My Uly just doesn't like the taste of oil I guess. It spits it up into the airbox no matter how much or how little is in the swingarm. My last oil change I filled with the factory spec'd 2.5 quarts, wiped out the airbox, and it still spits it in, heh. Whatever, no biggie. At least I know it's not burning it. Not directly at least. Anyways, this has me thinking... does the advanced timing profile of the race ecm (and other tuning) create higher compression, thus causing the engine to spit a bit of oil from the breathers? And are these oil vapors causing the engine to ping? I mean, my Uly "uses" about a 1/4 quart every thousand, and I'm convinced most if not all of it is being burned from being atomized and sucked into the intake. That much oil vapor would most certainly cause a high compression engine to ping. I'm thinking about rigging up some sort of a catch can in my airbox to see what happens, like so: http://www.buelletinboard.com/forums/showthread.ph p?t=6472 (Message edited by greenamp on August 02, 2008) |

It's common, though 1/4 quart per 1k miles seems high. Compression is the same with the stock and race ecm. |

I run my oil level at the bottom of the XXX's .... seems to use no or less oil for me there. I do a lot of aggressive decel at times, which as I understand it, can cause the oil to puke in the air intake. . |

It is common for these bikes to puke oil into the breather. The trick is to find what level your bike likes to keep it at. When I first got my bike I keep an eye on the level and topped it off when it was low. That just caused the extra oil to end up in my airbox. Like Johnboy I found that mine likes to keep the oil tank level at the bottom range of the XXX's. I keep it there. The level doesn't change between oil changes and I no longer have sludgy oil in my airbox. Thinking about it now, it probably is about 1/4 quart below the top of the XXX's, so that does sound about right. |
