Granted, I haven't ridden around the world or through Africa but if you want to see what it's really like for the average rider to do something like this...no chase vehicles...no sponsors...no camera crew. And on the wooden-plank seat of a DR-350, then get your hands on a copy of Terra Circa. These guys circled the globe and crossed Siberia before there was a road across Siberia! Did I mention they did it on DR-350's?! Makes Ewan's ride look like a pleasure cruise! Tipsy (Message edited by tipsymcstagger on July 27, 2008) |

These flicks really put Adventure Biking in perspective. I recall in years past, how guys would puff up and brag, "Rode mine to Daytona," or "Rode mine to Sturgis..." Shit dude, that ain't NUTHIN'! I used to be part of the HD crowd, but when all your riding buddies do is bar hop, that $18K chrome plated machine becomes nothing more than a conversation piece. Realizing that I still actually LIKE some of the people in the HD crowd, the Uly is a pleasant in between for all segments of the MC community. But anyway, three years ago I began to plan the exact same venture as the Long Way Down guys did, only I was going to run it in reverse and include the Middle East too. I had scuttled the plan after considering the central African/Middle Eastern political climate, and the possibility of becoming, like the Striking Viking, a political hostage- only I doubt that ANYone would cough up the loot to spring me! Now, seeing it can be done (and mind you, there are others doing the same thing with much less fanfare- check out the RR's on Advrider.com), I may resurrect the plan. Anyone have any hints on how to get sponsorships? I think KTM might be looking for some redemption, but who knows... LOL.... Maybe Erik would like to see a Uly cross the continents. |

KTM, missed the boat... Bikes McGregor advocated riding BMW motorcycles, while Boorman preferred KTM, a specialist Austrian moto-cross and off-road bike manufacturer. They had also considered Honda bikes. After off-road tests on the KTM and BMW machines, McGregor acquiesced to Boorman's passion for the KTM. However, after one of their specialist terrain riders met with the LWR team and learned more about their intentions, KTM refused to provide them with their bikes, as the trip seemed too dangerous, or perhaps unlikely to generate the right publicity for KTM. Boorman took the news particularly badly as he had long been desperate to ride a KTM on such a journey. BMW then contributed three BMW R1150GS Adventure all-terrain motorcycles. The bikes featured a range of modifications to help the team achieve and document their mission. The bikes were also equipped with cameras, microphones and integrated mobile phone systems with display / viewfinder screens mounted on the dashboards. A customized GPS system with specially mapped waypoints in Mongolia and Siberia was crucial in areas with no roads or signposting.

If you enjoyed these you might like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SldSSPxWMfk This was filmed by a friend of one of our Concours Owners Group members. No backup, no crew, just him and his Royal Enfield. I haven't seen it yet, but was told it was really well done. I think it's still available on DVD. |

Long Way Down (and Round) have two versions, one short and one long. BBC this fall had a terrible quickly edited version (6 episodes) ... it was not fun to watch. Then in June released (in Europe) 10 episode DVDs which is fantastic ... the same as fox reality will air minus the extra stuff. Chas |

KTM originally said they would fail, and wanted nothing to do with the possibility of it,that's where BMW came in,the DVD sets we get here are full length, and take a while to watch, they are good, and as for Charlie Boormans latest stint, from what I can gather it is not all bikes,he traveled Australia in a ute,Roadtrain, and other forms as well as the bike,so it's totally different cause he did not want to fly. |

NASCAR? If I wanted to see things go real fast in a circle I"d try flushing a ping-pong ball down the toilet or tying a sock to my dog's tail...... |

Maybe Erik would like to see a Uly cross the continents. ...already been done. A pair of guys bought Uly's in D.C. and rode them clear down into South America. There was a sidebar (two pages) about it in Court and Dave's book. I can't even imagine some of the conditions those guys must have ridden through. The article described them, at one point, having to enlist the aid of a bunch of local young men to haul the bikes out of a boat and up a 60' hill to get them back onto traversable terrain! |

If I wanted to see things go real fast in a circle I"d try flushing a ping-pong ball down the toilet... And when you get bored of that, you can fly down to see Aussiebox, flush another ping-pong ball and watch it go in circles in the opposite direction! Tipsy, my GF lives in Albany, and there are some things you can't do with pizza... I thought that's what warm apple pie is for??? Tipsy |

The wife already said she's down to see it on thursday! Loved the Long Way Round. It was a little anticlimactic towards the end but it was great to see stuff like that being televised. Besides that it's also nice to see how some namby-pamby actors react to adversity without calling their therapist. |

On the Long Way Round, they basically rode past my house. There is a Sunoco gas station they where at near the end. It is about 2 miles from my house. |

Greenamp ...""Wow why would KTM refuse them? Bonehead move if you ask me."" Having one of the most widely known actors throughout the world riding your bike in front of millions ... a lot of free press, right? A good thing even 'IF' they don't complete their task, right, it's a home run, big time, from a marketing stand point...right? After all, even if they fail, they were on the best adventure bikes in the world...right? There is only one logical reason for NOT giving them KTM's. They were worried their 'bikes' would fail in front of millions of people ... unlike Dakar, no huge support team on hand... no trucks loaded with thousands of spare parts following them around. They were worried that if their bikes kept breaking down, in the middle of nowhere, without any dealer support for billions of miles, KTM would look bad. IMHO, that can be the one-and-only logical reason, whatsoever. . |
