My son just purchased an '07 STT and the same thing applies. The belt is tight as a drum (couldn't deflect it more than an 1/8" if my life depended on it). I've had him order another spring loaded tensioner $$$ for his bike. Expensive, but worth it in the long run, in my opinion. I don't ever remember my Sportster's belt being that tight and using the "H-D" gauge to set the Sporty's belt tension resulted in noticeable deflection on the belt when I pushed on it. Of course the swingarm geometry is different on Buell's, but even at max tension, my Sportster belt wasn't anywhere near this tight. Although I'm sure the Buell's belt tension falls within all the engineering parameters, I've always adjusted my Harley's belt a little on the loose side figuring less load on the whole secondary drivetrain. Think I'm going to stick with that concept as I have yet to break a belt. (Message edited by prowler on April 11, 2008) |

I don't ever remember my Sportster's belt being that tight and using the "H-D" gauge to set the Sporty's belt tension resulted in noticeable deflection on the belt when I pushed on it. For every bike other than a Buell, the belt tension changes as your suspension moves. It has to be loose to allow suspension travel. |

Kudos to Buell for being so frank in discussing the belt's evolution and the problems they solved. We've never seen that kind of honesty and transperency from BMW (remember the paralever, early K driveshaft, and now differential failures?). |

Ever since the cogged belt reduction drive unit on my homebuilt airplane, I've been a little paranoid about belt tension vs. belt life. I guess that's why I prefer them a little loose. I think the Buell final drive belts are a wonder of modern science. To drive 90 HP thru that little belt (lots more on 1125R) is amazing, I think. It's a wonnerful thing when compared to chain final drive. |

didnt see them list a marked decrease in belt life for riding it off road... I know I am going through belts faster than my pavement hugger City-X cohorts |
