There is a new Pirelli Scorpion Trail tire on the market now.Suposed to be better on dirt. Too bad not in our size. Lets hope the Moto Guzzi Stelvio will become a big seller (same rear size) and we might see something coming up. Ride safe Werner

Some comments from Andrew at Adventure's Warehouse who rode the 2006 version of the ALCAN 5000

That being said, any stock motorcycle can ride and compete in the Alcan 5000 Rally. It’s not a race but a Time/Speed/Distance rally. The fastest guy does not finish first. It’s all about running the TSD stages on time and on your minute. You can a lot more information about the TSD portions from the site.

My goal was to beat up my bike and run as fast as I possibly could without getting into any trouble. I achieved that goal for sure finishing last in the standings with 1800 points. The rally scoring is like a golf score, the lower the better.

Your Uly will do just fine. If you can find a decent dual sport tire to fit the rims you’ll be better off and although you will spend quite a bit of time on pavement, the dirt road sections can be slippery and muddy. A street oriented tire will be fine for the pavement but you will be a little more cautious on the dirt roads. Plan to bring a spare set of tire with you, a fresh set for the start and another set for changing later. The support truck will carry the tires for you so no need to worry about carrying them on the bike. From what I’ve read about the Buell, Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires work well in various conditions. Stay with what works and make sure that they are fresh and kept properly inflated.

Accessories and gear needed:

GPS: an model will do as long as you know how to use it properly

All weather gear (temps vary greatly and rain comes and goes often, you’ll need to be prepared for all variations..trust me). Good and comfortable boots, jacket, pants, etc. Layers are very important!!! Don’t forget one of those ski type masks for under your helmet!! A couple of pairs of really good gloves!

Heated grips on the bike, heated jacket/pants

A very comfortable helmet with a spare face shield. Clean the shield often!!

For the bike: spare shift lever, brake pedal/lever, clutch and brake levers on the handlebar, oil filter, plugs, Loctite, jb weld, tools, brake pads(if not fresh before the rally),etc. This is a very long rally and it will take you through beautiful country and varying road conditions. You don’t want to overpack as it will only weigh you down. Search before hand and carry a list of Buell service centers on the route and call them with your itinerary just in case. It makes them feel good to help and gives you great piece of mind.

Additional Comments from Andrew

I really think your tire selection with the Pirelli Scorpion Sync will be perfectly fine as long as they stay fresh. My guess is the only problem you may have is if it gets muddy. At that point you just ride a little slower. There were guys riding GS’s with Tourances mounted, V-Stroms with Michelin Pilot Roads, and KTM 950’s with Scorpions.

I rode with Conti TKC’s the whole time. The rear was shot in about 2300 miles. I mean really gone but then again I was on the throttle the whole time very hard.

Andrew and his son are going to compete on a GS side car rig in 2010.

Back home from hospital and waiting for rehab starting next Monday. I can walk for a while but my left foot is still numb. Might take a while. Locking forward to make it to Oktoberfest. Hope to meet some of you folks over there.
Ride safe Werner
