I just saw that Paochow's KTM had the clutch unravel killing the whole engine... only 5150 miles. http://www.paochow.com/990.htm

For what Paochow is using it for, the KTM really is the prefect tool for the job.

I guess you could say they were made for each other - a couple of perfect tools.

I just saw that Paochow's KTM had the clutch unravel killing the whole engine... only 5150 miles.

The actual failure was at about 4080 miles in the Southern Tip of Baja. I ended up changing the oil and riding it home 1100 miles or so. Full story here... http://www.paochow.com/Baja.php

I gotta say that I liked Buell's quick recall policy a lot better than KTM's $#%&ing TSB don't tell the customer policy. Now if Buell would only make a more dirt oriented adventure bike.

Wow, do you just slam everyone who has a different bike that you, or did I do something to you? I would think Real Estate brokers would be nicer than you...

BTW: I think the Uly will be soundly beating KTM in my update to my Uly vs 990 comparo....

Shuushh! Don't anyone say a word about wheel bearings. Paochow wants to come back home.

Well now, actually, I was just gonna say that the KTM was the perfect tool for your kinda riding (more dirt and adventurous stuff and all) then, as luck would have it, I recalled what a tool you were, and POW, poetic genius, if I do say so myself.

I tried not to write the last line - honest, but couldn't help myself, sorry.

Yeah - I don't think the bearings would hold up to stuff like this...

Thanks Karl.

What upset me the most is that the failure wasn't really the bike's fault or a design issue but rather some hungover factory worker who forgot to tighten my clutch bolts. Oh well, should be back up and running in a few weeks, ready to be broken in again.}

I have to repeat:
LOVE the coin.

I once fixed my old Honda civic's clutch cable with $.11
One penny and two nickels.
The temporary fix lasted 40,000 more miles til I sent it onto the junkyard.

Thanks for the condolences Treadmarks.

I've asked to keep the clutch cover, but won't be using it. The clutch bolt cut a groove all the way around the inside seriously weakening it. If you look closely at the picture you can see the ring from the aluminum being tweaked..

I am sorry for the loss ... but are you going re-write the Uly-KTM comparo article?

Good luck with the re-build of the engine!!

Sorry to hear about the loss - I had pretty much the same failure on a brand new Z900 kawasaki (8 miles on the clock), so I really do share your pain.

Nice job with the case repair - you can't keep a good man down.

Thanks guys.

Chas: I'm planning on updating the comparo, once I get about the equivalent time/miles (14mo/13.6K) on the Katoom. I'm planning on riding to Canada this summer, so I should be close.

I'm also looking at trying to get some seat time on a updated Uly - 08 or possibly 09, so I can comment on the improvements. Anyone want to volunteer their bike to be tested?

Hey Paochow - Sorry about your BadBajaBreakdown. Make and Model irrelevant to me - hate to see misfortune for any 2 wheeler on an otherwise great adventure. Just got back yesterday from a month in Baja on my KLR. Wasnt ready to beat the crap outta my 08 Uly yet...and my rudimentary dirt skills significantly "crash tested" the KLRs noteworthy durability. Did about 2500 Baja miles - only about 400 of those on dirt. Ready for Copper canyon next year. Is that a 5 0r 10 Peso coin repair ? - need to keep one of those in my spare parts bag. Ingenious ! Good luck on the rebuild - at least it's out of KTMs pocket. Enjoyed your KTM / Uly comparison - helped me make my decision based on the preponderance of my riding interests. Got the Kendon equiped Kawi for the dirtier stuff. Now just need the dirt skills to match...along with cow & goat early warning system. One Buzzard followed me all the way from Mexicali to Todo Santos - knew a likely meal prospect when he watched me take my first deep sand wipeout. Take care Pal.

Jphish- It's a 10 peso, the five left a hole exposed. I'm going to have a few coins in my tankbag, really came in handy.

Paochow,

Sorry to hear about the problems. Sucks no matter what the bike is especially when it's a failure due to someone else's laziness. Hope you're up and running soon.
