If you switch to steel pegs and Pro-taper bars before you leave then you wouldn't have to bring spares. If you crash hard enough to bend these, you're probably not riding the rest of the route anyway. |

Thanks for the input on the pegs and bars. I will look into that, although I just ran the frickin wiring for my polly heaters through my bars and I dont know if I want to repeat that task anytime soon! (Message edited by chrisrogers3 on July 10, 2008) |

Couple of questions.... What is the current count/role call of Badweb Uly riders going in 2010? What is the total number that can go, as I saw something on the ALCAN site posted about total number of participants? If the Uly count is high enough, will we need to break the Badweb group into multiple teams. When is the latest you can send your $2k for registration for the 2010 run. I am seriously considering this run myself, but the only real skills I bring to the table are my wrenching and photography. Does this team need a photog/journalist to document this ALCAN 5000 Badweb run? |

ALCAN organizers are limiting total entrants to 50 +/- At this point there is not "solid count" of who is going other than to say at least three (3) and possibly more. ALCAN rules do not make a provision for a non-competitior, however, there may be a way to "buy" at seat in one of the cars? Latest time for entry is July 2010. |

Buelldualsport, I would want to ride as a competitor as I consider myself a good rider and competitor, but I could also serve as the team photog and journalist. I have multiple ram mounts on the uly with the quick release setup for Video and Digital pics. I have a GPS like the rest of you already mounted up. I guess the real question is... what would be the ideal team count and what skills would be essential for this type of run to be successful? Oh yeah and my day job... (Program Manager/Project Manager) for Boeing. |

Slow: The ability to stay in the saddle for 700 miles of moderate to fast dirt road transit stages will be the toughest part of the ride. Add your name to the list. The addition of a doumentariarian (SP) historian will be great. The more the picture the better No real ideal number. Bike "teams" have the responsibility to keep track of their members, but no real total number has been established. Skill will be a combination of what each member brings to the ride. We got a Army Scout, Strong like OX person, McGiver type geek, and who knows who else, as the team gathers numbers. Well, it looks like getting bikes to the Kirkland area has just been taken care of with you contacts in the Airline industry Welcome onboard. Add your email address to the email thread, so that we can get a mailing list contact list started. Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

I was thinking about it. Maybe trying to get Appleton HD and Buell interested in Buell again. I am headed up there tonight or tomorrow night to talk to them. I kind of want to hold off talking to them until I hear an official confirmation from Alcan. I faxed my registration in today but havn't heard anything. |

Are they only allowing competition groups? If so, it sounds like the more we get as a group, the less likely we are to have everyone approved. Would we need to make alternative plans assuming we can't make the limited number of entries? I just don't want a situation where there are 10 people who want to go and three get approved. |

Chris: One thought is to have each rider seek local sponsorship (Appleton for you) under the Team Uly banner. Do not think the factory will "officially" get involved, however, I bet we can get some technical support and ideas from the Chassis Engineering Group, if we play our cards right? Let us know if there is any interest from Appleton. Good Luck Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

FT Will review the documentation tonight, but I seem to recall that they have several "groups" for entries. Do not see that as an issue at all. Will post results later tonight Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

This may be a stupid question, but has a Buell ever done anything like this, or are we representing the future of the Ulysses as an "Adventure" bike? If thats the case (not that I'm doubting my Uly's ability) the factory may be pretty interested in this since it wouldnt be too cool to have multiple entries and minimal finishes... I know there was that one guy last year I think that traveled North America and South America but I dont know the extent of the details. |

Godaddy can host it for us pretty cheap. If Jeremy doesn't want to geek it, I can. I thought there was another geek on board with this crew. btw, in the spirit of the earlier post.... Skills I bring to the table: US Marine (Avionics, CQB, PMI, SAR) Gear head from age 12 Wrench on my own Uly IT Geek (certified) Planning (Project Manager) "Jerry Riggin" (Texas born, Okie raised) Broadcast Sound / Video Engineer (certified) Published Photographer My mind has been spinning with Video and Photo journal logistics. I am trying to see about getting multiple vid cams for on board multi bike filming. I have also been thinking about using the "long way around" format and having daily video journals and if the network allows, posting on the website as we go. I am a pseudo Photochop guy, so if you have some ideas for art work I can put something together. I will go through my patch library and see what I have that might work. Lastly, What would be the availability for some pre run meetings and planning sessions. Online or in person? |

This all sounds real interesting to me. I planned to do the ALCAN Highway anyway. How quick do I have to register? Shipped my Road King to the US in 2003 for the 100th. Should not be a problem to ship my Uly to Seattle. Have a cousin living there. Just a question of pricing for shipment. But it is almost 2 years down the road. This gives me some time to save some cash. Blowing a lot of money this year again, going to Biketoberfest in Daytona. If I take a break, hopping across the big ocean, I think I can handle the expenses. Will watch this closely. Ride safe Werner |

I am not an IT guy. I only horribly mangle websites. I don't maintain them. If you want, we could set up a section here on BadWeb to save ourselves the separate hosting and maintenance. We can have it hidden to anyone not registered as a member of the group. You could set the URL to point to that section of BadWeb if you want. Let me know, and I can set that up. |

ALCAN 5000 Competition Groups There are four (4) competition groups for bikes Under 700 cc with unlimited navigation stuff, over 700 cc with unlimited navigation stuff, then under 700 and over 700 with only a GPS and OEM Speedometer and a rallye slide wheel. There is also a Touring Class for those to want to make the trip, but do not want to be under the pressure of competing. Buells to Alaska ALCAN 5000 2010 |

Werner: Entry close June 1 2010. Would love to have you along for the ride. Jermey & Slow You guys decide on where to Host the Webpage. I would think that we would want a members only section, but also access to the public. Slow Will email spreadsheet in the morning. Ftb, I forgot what you did for a living, but after reading the requirements for the ALCAN documentation it all came flooding back to me, not to mention all the times you killed me on COD4. BDS, I think I like the blended approach. I can build a good little 1-3 page site for public consumption, but lets use the Badweb for the members only section. I can setup a dynamic link to badweb from the member login tab on the BuellstoAlaska.com home page. Ftb, it will take me a couple of weeks to get the site set up between work and home life, not to mention my main laptop took a bluescreen of death loop after the Vista SP1 install on my amd64 based pc. Thank you Microsoft and Intel. So, the thought was.... go ahead and setup the Badweb private space and lets start conducting our business there. How does that sound? Btw, BDS if you need me too... I can pick up the hosting fees on the website. I would just need your written permission to use the .com name and then your access info for Godaddy. you can ping me at my yahoo account I sent you until FTB sets up the private space here. |

The factory tends to be enthusiastic about these types of things but does not get involved. Historically there is tons more bad than good that can come out of them. The other problem is that there are so many (I've been involved in 4 Ulysses "Epic Journey's" in the last year, that it becomes tough meter out funding and resources. There are, and I've already been contacted on this one, some good less formal routes to move info to and fro, This will be exciting. |
