It was the original Dunlop cupped special. It was terrible and bouncy and vibrated the pisser out of me for the past year and I just grew used to it. The new Scorpion Sync is sooooo smoooooth. A friend has a No-Mar and an expensive balancing stand. After the Dunlop was peeled off we put the rim on the balancing stand after removing the 1/4 oz weight the factory had put on it originally. Turned out the heavy spot was where the raised lettering that spells BUELL on the rim and not where the stem is located as most would expect. Then we mounted the new Pirelli with the light spot aligned with the heavy rim (BUELL) spot. Seated the bead with air pressure and then put it back on the balancing stand. As luck would have it, no balancing weight was necessary. Can't beat that with a stick. |

Did you happen to notice the blue dot on the inside of the rim? The service manual section 2.8: NOTE The yellow circle on the sidewall is a balance mark and should be aligned 180 degrees from the balance mark (blue dot) on inside of rim. I have had a few squabbles with tyre fitters (including the tech at my dealer) who insisted the valve stem was the correct place. The first time I stood my ground and offered to pay for a second tyre fitting if the balance ended up being really bad the fitter who argued the point was very surprised to see the dynamic balancer indicated '0' weight was required. It would be interesting to see where your blue dot is in relation to the spot you measured. It hasn't always been the case but the required weights I have needed have usually been very small / zero since I discovered this additional piece of factory detail. That's a great tip Rays. I wasn't going to check the manual before replacing my old 616 (rear) shown here with over 11K miles. I got a new 616 waiting in the shed. Bob

Bobmcc, Is like 90% of that 11,000 miles on a golf course lawn? I squared that front D616 to the point of un-usable at 15,000 miles, but the rear didn't make it much over 6,000. How did you make it wear so evenly? |

Etennuly, Most of my riding is on superslab I-95 north of Boston but there are a few twisties on either end of my commute which account for the scuffing outboard of the crown. Rt 1 north getting out of Boston is very curvy and gets, um, interesting, when taken at video game speeds in order to keep up with Porsche-loads of fleeing doctors and lawyers. I don't have the mountains nearby like you lucky TN's so I get my ya-yas out where I can. Also I must admit I'm a lightweight in this forum at 175 and I rarely carry more than 10 pounds of baggage. Maybe the 616's were optimized for solo sport-commuting riding? |

my original Dunlop D616 is now ready for change and I have already purchased a new one along with my second D616 rear tire, which I also have a new one but try getting your bike into a Harley shop for the 20,000 miles service just prior to Sturgis! hopefully the second week of August, all of the Sturgis bikes will be out of service and I can have my Uly serviced. It now has 20,500 miles on it and I'm not going to stop riding it with this great weather we're having here. |

I didn't mention that it was my front tire I finally changed. Anytime I'd push the ULY into the garage it would be like I was on a washboard road and now that is sooo gone. I've had that Pirelli Scorpian Sync tire sitting around for a couple of months and actually suffered riding out to Homecoming on that awful D616 front. As for the rear tire, I have no problems with the D616 rear (I'm on 2nd rear tire )other then that it could last longer in my estimation. |
