My 08 Uly with 4000+ miles will no longer allow me to shift into neutral after coming to a stop when the engine is warmed up. There's no problem gearing into neutral while still rolling. But if I come to a complete stop, she will not go into neutral...not up from first; not down from second. Can you guys diagnose the cause of this development, and tell me how to correct the problem? Thanks. |

Without being able to see things, touch them, look inside, let me at least suggest your primary chain tensioner is likely out of adjustment. It is keeping a drag on the system from too loose a chain. Did you do a 1,000 mile break-in service or have the dealership do it? 1K and 5K is more than changing fluids, it includes clutch cable and clutch adjustment and primary chain tensioner adjustment. |

Jammin...yes, had the 1K service performed by the dealership, and she'll be back soon for the 5K. This is a recent development, having manifested itself within the last month. |

The clutch needs adjustment. Your dealer should do a simple cable adjustment for the price of a six-pack of their favorite adult beverage or soda, or No Charge... The cable is not hard to adjust; you can do it yourself if you have a couple of adjustable wrenches. (Message edited by teeps on July 27, 2008) |

My 08' Uly does the same. It seems to have always been stubborn to find neutral when stopped, although not impossible. |

Classic, adjust the clutch. |

Adjust the clutch and check the primary chain tensioner while you are in there. |

My 08 Uly has trouble shifting into neutral also, the stealerships have adjusted both the clutch and the primary and it still shifts worse than my '93 Harley... |

Change your tranny fluid. It is likely low. I had this problem on my '07. Changing the fluid fixed it! |

you could try bliping the throttle to down shift, I find that helps. |

Try pulling the clutch lever all the way to the bar. My clutch needs adjusting after this weekends ride and I now have a bit of difficulty finding neutral if I use just 2 fingers on the lever. Until I get it adjusted I've been using all four fingers and haven't had any further issues. NUTS |

Even with the clutch and primary drive perfectly adjusted, there is one technique to find neutral I've found that usually works. With the clutch lever all the way in, slightly raise the idle speed to around 1500 - 2000 rpms while gently nudging the gear lever. The increased shaking of the engine jostles the gear cogs into overcoming the stiction of the gear changing mechanism. |

...it needs the vibrations to get into gear? There's a naughty joke in this somewhere. |

Other than being out of adjustment... Too much oil in the primary? (sticky clutch pack) Primary chain too tight? Last time I got mine back from service it was knocking into first really loud and neutral was tough to find (when hot) until I took about 200ml of oil out of the primary and loosed the chain a bit. --- 08Uly Uly Data Page

On top of all the above information, remember that Buells have a reputation difficulties finding neutral. The Ulysses is far better than the tuber that I rode before, but is still not easy. My suggestion is to either put it in neutral while still moving slightly. If you don't get it there while moving, and just HAVE to be in neutral, kill the engine, put it in neutral and refire the engine. |
