Well a dead dear got me today. I was following behind a work van on my way to the office this morning and came upon some road kill. I saw the van swerve in front of me and I then saw the large dear laying in the road. I went to swerve into the oncoming lane but the dear still got me. I caught a leg and the bike lost it in all the blood and guts. The Uly is a great bike to low side with bags on it. The only damage was the hand guard broke off the end of the bar. The brake lever folded up (but still functions) and the mirror and turn signal broke. The seat broke off at the tie down and the right side bag took a good scrape. I will definitely say something about ATGATT!! With out the gear I would be in a lot of pain right now. I will post pictures when it gets light out. My hip and elbow would be just flesh if I had not had the jacket and pants on this morning. But the bike is fixable and I only have one scrape where the asphalt ate through my HD gloves. It was a great start to my Birthday I can tell you that. Brian |

Brian, Glad you're OK, man. I've heard many stories of live deer colliding with bikes, but I didn't know the bastards would come back from the dead and get us! |

Glad you came through ok. Maybe re-position the indicators to save them breaking again? I learnt a good trick a little while ago (from AdvRider website) which is to loosen the hand levers so they have just enough 'give' in them if you drop it to move on the h/bar to save trapping/injuring your hands. Also file some 'easy-snap' grooves in your hand levers to leave enough of a stub to get home with if the bike goes over-a la trials bike: Hope it's useful for someone. (I've not tested them out yet-luckily) |

Buelltoys, Glad you are OK and the bike is fixable. I went through that last year, but mine was alive and totaled the bike. Like you I was wearing the gear and it saved my skin (60 mph). Friends behind me who saw everything don't wear much besides a helmet and it definitely opened their eyes to gear. |

Yo, BT - I did the "Bambi Dance" in February - no chance for braking or maneuvering...the stupid beasts just sprinted across the road and I just happened to be there. Here's my story: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=142838&post=1068639 Luckily, the deer I hit had slipped and was on its stomach at the point of collision, which had something to do with the fact that - after I stopped sliding - I got up off the pavement, walked over to my Uly, picked it up, and waited for the cops. Thanks to ATGATT (Olympia AST) and good luck, I was essentially uninjured and, frankly, miraculously just fine. 55mph. That's a miracle. Saint Hooper...it has a ring to it... What was your gear? What's your state of mind?

Glad to hear you're recovering. I'm on the mend as well. I've been constantly amazed at the amount of support on this board. |

I have a TourTech mesh jacket and Fieldsheer pants. Scorpion helmet and Bates boots. I've got pics but have to resize them. After hitting the deer and sliding I picked the bike up and had to find the seat. Fixed the seat and got the goodies for the bike. $109.50 to fix the bike and will cost me $400 for the gear. Didn't even scratch the helmet to my surprise. Only scratch was a 1/4" dia. scar where the asphalt ate through my glove. |

All that is important is that you are okay. The bike can be fixed. I have laid mine down twice and still going strong. (Message edited by M2nc on April 04, 2008) |

Now that you bummed up the handguard..get rid of the junky stock ones and put on some real handguards like the Acerbis Rally Pro...no more curled/broken levers... |
