Hey Gang!

I have located a sweet deal on a brand new hold over '07 Ulysses within 300 miles of my home. It would be a fly in and drive home proposition. The trip back home would be mostly easy going two lane. Before I go for this deal my question is: What does the '07 Uly owner's manual recommend as break in (speeds) for the first 500 miles?

Thanks,

Pirnie

Pirnie- Congrats on the purchase. 07 break-in recommendations were:

"Limit engine speeds to no more than 4000 RPM during the first 50 miles and no more than 5000 RPM from 50 miles to 500 miles. After 500 miles, ride as you wish."

No idea if they've changed for the 08's or 09's. Prior to 07 they had ridiculously low recommended RPM limits. I think most here would agree it's better to ere on the side of running it too hard rather than too easy during break-in.

Do yourself a favor and break it in this way, the motoman way. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I broke my ULY in following the Motoman way and will use that method on every subsequent bike I buy in the future so long as we use internal combustion engines.

The '08s list the same break-in procedure, Hugh.

...the procedure on my '03 XB9R was absolute torture. No higher than 2500RPM for the first 50mi and 3000RPM for the next 450. Ugh.

It's WAY to late for the Motoman break-in. Too many miles/hours already on the engine to be effective. Per Motoman:

"There's a very small window of opportunity to get the rings to seal really well ... the first 20 miles !!"

Gotj,
If that is the case, then how is babying it per the manual going to do it? Chances are, the service tech that uncrated and set the bike up went out and pounded the bike through the gears a few times anyway.

My Buell is the first bike that I've done the Motoman break-in on and it is by far the best running bike I've ever owned, by a long shot. My Harley was broke-in per the Harley manual and used oil for the first 10,000 miles. The dealer said that was normal and apparently it was because eventually it quit using oil and runs clean with over 43,000 on it. Whereas the Buell has run clean from the gitgo.

EG,

Did you read Motoman's assertion? Those aren't my words. Do you just pick and choose what parts of Motoman to accept? "Chances are..." is not a real sound foundation for judging the break-in state of a bike don't you think? It has 300 miles on it and the first 20 are "critical" so it's just too late unless you think you should use the Motoman approach every time you buy a used bike no matter the miles. By Motoman, the rings will never seat and you'll be blowing smoke forever. Mine doesn't use oil and I followed the book.

How many miles did your bike have on it before you Motomaned it? Maybe all this all may prove is that ANY break-in procedure is vastly over-rated.

I followed the manual with regard to RPM limits and gave it a lot of (i.e., constant) hard accel and hard decel (what I read from Motoman) but within the manual's RPM limits, during my break-in.

So I guess my break-in was a mix between Motoman and the Owners Manual.

I have always ridden it hard, and currently, at 5,000 mi., the engine is finally starting to feel like its broken in. Burns no oil, but does go through the gas, though - I get 38 normally, on my back-road jaunts, and 48-50mpg on the freeway.

No complaints here.

YMMV.

I would use the manual 07 and onward to break-in a bike. Just vary the RPMs, change gears and take it easy. 2nd-ary roads back home with lots of breaks to cool the engine and fire it back up (heat cycling). Finally when home change the oil. That's it IMHO!: )

Doesn't have 300 miles on it, it's a brand new leftover, 300 miles from his place, so break in advice is warranted.

Personally I use this method, which is based on motoman, but I don't bother with the oil and filter changes till first service.

Bross,

OK, my bad. I guess I'm the one not reading close enough. Thanks for pointing that out before I stepped in even deeper.

Still, I'm becoming convinced that break-in techniques fall into the same category as oil mythology - there's no big difference in the ultimate outcome but there are many VERY strongly-held beliefs about them.

I was really more concerned about any special break-in requirements/procedure and if riding an ’07 300+ miles brand new would do any harm.

Haven’t bought it yet as I’m torn between an ’07 X or an ’08 XT for $1000 more. Only drawback is I have to pay sales tax and license in my own state when I get it here. (I just love WA!) And I should probably give my local salesman a chance to match or beat the offer. Though I have to admit, the thought of buying a new X/XT and getting an adventure for a ride home is very appealing.

No worries. I honestly believe a motor needs to be loaded several times to seat rings properly. Is that possible following "by the book" procedures? Possibly but I also know we're not going to hurt the motor running it up to 3/4 of your rpm range. Coming from BMW boxers, which are notorious oil burners for big miles, and breaking my RT in "aggressively" and seeing the zero oil consumption over 33,000kms, I'm a believer and this type of breakin seems to be the a big determining factor whether a boxer will burn oil or not.

The key to *any* break in, is to just vary your rpm. Which is possible even on a long freeway drone, by speeding up, slowing down, or even just banging down a couple gears for a few miles.
