Does anyone use an EZ-Pass/SmarTag on their bike? How do you mount it? I use a SmarTag on my commute (private toll roads should be outlawed!). When I ride the Uly in, I end up having to hold it up in the air as I go through the high-speed lane. Not the safest maneuver: I fear dropping the thing when trying to put it back in my pocket or back onto the velcro-stalk on my handlebars. Plus, cars seem to want to suddenly slow down as they go under the reader. I've tried velcroing it to my RADAR detector stalk on my handle bars (making sure the right side was pointing up) but it wouldn't read it. I tried holding it on the top of the inside of my tall windshield where I was thinking of mounting it. It didn't read it. I'm still waiting for the Dulles Toll Road nastygrams with a cool picture of the back of my bike. I've seen a Gold Wing with a transponder mounted to its windshield, so what the heck am I doing wrong? Why won't it read it? I mean, a transponder sitting 7 inches above a set of Uly handlebars is much higher than a Miata windshield, yet those cars don't have a problem. | ||

Mine is mounted on inside of tail trunk with velcro, works just fine. I did need to use double sided car moulding tape to get the velcro adhesive to stick to the inside of the trunk. Seems like the plastic was still ozing and thus the velcro adhesive would not stick by itself. Works just find, had it on several bridges and toll roads and it was read easily. I can just pop it off when need in another vehicle, but safe from prying eyes and fingers. (Message edited by pso on August 01, 2008) | ||

I put mine in my tank bag's map pocket. I had a holder i got from Aerostich, but i couldn't get it to mount properly to the bars, so i had it on the turn signal. It never worked. The tank bag method works most of the time. It failed on me last Saturday, the toll gate came down and attacked me and everything. Wish i had a video cam setup, it would be great on youtube. | ||

I se one of those E-ZPass holders . . . thing slips in and I can pull it out when I leave the bike. | ||

If I recall, ez-pass prefers the unit mounted away from metal objects. I have mine on the inside of the windscreen, pull it off when I leave the bike, never had a problem with it. | ||

Once on the NY Thruway, it never gave me a green light, even after sitting a few seconds. People started honking so i took off. When i went through the gate at my exit, same thing. Never got a letter, so who knows. Honestly i think its fair they give me a free ride once or twice, out of the billions i spend on speeding tickets  | ||

That said, has anyone been caught by an EZPass camera on a bike? I've blown through several tollbooths in the last 4-5 weeks on the Uly thinking my transponder was going to work, but didn't. So far, no letters asking for $1.50 plus $25 penalty. I called E-ZPass last year to discuss this. E-ZPass is aware that fumbling for your tag while trying to ride a motorcycle is unsafe. They told me there is no penalty if your pass is not successfully scanned. As long as your license plate is correct in their system, they simply scan the plate and bill your account. No penalty. Here in Dallas, Tx. I have a tag for our tollway, which I use to hold up in my hand. When I got my Sportster, I didn't use the tag at all. The plate shook so much they couldn't read my plate. I finally got a bill from the tollroad people though, but it must have taken them a while to get the enhanced photos back from "NASA"! They look like 'negatives' or 'night time' shots. But, they still only got me for about half the tolls. I was a good person before I started riding Harleys, but I do wear my seat belt now!! | ||

Cyclegadgets.com has a holder for the I-Pass which I made a bracket to attach to my tankbag. Then I can use on either of the Buells just by changing the tankbag from bike to bike.http://cyclegadgets.com | ||

Friggin' amazing - I never would have thought. Unfortunately, I never commute with the topcase - I use the sidecases for work travel. I'm going to try mounting it on the windshield. Thanks for the photo - very helpful! | ||

Hooper-I have mine mounted just like 08Uly. I bet you could mount your inside one of the side cases at the top. Should read right through the plastic, just need to remember which side to have the ovehead reader on. I might get ride of my top case because I do not like the way it looks (but it sure is conventient)and if so I will probably try to mount mine inside one of the side cases. |
