If Packdog is currently out of cables, drop me a line. I always make them on an as ordered basis. To this day I still average making 2 a week. Somebody always finds an old post with my name or something and drops me a pm. Under normal circumstances, I have them in your hands in a week. According to my long running excel sheet, I will have shipped 113 cables when I mail off the two I am building currently. The last one is on it's way to Australia. That's pretty impressive for something I do for a hobby. I have to admit, building the cables kept me sane and occupied my mind while I went through my divorce and I thank you guys for that.

Joe,

Just to confirm, you are only charging your cost of material and shipping, correct?

I called the new dealer I am using for warranty work and asked them if their guy that runs the dyno there could tweek my Uly after adding the Special Ops exhaust. He said I'd need a race ecm or power commander unit as the stock ecm cannot be adjusted. I call B.S. What do you think?

Blake,

Yes sir. Priority shipping from vendors to me and me to customers. Cables from Adafruit, connectors from the same Ebay I guy I gave everyone a link to. I don't even charge for the gas I use to deliver them to the PO because that gives me a chance to ride the bike more. I did have to up my price a little because once I stopped doing batches like Packdog, I quickly found I was loosing about $5 per cable. I got into the situation where I gave the links out to all the vendors and ended up with no supplies so I found some new ones for cables and their shipping is a bit more, but he always has a cable when I need it. Basically I shipped about 20 single order cables out and realized that I paid the shipping on them to the customer. That was my fault for not calculating better. I do steal my heatshrink from work so I hope that isn't a problem!

Like I said guys, I do it as a hobby and strictly per order if Packdog is out of a batch and you need one pronto. I pretty much let him take over the cable thing, but people still find my name and request them regularly. Let me know if that is a problem.

Joel

It sure is! Joel's price is very fair. I don't see how he is buying the materials, getting the stuff shipped to him, and shipping it to us for the price he charges.

I was getting the cables in bulk from Mouser, but right now they have a 3 month wait on an order for 20 cables!

Buying them in discount quantities was the only way I found to get them out the door for a reasonable price.

I'm really glad that Joel is still active in our community and hasn't completely deserted us on his desmodronic beauty. Thanks Joel.

Isn't bying directly from FTDI an option for you also? A pack of 10 is GBP 105 incl. shipping. I sold about 140 cables now and delivery had always been fast and smooth.

Gunter

I have a few more US sources that I deal with. What I have found out is we are competing with a group of hobbyist on something called Boarduino. They use the same cable. Unfortunately for them, I have found their suppliers and use them too. I even got an email from one of them asking why do I buy so many cables? Do they have special healing powers that he wasn't aware of? I gave him a little insight, but not much. It was a funny email for sure. I haven't purchased from Mouser since November of last year. They went out of stock too fast and shipping was sporadic. Like I (and Packdog) said, you have to buy in batches to make them for the $40. Once my requests tapered to 1 or 2 a week, I had to go up to $50(Paypal). I get them into Canada for $51.30 and Australia is just a tad over that. I realized later on that "borrowing" the heatshrink from work also made the $40 doable, because I ran out on a day off and had to buy some locally. Ouch. That stuff isn't cheap around me. Gunter, I looked into buying from FTDI, but the cables are a little over $21 for our weak dollar and the shipping was pricey to the US. Take your numbers for example, that 10 pack for GBP 105 is $21.30 a cable before shipping across the sea.

Yes, the cable themselves might be a bit more expensive (ask me, I have to pay UK VAT on top of that also). But these cables are wire ended and I save time putting them together. No need to pinch off the plug, no heat shrink required. I'm mounting the Deutsch plug within two minutes. As I don't charge for my work, this is my real benefit.

Gunter

Thanks for the advice Gunter.

When I contacted FTDI about getting the cables directly from them they told me that their minimum order was 100. They didn't mention the price at that quantity, but since I am just doing it for a hobby I am not willing to commit to that quantity.

They may have different rules for their distribution in the U.S than they do in the U.K.

I use shrink tube to try and provide a bit of strain relief for the wires between the Deutsch connector and the cable bundle. I have a pile of the tubing left over from another project and I am not looking forward to finding more when it runs out. I have no idea what makes it so expensive.

You can order single cables or (multiple) packs of ten in the FTDI webshop, that's the way I do it. The quote I mentioned was taken from there.

Gunter

So, who has cables available at this time?

Mr Hinkle? Packdog?

I need one to keep my bike out of the local shop; and thanks to both of you for providing this service.

The problem is, for some reason, the guys making the cables feel they need to make them for FREE, when the parts alone run around $40 or so, IIRC. So they charge their cost and work for nothing.

That makes no sense to me at all, and who wants to do that ... so, no cables get made.

Me, I'd be willing to pay $70-80 for another cable.

I wouldn't say no cables get made. There are two guys right in this thread who were making them. In any case, being able to tune our bikes at will is something probably all of us are willing to pay for, so whoever makes them should price them how they want. If it's within reason, they'll sell

If one already has VDSTS (technoresearch) does the same cable work OK with ECMSpy?

Whoa, thread resurrection!

Stevenknapp, No the VDSTS cable won't work because of their propreitary wiring in it so that their software recognizes it.

"I wouldn't say no cables get made. There are two guys right in this thread who were making them."

Correction is that there are two guys in this thread still making cables as far as I know. I for sure am and assume Packdog does too. I just shipped two off and a third is on it's way to a gentlemen in the service stationed in Germany right now. As I've always stated, I'll make cables on an as ordered basis for anyone who wants or needs one. Just pm me as I don't read the forums very often.

Johnboy777 said "Me, I'd be willing to pay $70-80 for another cable"
For you I'd charge $100. You've treated anyone that had a problem with their bikes and chose to depart ways like crap. You've had nothing but bad to say about me since I traded my cursed Uly off when more than enough members on here can vouch for what kind of person I am and if I'm a helpful member or not.

One last note to anyone making their own that Adafruit stopped carrying the 5V cables and went to the 3.3V ones so you need to find another vendor. Looks like Mouser is in stock again finally.

according to JEDEC TTL and LVTTL share the same signalling levels, so if you are in an urgent need, the 3.3V cables might work also.

However, I never tried this and so it's unconfirmed. On the other hand, some recent palm PDA use a LVTTL serial interface also and do connect to the ecm.

The guy at adafruit said the same thing, but I remember how picky the Buell ECM's were with connecting to some VDSTS cables due to low signal so I don't think it is worth the risk if you have one of the ECM's with a weak driver.
