Hey Court - Nice labor of love on the Buell story. Got mine (finally) Last week. Long waiting list of non Buell owners wanting to borrow it. New Subject: No - the Uly is not a dual sport like my 650KLR & I wouldnt thrash it down in Baja like I do the 'mule' anyway. It IS however a very capable adventure bike (which I'd much rather ride than the thumper) with potential beyond my current skill level...hope to catch up someday. My riding partner has a R1200GS - I can go anywhere he does, though admittedly we don't take 'em to the same places we do the KLR's. The Haul road to Deadhorse or similar track ? Absolutely ! The primary problem up there is the CaCl they use to keep the dust down - if it rains soon after application, it's like riding on greased snot. It dont matter what your sitting on...your're likely going kiss the mud at some point. Can't stress enough the importance of good foot pegs - hard to control the beast if ya can't stand up on it. So those of you doing the 2010 trip - hopefully American Sport Bike will have the dropped version of the billet pegs by then. 'chow' j |

Wow. I thought I knew what my Uly was.
After reading the storm of controversy over "dual sport", I am afraid to ask if we can agree that the Uly is still a motorcycle?
I will step in it by saying that you cannot judge a dual sport unless you have ridden a true dirt bike (in addition to a pure street bike, of course) in hard-core trail conditions. Even that can provide a different answer, since trail can mean wide open 100mph desert to one guy, and 10-15mph gnarly single track with log crossings to another.
Some folks just like the challenge of taking inappropriate equipment somewhere, to make an adventure out of it.

It's pretty easy to pick up and I'm not a big guy, like 155lbs 5-10ish.
They put big handles on it and technique goes a long way as does adrenaline I guess.
It crashes real well, got caught out by something that a true dualsport might have shaken off and hit pretty hard. Picked it up, after stepping on the screen that had popped off, recovered myself and continued on.
Replaced the pucks after that one, the other side was barely stuck on from the factory, still have it and most of the backing is like new.
Had to buy a bar end because I couldn't find the one that popped off. Bent my shifter a little (more) still haven't bothered with it.
The first two times I tipped were
1) skirting a slippery puddle and the edge gave- should have gone through or farther around.
2) slowly navigating through a narrow, rocky, trail to the exit, slowed too much and there was a low spot where my foot wanted to set down- caught me off guard.
Slow semi-controlled tip over.
I should have gone a little quicker with confidence, it wouldn't happen today.
Those two required a bath and a little scotchbrite to the pucks and hand guards.
Bent the shifter mildly and ripped the rubber booty- replaced booty $2.00.
The first two tips, I had barely even gotten to know the bike.
I hadn't been off road in years and was bad out of shape out in the heat.
The good get off, I got overconfident and went too fast on a trail I shouldn't have been on and caught a whoop that still gets my attention on my mx bike.
I could still do the trail slowly but I was probably doing near 30 before I bit it.
My friend behind me on his mx bike said he was thinking that I was going too fast right before that hump put the insta-brakes on me. Not sure that a 21" tire would have changed anything there just ran out of ground clearance and sense. |

This debate is funny and has been played a thousand times on Adventure Rider.
It always goes the same: Bike X is not a "real" dual sport.
Next comes 10 pages of discussion of what is and what is NOT a dual sport motorcycle. Of course there is not an official board of dual sport certification so opinions vary wildly.
After extensive debate from dual sport experts there is a series of pics of bikes that are NOT dual sports buried in mud up to the tank. Usually Gold Wings, or Harley dressers,etc.
So whatever: just ride it however you want and call it what ever you like. |

Yep- they were all dual sports back before we had paved roads, and model T's were SUV's.
Love seeing old film of a bike plowing past a Mod T in the muddy, rutted horse roads we used to have.
It just was less sport and more necessity. |

I love the Buell Ulysses. -for the record
Please allow me to preface this post with a general - "In my opinion" (that was for my buddy Portero72)
In these videos - Dualsports.
Imagine any of the three bikes in this first, highly entertaining video, being a Ulysses, and how different the outcome and the following recovery might have been.

This is not a dualsport ride I was on, and it is not my video. It came from ADV rider. It is way more entertaining than any of the video clips I have from dualsport rides. I'll add a couple of mine to the bottom of this post.
I get the feeling many on this board are not aware of how real-dualsport-rides go down.
I am starting to understand what is at the root of this friendly disagreement.
One may do a dualsport ride on one's Ulysses, which is an excellent pursuit, but this does not make one's Ulysses a dualsport ride.
PS I am a huge fan of the heavy adventure bikes riding gnarly terrain, and think we should start a thread with video clips so we can start one-upping eachother in a good natured manner. I am working on getting some better footage ASAP.
Here are a couple of dualsport video clips I made. I regret that I didn't think ahead far enough to video the truly tough sections. It is tough to remember to try and video the tough sections, because you are concentrating so hard on making it through. In the future, I will make an effort to correct this tendency from which I suffer.
There was a WeeStrom on the following ride, who made it through the first day, although it was a real ordeal for him, and it took a lot of people, on real dualsport bikes, to help him through the tough sections. He was a cool cat from Spain, and I thought it outstanding that he was tough enough to go through it all.
This is not a very tough section, but was a good place to rest and video some of the guys in the slow group. The WeeStrom was about 15 minutes behind these guys at this point.

These are a few more real dualsport motorcycles, regretably NOT on very challenging terrain. I am just wanting to show the TYPE of bikes that (until very recently) every single experienced motorcyclist I have known since the seventies referred to, and taught me to refer to, as a dualsport motorcycle-- slightly less radical than a dirt/motocross/bike, a little heavier, a little more dependable, licensed for the street, with lights, and preferably some trail armor and racks for a tent.
If I am wrong, I'm wrong - too late to change. haha

Yeah, in that first one, they rode into the water, crashed, nearly crashed into each other, and had to be dragged out. I could do that on my Hog. Looks like fun, but that's not dual-sporting. That's riding into water, crashing, stalling, and getting dragged out. Looks like fun (but I wouldn't take my Uly through there...heck, I'd have a problem taking ANYTHING that cost me more than $100 through there)!
The 2nd two videos were fun...the Uly with a careful and experienced rider could definitely handle it, so I get your point completely...I want to look for some opportunities to do some video.
I've never ridden a dirt bike - the Uly is the closest I've come. I've been thinking about taking a trip to NC or the southwest to take an offroad course. I've heard it's the best way to build key motorcycle control skills.
