Alright. Seems like quite a while back Spiderman posted some tricks to swapping out the fans without performing the detailed dissassembly as outlined in the manual. Anyone remember this, or have some tricks of their own? |

no tricks but I'm a novice wrench and the removal was pretty easy. just remember exactly how you coax the old fan out - I didn't and i spent way too long getting the new back in and lined up right |

Took it out last night. What a pain in the arse. It ain't exactly easy to lift the rear of the bike to remove the shock with the micron installed. The old fan seemed to turn ok, but was popping fuses. (CEL) I had a trick up my sleeve...but it didn't quite pan out, yet.

Ok, bike is back together, and the fan works fine again. I was planning to squeeze the new SPAL high CFM unit in it's place, but it was such a pita just to put the stock size fan back in that I decided to pass. Next time I have the engine out, I will try again. It took almost one hour of idling to get the fan to cycle on it's own thanks to the new XOPTI race map. If you have never changed your fan, you owe it to yourselves to DIY and take care of all the loose screws that you will run across while your "in there". |

hey all,i took my fan out to replace headpipe gaskets.worked great to not rotate eng.i must be luckey,the fan part only took about 5 min. out and about 10 min in.sure a slick way to change header gaskets though. pat |

I read somewhere that Buell toyed with the idea of that fan working in both directions but opted for just one way. Probably because of the complexity. |

Complexity? Don't you just reverse the polarity of fan and your good to go? Perhaps there was an issue with airflow when the fan is switched from suck to blow. |

I think the fan sucks because it was designed TO suck. My fan is "dual action". Sucks on one side, blows on the other. Amazing technology. |

The only time the fan would be of use blowing forward would be when the wheels weren't moving. Having it know and do that would be more complex than what now occurs. And whether that helps cool the rear jug more efficiently is a question Buell would probably know. It would be a good bet that it would cool the underseat electronics in that mode. |

Honda has used a setup like that on some of their bikes, Goldwings and I think RC-51's. Goldwings had significant cooling problems for a while, some of which were attributed to the fan operation, so maybe it's good Buell didn't try this. |
