I wounder if the internal area of the thermometer is filled with oil, helps absorb the shock esp. on the swing arm and 80+$. I have had none filled ones that will vibrate to self-destruction with-in 1-1.5 years.

I adapted a sealed oil filled dip-temp-meter from a xt600 that has worked out fine for 2+ years. Also if not sealed the internals will get water inside and fog up when hot ... not much use then.

Two Q's is it sealed and oiled filled?

Chas

PS: The outside looks great!

Gee, I wonder who created a market for something like that.

I'd like to see the differences in oil temps between the 06-07 compared to the 08 with the upgraded oil cooler and pump.

I really think the oil temperature issue has been very overstated on this site and other Buell sites. I don't know of a single engine related problem to oil temp ever being talked about, yet everyone seems to think it is a concern. There has really been no problems with the XB engine ever as far as I can tell. Yes I am sure somewhere someone has destroyed one but I doubt if it was caused by excess temp in the oil.

85 Dollars is not overpriced for an oil temp gauge. A waterproof gauge and sender will cost you about 49 to 75 dollars and you have to fabricate a mount and do a lot of wiring also. This setup requires no installation other than to replace your dipstick with this one the next time you check your oil. It looks like a quality part and is so simple it's almost too good to be true.

It does appear to be an oil-filled gauge- nice!

I don't think anyone ever suggested (at least not in this forum) that the Uly's were overheating their oil, it was just mainly an item of curiosity, especially after modifications.

Chas,

The relative calm environment of the XB swingarm dipsticks is likely not problematic like the vicious high frequency vibes that an engine-mounted dipstick gauge must endure. There's a world of difference between those two scenarios.

"Gee, I wonder who created a market for something like that. "

I'd guess that the market for dipstick temperature gauges harkens back a century or so to the invention of the dipstick and motorcycles with recirculating lubrication systems.

Interestingly, that is some time after the market for media sponsorship/advertising developed. Sadly, some folks still today seem unable to grasp the concept.

"I'm not making a profit, I'm just charging for my time/effort."

I sure do appreciate folks like Keith (Skully) who are honest and honorable.

Skully..my apologies for the price remark...this piece is obviously better made than the one on my XR.

I don't think it's oil filled... Looks nice though.

I think it's this instrument.

Chas1969 - The gauge is sealed but is not liquid filled. I spoke at length with the manufacturer and they made this recommendation. They make nearly identical gauges for other manufacturers who use them on motorcycles and have had no problems what so ever.

I really think the oil temperature issue has been very overstated on this site and other Buell sites.

Thunderbox - I don't know of any oil temp problems either. What can I say? I'm a nerd engineer! I had oil temp gauges on both of my Harleys!

It looks like a quality part and is so simple it's almost too good to be true.

Thunderbox - Thanks! It took far more work than I would have ever imagined to get from concept to the finished product that you see above.

Hughlysses - Please see above

Khelton - No worries. You are certainly entitled to an opinion. It does seem a little steep and no doubt you could make one for yourself much cheaper. Now go build 50 of them for paying customers!

08uly - You are correct

I like it! Looks great, compliments the dark anodizing of the swingarm...I'm interested in what the oil temp is, though I'm not worried. I drove a very modded VW baja bug for years so I feel right at home with a hot aircooled motor. It's nice to see if modifications or alterations to driving style affect oil temperature, or if engine/oil operating temp affects power or mileage. I'll probably order one, right after front axle sliders. Thanks for the development work, Skully!

What I'd like to see is a dipstick with an integrated digital oil level display. I had one of these on my Road Glide:

I have one on my Harley..it runs around the 212 mark on hot days and in the 190s on 75 degree days..I stuck in in the ULYs oil tank as soon as I got home from a ride..the ULY runs in the 170s after a hard ride...probably due to the oil cooler and the oil in the swingarm.. I enjoy checking it on the Harley...I don't need one on the ULY..

I like the look of it, looks well made and a pleasant dial face. I doubt I would buy one though because if it was necessary surely the bike would have one built in. However, if there was a dial that told me the oil needed topping up..... or that my wife was in a bad mood.....

The bike needs a voltmeter and that wasn't built in....

Very nice looking unit.

Uly oil runs in the 170s??!?! Who'd a thunk it?
