Hi everyone, I installed some irridium plugs that I ordered from American sportbike. Without thinking I adjusted the gap to stock gap size of .035in or .09mm. They came with a smaller gap. Today on my first ride to work and back the bike ran really rough with lots of vibration in the pegs and handle bars. It also did not seem as responsive. Either I messed up something trying to finagle in the new plugs or I shouldn't have adjusted the gap in the new plugs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am going on vacation tomorrow so won't be able to look at bike until next week. Thanks in advance |

When I put mine in I had to turn the idle down a bit. It was causing the same symptoms. |

They come pre-gapped and shouldn't be touched. Apart from anything else the contacts are fragile and don't like being bent. If you are still in trouble post a reply and I will run down to the lockup and pull one out and check the gap for you. Peter |

Hey thanks for the tips guys. It appears the high idle was at fault. Brought it down a notch and bike seems to ride fine. I looked at the nkg website and they specified a gap of 0.040, so who knows. Maybe the gap isnt that critical. It now appears my exhaust valve quick working also. Looks like thats pretty common from others posting here. I also just had to jury rig my front muffler clamp with some large pipe clamps because I noticed it was broken. I think its time to replace all of them anyway. Thanks again for the help. Eric |

As Pete said Iridium plugs shouldn't be touched, from Denso's website: "Q. Do I need to set the gap? A. Generally, no. The DENSO Iridium Power plug comes pre-set with a protective sleeve over the firing end, to protect the gap from accidental alteration. DENSO Iridium Power’s ultra-efficient firing power compensates for normally recommended gap settings that are smaller than the pre-set value. In the cases of vehicle modifications (nitrous, turbo-chargers, super-chargers, high power ignition systems, etc.), some adjustments may be desired. Or, if you prefer to remain consistent with factory specifications, you may adjust. However, please be careful not to place any stress on the fine center electrode during adjustment. You could accidentally break off the very hard, and therefore brittle, tip."} |

Wouldn't the gap have an effect on the timing? Or is it irrelevant in the grand scope of things? |
