According to the data sheet from FTDI,the TTL-232-R is the 5 volt version and is the version specked by Gunther on the UKBuell forum. The further lettering of WE just stands for wire ended.

Bosh,
I got the cable this afternoon and reset my TPS with it and ECMSpy. Worked like a charm. Thanks much for the cable and the advice. I hope you have received the check and if not, it should arrive by Saturday. I had sent it regular mail. Tomorrow I'm going to use it to verify my timing.

Tom,

They are the same cable. WE just means "wire end" in other words no connector on the non-usb end. The R cable has a fitting on the end you'll have to cut off so you can solder on the DEUTSCH connector.
Go to the link in my post by the top of this thread, click "buy online", scroll down to TTL-232R-WE, put one in your basket and buy it!
That's what I use and that's where I bought it. 1 GBP = ~ $2.00 US so the thing costs about $22.00 U.S. Shipping to CA was less than 7 days.

Tom,

In-fact if you're going to buy the cable, PM me your address. I have an extra DEUTSCH connector I'll send you for free.

This whole ECMSpy thing is certainly escalating. I'm thinking we users should clarify the instructions as we use the features. One thing I screwed up was "unwinding" the idle adjuster. I went so far that it came unscrewed. To fix that I had to take the air filter base-plate off and then finagle the screw end (had spring on it) of the idle adjuster cable back into the throttle cable bracket on the throttle body. Not real hard but certainly I had caused this myself and it needed fixing. Thank goodness for the Buell service manual's exploded view of the throttle body on page 4-118. By the way, that picture is misleading as it shows the cable end going into the wrong part of that cable bracket. The correct way is shown in the photo (Figure 4-99) on page 4-119.

I used the CPS zero and five volt signal on ECMSpy to verify my timing yesterday. Worked like a charm. The timing was spot on. Better than using the fuel injector cycling because you can tell whether or not you are at the top of the compression stroke with the CPS signal (per service manual instructions). And yes, I had to remove the air scoop and both plugs which is really the only big hassle in checking the timing.

This is how I secure my bike, at least when the weather cooperates. The handlebars are also tied to a couple of posts. That's an antique wood clamp holding the front tire to the 4x4.

I thought I would let everyone know that I received my cables from Mouser today and I performed a TPS reset today- everything went well. Also, I am informing everyone that EMCSpy does work with Windows ME.

I want to thank Bosh for the connector he sent me and his help to me and to the badwebbers. I got the Cable this afternoon, put it together (took a little time to get the female plugs soldered on). Had to install the driver and then took a bit to get the com port going but then success. Will take the bike out tomorrow and get it warmed up then try the tps test. so simple (after done), but sometimes we need a helping hand like Bosh's to get it done.

Denttixer,
It's my understanding the VDSTS cable and ECM Spy are not compatible. I read this on the UK Forum ECM Spy thread.

Geopatr,
I'll assume you are going to use a PC with Windows XP. Have you downloaded the driver from this link? http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Download driver version 2.02.04 from that link and save it to the same folder you have all th ECMSpy files in and then unzip it (the driver you downloaded ) since it is a compressed file.

Then once this is done you should hook your cable into a USB port on your computer ( not your bike yet ) and your Windows XP will recognize that you have new hardware and ask you some questions so that it can find the driver you just downloaded.

After it successfully reads the driver it will say so. Then you open ECMSpy and select "Default" in the popup that asks you to Select Bike/Firmware.

Hook your cable to your ULY.

Finally you need to select a Com Port. Assuming your cable is connected to one of your PC's USB ports and to your ECM on your ULY this is how I did it:
Choose "Options"
Choose "Communications"
Then under "Com Port" just choose a port one at a time until one of them works. Check that by choosing "Overview" to see if values are showing up from your ECM. If not then choose another COM Port until those values are being read to your PC screen on Overview.
I ended up getting it to work choosing "Com 4".
Of course you'll have to have your bike's cut-off switch in the ON position and your key on for power. It also help to pull the ULY light's fuse so that you aren't draining your battery too fast.

Well I got the cable hooked up and talking to the Ecmspy. Exept it isn't letting me make any changes. When I am hooked up to the bike, the controls in the functions tab are not active, so I can't do the reset : ( I wonder if I did something wrong? : (

Geopatr,
Mine did the same thing. Click on the key button (again)in ECM spy and it should activate the buttons. Not sure why but it seems to work.

When you click on the keys it makes it go off line and stops communicating with the bike. Doesnt it?

Hey guys, I am going to build a cable for my brother to use ECMSpy. I all ready have the Techno kit, but will try my cable with ECMSpy to see if I like the interface better. Anyways, if you want me to build you a cable send me an email in the next few days and I'll order extra parts and build them all at once.

So I have this Daytona Twin Tec cable from my '04 Sportster and it seems to have the proper DEUTSCH connector (4 pin, 3 wires) and a USB on the other side. I wonder if this would work with ECMSpy. All I want to do is reset my TPS when swapping between ECMs. Any ideas if Sportsters and Buells use the same connector and if it might work?
