I know, I know ... but I don't belong to the Bad Weather Weed Eaters Forum. and I know there are a lot of engine savvy cats here.

I went to start the Weed Eater tonight and it won't start.

Removed, cleaned and gapped the SP, okay. Drained and put in fresh fuel and ck'd for spark, okay. Cleaned the filter.

If I pour fuel directly into the cylinder head (by removing the SP) it will fire for a few seconds and run.

Lines from the fuel tank to the carb are clear and functional.

So it's not getting fuel at the carb to the engine.

Now what?

BTW, this is more serious than it might appear at first blush - if I don't finish the list of chores my wife gave me (yes, I'm p*ssy whipped) I won't be able to blast off on the Uly Saturday morning, for a Johnboy weekend...(Lake Chautauqua, Ny)

Where are you located around Chautauqua?

Lived in Westfield and Jamestown for five years.

Loved the snow

You either got a blockage somewhere or a non-functioning fuel pump.

They normally pump fuel with a diaphram in the carb. These harden up with age & can develop pin holes.A carb kit will usually cure this. The are cheap & easy to install.

Hey Buelldualsport,

My trip is to Webb's at Lake Chautauqua, Ny, about 4 or 5 hours from me in NE Ohio. I plan to hit Alleghany Nat. Forest (PA) as well on the way up. I love the area - have never stayed in Lake Chautauqua, Ny though. Any input on places to see, etc., would be most appreciated.

FB... do these things have a fuel pump?

Dfishman... where can I get a carb kit for something like this - the carb is really small.

If you have the time, eat in Westfield at the Barcelona Harbor House.

Tell Stu and Martha the Tom sent you.

They have a great restaurant on Lake Erie, the food is great.

There is a small bar in Mayville, that has fantastic steaks.

Also,Webb's always had great seafood

The Bar right at the Ferry, on Chatuqua Lake has Chicken Wings that will take the top of your head off.

Enjoy the trip.

I dunno. I think mine has a gear driven pump. Some have the diaphragm thingy.

What brand is yours? An honest to golly Weed Eater?

Buelldualsport, thanks for the tips, BTW, do you recall the name of the bar for steaks?

Johnboy - borrow a neighbors' or relatives or rent one. Something so trivial shouldn't stop a ride (not that pleasing the wife is trivial - but the weed whacker is.)
btw... I come from the Western NY area (there's nothing like the snow belt by Buffalo) and it's nice to read names of locations that are familiar.

""What brand is yours? An honest to golly Weed Eater?""

Yeah, Weed Eater 25 (25cc)

I took the carb apart aleady and cleaned it the best I could with electrical contact cleaner. I could buy some carb cleaner and soak it I guess.

The damn thing is so small; I think the fuel (gas and oil mix) might be more apt to form that gummy sh*t then non-oil mixed fuel.

I have had only one Weed Eater product.

They are shite as far as I am concerned. Kinda like Black and Decker.

Once they start to come apart, you might as well junk them.

Take the muffler off. It will have a mesh type spark arrestor in it. These become plugged over time. You can just remove it.

Another possibility is that the fuel line is cracked or broken inside of the fuel tank or between the tank and carb. These lines tend to get hard over time and crack then you've got no suction/no fuel to the carb. You can buy this super small fuel line on E-bay or your local small engine shop. I got something like ten feet of it for a couple bucks on E-bay.

screw the carb kit. I used goop on my KLR's diaphram... worked fine.

Is it plugged in?

screw the carb kit. I used goop on my KLR's diaphram... worked fine.

On a jaunt to a BMW rally back in '91 my S started fouling plugs to the point of non-fire within 100 miles. Gas mileage dropped into the 'teens which really sucked in the middle of nowhere in UT. Good thing my brother's R80ST/GS had a 12 gallon tank.

Got to Cortez CO and camped, determined to fix it or rent a truck and go home.

Scratched my head for awhile then pulled the carb tops. Both diaphragms had cracks and daylight showing through them.

My bro whipped out his tube of Duro and I smothered the diaphragms.

Not only got me to Paonia but also home!

""Youngstown or Ashtabula area?""

South of Youngstown

BTW, worked on it until late last night - ended up trashing it.

Think I'll try an electric cordless from Lowe's.

Thanks
John

I lived in Jamestown for a few years. I grew up in Pa in the Allegheny NF. I was back to Jamestown last year and all of the places that I used to frequent are no longer there, well it has been over twenty years.

Chautauqua is a nice ride around the lake, and lunch or dinner, but for out door niceties Kinzua Dam area has a lot more to offer. NF, Parks, camping, picnic areas, a beach, boating, great motorcycle roads, back roads and even dirt roads that get you to some awesome places, beautiful views, lots of over looks. Oh and there aren't many straight roads.

I do recall some small town restaurants and bars near by though. PM me if you like.

Feeding the Carp at the spillway of Kinzua was always a treat.

Hope that is still the case

Have a good trip

The Bar in the Middle of Mayville is the Mayville Diner.

It is on the right side as you are coming from Westfied. It/was is right in the middle of town. There was an attorney's office in the next building.

Have a great trip

The Italian Fisherman in Bemus Point (where the Ferry used to cross the lake/may be a bridge there now) also had great sea food.

Enjoy

John-I worked and worked on mine and finally trashed it and bought a 4-stroke Cub Cadet 'cutter. Purrs like a kitten and cuts great. Plug won't foul up when you let it idle, no premix, stays clean 'cause there isn't any oil sticking to it....much better. Only downside is that it's a little more expensive and a little heavier. But it also vibrates less and doesn't make my hands go numb. Have fun on your ride too. I'm from NY but live in Arkansas, for now.

There used to be a ferry that crossed the lake where the big bridge is. There was a club there......uh.....Surf Club if memory serves. Used to go there a lot, great live music, but never been there sober. So many bars along the way back in the day.

My In-laws own a restaurant in Youngsville and a couple of my good friends own bars and eateries there also. Can get you on to some great tasting pepperoni balls, to die for, and likely would with to many of the greasy bastards!

Johnboy,
Throw away the weed wacker. Also throw away the lawn mower, the shovel, the hoe, the rake, and the leaf blower. Move into a condo. I checked your personal info. You are old enough that the kids should be out of the house. Move to the condo. No more yard work. Go ride the bike.
