Stock ’08 Uly with a used Drummer soon to be installed.

I’m a little confused about all of the airbox options. I guess there’s an ’06 and an "improved" ’07 airbox. Is the ’08 the same as the ’07 or is it yet again different? Better or worse than??? And all of these are referring to the cover…not the base, correct?

And then I’ve read about drilling holes in the airbox. Is this the “poor-man’s” way of emulating the ’07 airbox without actually replacing it?

Then there is the open airbox conversion kit. What exactly is the is eliminating? The base?

Finally, there is the ubiquitous (in motor sports) K&N air filter element. Worthwhile?

There are actually three parts to the air box.

First is the base, mounts to the fuel tank and surrounds the throttle opening.

Second is the air box. It clips onto the base and holds the air filter and exhaust servo actuator and cable.(the part you want to know about)

Third is the air box cover, it comes in a variety of beautiful colors and Buell badges and it is the shiny exterior.


The '06 air box was restrictive to air flow in its stock form. Us cheap bastards drilled or hacked all kinds of big holes in it, the wealth to waste fellers' bought the '07 for $35.00, all for more air honkin' throttle response.

'07's had a new one with much more air flow and it also took non of its air from the top of the rear cylinder head inside the box. They also had an up graded ECM.

I believe I read that the '07 and '08 air box were the same.

An after market or hand-job open air box is simply a lid to hold the air filter on. It is usually done after an exhaust mod and that eliminates the exhaust servo.

Thanks Etennuly. So the only benefit of the open air box is eliminating the exhaust servo?

I'd read that when I install the Drummer, I can simply disconnect the cable from the muffler end and leave everything else as-is.

I would like to leave the servo and cable in place at least until I decide whether I'm happy with the Drummer.

More air and cooler air is the actual point to the exercise.

Just unhooking the servo will let it run, but with a red light on.

With the Drummer you will probably need to do an airbox mod or at least a K&N higher flow type filter. You will also need to reprogram your ECM. And there is a trick for getting your red light off from removing the servo. I'm sure your Drummer will come with instructions for that.

Doubtful since it is used.

If I recall correctly, Drummer mufflers are designed to run with the stock ECM, even better with the Race ECM. He may not "need" to reprogam the ECM.

Which is good, since there is no re-map available for the '08s yet.

I took a 3/4" wood bit and swiss-cheesed my 06 airbox lid. Boy does it honk now! I also get a vibration against my right knee when it's touching the "tank" (external cover) - maybe I should call Buell CS and bitch about an unwanted vibration? LOL. Next step, K&N and '07 ECM flash (anyone have a link to how to do it? I have digital tech at work...), then The Great Exhaust Debate (a.k.a. schmoozing guys with other Ulys into letting me ride their bikes to hear their exhausts, LOL).
