"so this is what you want us to do? -just mind our own business, and let you be the sole ambassador of truth and wisdom concerning all Uly's, because the rest of us are a bunch of wannabe's? are you serious?" Right on Thelumex...I don't think everyone are wannabe's....But I obvioulsy know more about motorcycles than most here, and like I said....Everything I told Coloradogirl is 100% true. Now like I said, this is between Coloradogirl and I,the rest of you can go watch reruns of Star Trek, or play with your Star Wars figurines. Thanks |

In my PERSONAL OPINION . . . both those statements are highly inaccurate and I'd welcome you to support either one of them. I've tested, yeah, actually been paid to do, it motorcycles . . . and spent a number of years orbiting the industry owning as many as 9 bikes at a time and I barely know squat. The industry (business side) and the product (with changing design, test, analysis and manufacturing techniques) is changing so rapidly, I am immediately suspect of anyone claiming any level of omniscience. Let me add this to what you may have told Coloradogirl . . ."The Buell Ulysses is a very reliable, top-quality motorcycle". If Coloradogirl would like, please extend my invitation to take her to Buell, spend a couple hours watching folks build the Ulysses, sit down with the testing and QA folks and then she can draw her own conclusions. I'd suggest she also contact the other manufacturers under consideration and tell them she would like to spend a couple hours wandering the assembly line and debriefing the design and quality folks. Buell offers an amazing product. Perfect. . . nope. But there is great comfort in knowing they don't suffer from the "if we can’t see it, it ain't happening" BMW engineering virus. I'd encourage you to become better educated and mete the words of your worldly clarvoyence with added restraint. I'd start by hanging a sign on your wall that proclaims the old addage. . . "Tis better to be thought an idiot than to speak and remove all doubt." Court |

Colorado girl ignore the bickering and the comments and take Court up on his offer. You will like the bike and only you will know if it is what you want once you ride it. I love mine but it isn't perfect for what I do but I made my choice and do it anyway. No bike is perfect for what I do, yet. |

Court Let me add this to what you may have told Coloradogirl . . ."The Buell Ulysses is a very reliable, top-quality motorcycle". ____________________ I love Buells, I'm on my 5th, but my 06 Uly was not by any measure reliable. It was a piece of crap. I have the tow bills to prove it. Thats only one bike, but when you get left stranded repeatedly it kind of pisses you off. So after the last three week stay in service, I said you want it that bad keep it. Took a 2008 Firebolt off the floor at 900 miles smoke starts coming from the front of the engine. The wire that holds the clutch cable from away from the exhaust snapped and melted my clutch cable. I have had a 2003 Lightning that was trust worthy, a 2004 Firebolt that was faithful, my 2006 Uly was possessed by the devil. |

Court, Ever the diplomat and highly accurate. Crusty, Plain spoken and factual and spot-freaking-on in his analysis. Bertotti, I kind of agree with you too, but I disagree with your characterization (more opinion than anything else.) It's not bickering when owners of the platform raise the BS flag -- it's just calling a spade a spade IMO. I, for one, refuse stand-by idly when someone is spewing falsehoods about something I'm intimately familiar with. Is the Uly the perfect motorcycle? No, it isn't -- that role is reserved for the 2002 M2 Cyclone, but the Uly is approaching that same level. This cat, Ntmsumpin, came on here insulting everyone that disagreed with his analysis of the motorcycle and for those that have been in/around Badweb for more than a few months they know, with certainty, that the vast majority of the dissenting opinions are coming from long-term owners of the Buell brand, long-term motorcyclists, and to a person none of us have any reservations about putting our true thoughts up in this forum. I don't know this guy, but I'd help him if he'd let me. Everyone knows that Court would've (I'd say the Golden Hour has expired for that to happen, but Court never runs out of surprises) jumped in (I'd add on his dime) to help this guy out if given the opportunity. I have no problem minding my business and do so often, but if you're going to post up a big old pile of stupid and I know for a fact that it's big old pile of stupid then I'm going to weigh in with my thoughts on the issue. Kind of like arguing with a bag of hammers,,,,,the hammers always win. G2 |

Bigdaddy I agree to a point but usually choose to ignore the rabble rousers after a few rebuttals are posted. (A smart individual would take you all up on the offer for help!!!!) not doing so makes one wonder. Coloradogirl do you still have a bike? if so find a Uly owner out there that wants to do a mountain run. I don't think that would be to hard, and try the bike out in the hills. I've seen the ride reports form the guys out there, they seem to always be up for a run. |

Crusty.."The industry (business side) and the product (with changing design, test, analysis and manufacturing techniques) is changing so rapidly"....I've been in the manufactoring business for over a quarter of a century now...working on bikes is my side job I do to take my mind off of all the b.s. involved in the first one. This design, test, analysis, techniques are all words straight out of the "Dog and Pony Show" handbook. The fact that you get paid to test these leaves me suspect of any real facts from you. I test drove my bike for about 10 minutes before I ended up buying it...of course it was in the fall, when hot temperatures weren't a factor, and of course the bike was new, and not had a chance to transform yet. These bikes might be reliable and top quality..not even in the same ball park compared to my Hondas, Huskys, Hodaka, and Suzukis, of my past. Take Coloradogirl to the Buell factory ahow her around use words like Global Manufactoring Systems, ISSO Qualified, Quality, Inspection Stations...let everyone smile and wave at her as she walks through..makes no difference, it's still an overall turd. I like my bike, but it's still a turd, and one fact in life is "You Can't Polish a Turd". She should really look elsewhere unless she wants to spend money on a problematic bike. It just pisses me off to spend this kind of money on an American made product and have it so poorly engineered. It has so many great features, but it's the ones beneath the shiney skin that kills it....Again look at the recent articles with Erik Buell grining ear to ear with a new, non archaic engine with a radiator on both sides of the frame, with two huge air scoops directing air flow to them...hmmm, what a concept. You die hards can say what you want...everything I've said is 100% true, the other posts on this forum can back me up...I was just trying to do her a solid. The rest of you can mind your own business and quit trying to dispute my expertice. God knows I'm telling the truth...are you call him a liar? |

Ntmmd8r, you can rant and rave all you want about the Ulysses but NO way are you going to change the way I feel about my 2006 XB12X Ulysses! Mine has been perfect in every way and I haven't had a single problem other that getting a flat tire, which I plugged and continued to ride another 9000 miles before changing it. My Ulysses now has 14,700 trouble-free miles on it and runs like new, maybe even a little better since it's broken in now. You complain about the dealer and their service program. Have you ever spoken to the owner of dealership or called Buell's customer service? My dealer talked me into purchasing my first Buell back in 1998 and I try to remember and thank him every chance I get because the dealership has been very good to work with. This last year at the Buell homecoming in East Troy, I personally thanked Erik for coming out with the Ulysses which I told him is the best motorcycle I've ever owned or ridden for that matter. You complain about the heat the motor gives off. Get over it! It's an air-cooled motorcycle and they do get hot. Why not try riding with pants on like a man? and your last post where you mention God, well I'm not even going to comment on that B.S. it was a laugh and I feel it has just about destroyed all of your creditability of all your previous post now. I'm going riding now and no longer have time to respond to this nonsense! |

>>>>...everything I've said is 100% true Actually, I'd disagree. But, this is the internet, the place where midgets brag of NBA contracts, and you are allowed to embrace you own version, even in the face of contradictory facts, as you wish. The small mind it a cramped place to live. This design, test, analysis, techniques are all words straight out of the "Dog and Pony Show" handbook. Actually, it's straight from the 3 magazines that recently provided Buell with some neat awards for "Industrial Design" and their cutting edge use of analysis. They are not motorcycle mags, mind you but advanced design media. I'm confident you don't read them. >>>>The fact that you get paid to test these leaves me suspect of any real facts from you. You do understand, correct me if I am wrong, that the last two motorcycles I was paid to ride are BMW and Ducati. I used to periodically speak on Ducati's behalf and spent a good amount of time being wined and dined by BMW when I moved to NYC. Thanks Lucy Flynn . . . . but no thanks. Explain to me how you are suspect. . . >>>>have it so poorly engineered.
quote:"One manufacturers after another, desperate to find adequate muffler volume, has turned to Buell's underslung solution. High, side-mounted mufflers now look clumsy, even dated" --CYCLE WORLD October 2007
Let me explain something Clarence. . . . Stupid is straight line . . . not a circle. You can't continue to charge ahead as you have and hope to eventually return to the "smart starting place". The only cure is to shut your mouth and open your mind. It's cool here when folks express opinions, we've a number or quite diverse and well considered ones. Spewing, presumably for no reason beyond simply being obtuse, seldom endears one to either friends or allies. I like to help Buell people. At my personal expense I help over a hundred in any given year. I act out of passion and a love for the people I meet. Most here will quickly tell you that I, with all my quirks, am pretty quick to take up the case of the Buell owner with a problem. But, being personally invested in this process, the first acid test is that I confine my activities to exclusively nice people . . . not ones who I agree with mind you, but NICE people. You've been, to quote Mom. . . a bit of a stinker. The good news is that there are a host of great motorcycles out there. I dropped my BMW off at the shop last week and was amazed at all the nifty new iterations of the 650. I suspect you'd be better served with a Ducati or a BMW. Buells, in the hands of grouches, are simply not happy motorcycles. Court P.S. - I'll share with you the refrain to a song I've been working on today . . . I suspect it's germane. . .

Court, Nice tune. Colorado Girl, Never mind about the differing views. The great thing about the current motorcycle scene is that there is so much diversity that you can find what you are looking for. Everyone likes something different. I bought an early 06 Uly and here are my impressions after 2 years and 14K miles of riding it: - Dealer network is the biggest problem. I have problems getting anything done from my local dealer but I have worked around that by using Vendors here at the BadWeb and American Sportbike. Definitely check out your local dealer before buying. - The Uly is very easy to do self maintenance on. - The Uly is incredibly versatile and fun. I have ridden a lot of motorcycles over the years and I have never been on a bike that I enjoy more than my Uly. I am in constant grin mode when rolling on that bike. My cheeks actually ache sometimes after riding it from my perma grin pressing my cheeks into my helmet. - I live up 3 miles of rough, steep, rutted dirt road. Every ride that I take involves 6 miles of dirt road. The Uly is an "all road" bike and it handles rough road just fine. The frame is very rigid and the suspension is excellent. Tires are the limiting factor. I have poked it down some trails but it is not fun in this environment. Mud is not good for Ulys. - Twisty roads are sublime on the Uly. The broad, torquey powerband and great frame and suspension make it a joy. It is really in it's element on twisty two lane backroads. - The bike is very comfortable. I took mine on a week long 2000 mile cruise 2 up and had a great time on it. - BadWeb is great. There is a lot of good information here that helps make up for the dealer issues. - The engineering from Buell is, IMHO, excellent. Where else can you find a small company that comes up with truly innovative ideas like Buell? Their underslung muffler design, top mounted airbox, ZTL brake/wheel design, fixed idler belt final drive, and other great ideas are world class. I really like being on a bike that is different, unique, and well engineered. It is clear that Buell engineers also ride their products. - My Uly has been a reliable motorcycle. I have had a few minor troubles but overall it has been a great bike to date, especially considering that it was a very early 06 model. You should absolutely take Court up on his offer to visit Buell and you should get a test ride ASAP. In the end you will have to decide for yourself. |

Court...If I could buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you think your worth, I'd buy Microsoft. If you're not a "so called midget bragging about a NBA contract" that I suspect you are then you are undoubtedly s suckass yes man... live with it. Let me clear up some of my frustrations.. the workmanship of this bike has been awesome..second to none..except for the idiot on the assembly line tighting the oil lines. The design and engineering, and ulmtimately the fact that Erik Buell had to prostitute himself out to HD to stay afloat is the biggest problem with this bike..I'll say it again..I love the bike..If I could wash it and set it in a case to admire it, it would be one of the finest works of arts there is...but in the real world, out on the road it's basically a turd...but cool weather is coming and it won't be quite as bad the turd as it is in what is normally called "riding season." The thing handles and stops like a dream, don't get it going over the speed limit though. This post was brought up by Coloradogirl and I'm addressing her...I'll say it again, if you don't like what I'm telling her, tough..it's the truth. Please just drop it...I always get the last word. |

Ntmmd8r, You obviously haven't met Court. My '06 Ulysses has some "turd" like issues also. In 21,000 miles over the last year and a half it has left me wondering about making it back home twice, needed towed to the dealer once. It has been fixed under warranty at least seven times. Never in my 32+ years of riding have I ever found a machine that makes me grin as much as this one. The only ones that were really close were a couple of race cars that required way too much time for maintenance and money, and a dirt bike that tore me up as much as I did it. That includes over 14 street bikes, 15 dirt bikes of all wheel denominations, snowmobiles, boats, uncounted cars including several Corvettes, show cars, and many trucks. Almost every single one of them had warranty issues or broke or needed some kind of extraneous maintenance. I have had four new vehicles that had no issues at all, 1998 Dodge dually diesel(2 years 36,000 miles), a 1984 Honda ATC 200X(unknown miles, but a lot of hard riding in two years), a 1986 Honda ATC 350X(only had it 1 year), 2005 Buell City-X(a year and a half, 13,500 miles). I too expect a lot of a new machine,I know the only reason I don't get bent about the problems that have come up with my Ulysses, is the good people here on the BadWeb. The dealers couldn't answer my questions about the problems and the service managers are the same you get in any car dealership, where they try to tell you what you want to hear, or they go a long ways toward telling you they haven't got a clue as to what is wrong. I have found a dealership that actually listens to me about what the problem is, and I usually go in after I have information from this BadWeb. I have actually shown them threads as to what the problem is and how to fix it. I have never had to go to BCS for any of the problems that my bike has had. Is Coloradogirl for real? Did you read the questions in her first post and how it was a verbatim copy from another web sight? This has me wondering how far a person will go to back up what they are saying based on a thread started on such questionable grounds. Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow. |

Cccpull, Sorry for taking so long to answer your question. I have been on a two wheel road trip since Friday. I decided to sell my Uly because I work on motorcycles frequently and when I tried to share information with the factory regarding some early problems that I had, I was not impressed. I have very little confidence in my local dealership. When I called Buell CS they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable but they would not work directly with me and instructed me to go through my dealer. There were also a couple of fundamental questions that Buell CS could not or would not answer. I called them several times and wrote to them and to this date, I have never been contacted. Then early this year an "Anonymous" post on this website challenged my observations but provided little response when I asked him/her the same question that I asked Buell CS. I sold the bike because every time I looked at it it reminded me of a failed relationship with the manufacturer. Now in fairness to the motorcycle, the Uly is a great bike and I do miss it. It is made for taller people and it is fast and comfortable. It is a bike that I could ride all day and just stop for gas and feel refreshed when I got off of it in the evening. You got to ride one to see for yourself! If you buy one find a dealer that has a good reputation with Buells or work on it yourself. They are very easy to work on. |

ColoradoGirl, For a truely honest opinion of the ULY go to the Tales section and read The FBRAT story line. Ferris took my very early 06 ULY from Wisconsion to California. Documented the entire adventure and gave a very forthright evaluation, warts and all. I rode it back from LA to Minnesota and gave my review. The FBRAT tale sort of brings together the Buell experience, it is the people and the ride. I like Buell people even better than the BMW sport tour crowd and they are one fine group of people too. It is sort of funny to get a different perspective on Court tho, who I first met in 1996, did I mention I was riding and he was trailering. My first meeting with Court and he wasn't riding, not a lot of people have ever seen him with a bike on a trailer, he travels mainly at night when doing embarasing things, I hear. Evaluation of my ULY is, I would buy one again. They are that good. |

I don't know if Coloradogirl is for real or not, but if she is, I sure hope she's tall, or she'll have some problems with this one. I like it's stance, but it has sure cost a lot of broken sidestands from people using them for stirrups. I can understand a few glitches with a new bike, but this whole package is very poorly engineered. It's just has to many issues that can't have a couple of parts replaced to fix..like I said before, "You can't polish a turd." As far as my bike goes, I keep looking around to see if Alan Funt came back to life and I'm on Candid Camera. Court...If you really did have something to do with the testing of this thing, the more comments you make are just turning you into more of a laughing stock....you have know idea who your messing with, junior. |

HEY FOLKS! IT'S A FRICKIN' BIKE! If you buy it and don't like it, sucks, but you move on. Sometimes great manufacturers create goat screw clusters. You may have gotten one. It doesn't mean that they are ALL bad. I have had some issues with mine. It doesn't mean that mine is bad. It just means that it was the first year model with items that were improved later. I have only had one recurring problem because the replacement BAS was placed in the old position (before the recall). I don't understand people who become so completely rabid over stupid crap like ONE bad bike experience out of a lifetime of ownership. There are a few folks here with hellish Uly stories. There are dozens here with fantastic stories. Somehow those who ring the bell of the folly of Erik Buell are prophets and those who extol the virtues of their Uly ownership are "yes men". WTF? I have NEVER seen anyone who consistently rants of the problems with their bike receive any assistance. I HAVE seen folks who look to find support and assistance with their bike find it from multiple sources within and without BMC. Sorry for the rant, but damn folks! We are talking about toys. Items we buy and use for pleasure. If it causes this must displeasure, back away from it and walk away. |

Wow!!! I have been lurking on this site for some time. Posted over a year ago about buying a Uly but financial obligations have postponed my purchase. I do not post often but found this thread irresistible. I have read many posts from many of the wonderful people here, including Court. This site among others has done nothing but convince me that I want a Uly even more. A bike to me is for daily transportation often getting 20k+ miles a year, so I do my research. Though I do not consider myself any kind of authority I have quite a bit of riding experience on anything with two, three or four wheels since a young teenager, a lot of that in the dirt, approximately 1.5 million miles in Jeeps all over the continent in the most extreme terrain and always performing all modifications and most repairs on all of my vehicles. A good friend purchased a Uly while helping me research the bike (yes I am envious) and 18k miles and a year later he still loves the bike. Only major issue is a burnt out fan. I have put a bunch of miles on it and desire one more every time I ride it. I believe there is no ideal vehicle out there. There are always those that like one enough to feel passionate about it. The KTM guys LOVE their bikes but we all know they have plenty of problems. The Beemer guys LOVE their boxers but they are costly and not without problems. My friends supposedly rock solid Suk had nothing but problems from the day he picked it up that it eventually was taken back by the manufacturer as a lemon (a dangerous one at that). Does this mean that all of these products and manufacturers should be treated unjustified and avoided by potential customers? I use to research new technology before companies spent millions of dollars and it was the same thing. One guy LOVED a certain product or name brand and had a passion for it, and another guy for another product. What I never put any credit in was someone that instead of giving a unbiased assessment of a product, good or bad and maybe recommending what they consider a better product and why is someone who chooses to bash a product with the intensity of a scorned woman and when hears another's fair evaluation chooses to ridicule and degrade in such a way as to make themselves seem extraordinarily imprudent and irrational. A simple but genuine opinion has a lot more significance. (Message edited by kars on September 10, 2007) |

My Uly has hardly been trouble free. What I have discovered is that the dealer and Buell CS have been very active in making the bike right. Is my Uly perfect? No, but it is still a great bike, the best handling and riding bike I have ever owned. If you are shopping for a bike, and the Uly fits, Give it a try. You will find that Buell is more interested in your ownership than any other brand. The dealer may be hit and miss, but this is true of any dealer, regardless of brand. Good luck in your choice of rides. |
