This is not an Earth shattering tip...but I alway dislike taking the belly pan off to remove the oil filter...I discovered that if you take off the three screws on the right side by the filter you can get the filter off and back on.. turn the filter with some metric channel locks if needed... |

After about 12 oil changes, I've recently discovered that trick......it works great..... |

I use standard channel locks. My metric ones broke! |

DeBueller you are ahead of me.....I finally discovered it on my 14th oil change...I hated all the back and forth with that belly pan..I even thought about cutting a slot in it when the "light came on"...UREEKA!! I don't think they make American Channellocks anymore...they all say Made in China....yours must be "vintage". |

FWIW, the tech at my local HD/Buell dealer did that when I had them do the first oil change. So I guess the mother company condones this most unorthodox activity! |

yours must be "vintage". Yeah, and my computer is so old it has a rope pull starter. |

On this note, I changed my own oil on my ulysses yesterday for the first time, the service manual says to tighten the filter on by hand only.. I put about 300 miles on it and looked down and there is oil on my exhaust pipe.. seems weird to me to just hand tighten it, wondering if maybe its too loose and not sealing till the bike warms up or too tight and blew out the gasket? Thoughts? Anyone with this issue? is this considered a thread jack?.. sorry |

I've always put oil filters on "hand tight", but hand tight is relative. I believe you can over tighten an oil filter quite easily "by hand". Some filters say "1/2 turn from point of gasket contact" etc. It's a pliable rubber gasket, not a copper crush washer, doesn't take much torque/tension to seal. Could the oil you're seeing on your exhaust be left from the oil change? I get oil on my header pipe on my RT if I don't cover it with a small piece of tin foil. I prefer that to smelling burnt oil for the first few miles. (Message edited by bross on May 02, 2008) |

if in fact I overtightened do you think I shoud run up and get a new filter now? or just loosen it a bit? Also can i change out the filter add the .4 qts to the filter and be good or drain all the oil again? Thanks for the info!!! Mark |

Just clean up around the filter seal really good and wipe dry and keep an eye on it. I seriously doubt you over tightened it, have you ever tried to get a filter off done by a dealership? That's one reason why I like to change my own oil, cause if it was a dealer that did the previous time, you're probably going to be hacking it off with a big screw driver etc. |
