after wards to be perfectly fit for the run. Ride safe Werner |

Any reason a 130/80 x 17" tire would not work on the Front of the Uly? Metzler just released Tourance EXP in that size. Also a 150/70 for the rear, but that would seem to narrow for the 5.5" Rear wheel Input will be appreciated. Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |
