When you turn the bars slowly from center to either side at slow speed or sitting still (very rarely) the headlights blink off and on. After about a week of this intermittent condition they decide to stop working completely while riding in the mountains 60 miles from home in the late afternoon (read..getting dark). Needless to say, the trip home was VERY exciting. Bike is now at the shop to have the wiring repaired/replaced where it wraps around the steering head. Oh, the warranty expires in 2 months.............perfect timing! |

I bought my 06' in Oct of 05'. At that time Buell had a promotion going that automatically extended the warranty to cover the non-riding winter months. So my warranty is good until March or April of 08'. Anybody else remember this??? |

I think I remember something about this but am not sure. I used my 98 S3 yesterday and the right hand mirror fell of and slid down the road into a storm drain. They are still available for only $47......Good old inexpensive Buell parts. I want my ULY back.... |

Hey Rc, Just had my '06 Uly into Appleton (WI) Harley for a similar problem. My low beam quit working and then the high beam would only come on after I ran it up over 5,000 rpms. Turns out the headlight relay was out. Perfect timing for me as well, my warranty expires in a week and a half. Jon (Message edited by 12x9sl on September 09, 2007) |

If you haven't already, get the new style wire harness guide. It helps take the sharp turn out of the harness as it wraps around the head tube. Could help prevent future problems. |

How does having a failed relay end up getting a new style wiring harness? What is the new style? What does it cost? What is the advantage? What is involved in installation etc? |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the change just in the harness guide, not the harness itself? |

I was talking about the plastic guide. Not the harness itself. The "new" style (2007) routs the wire down more and reduces the contact with the fork tube at full lock. It prevents your harness from getting to this condition (Pic). I was looking for a picture but cant find one. It's the piece that holds this mess against the head tube:

Remove the wire harness from the plastic guide. It causes undue stress on the wires and steering. Search for my thread about rerouting the wires outside the guide that most folks ignored. |

My headlight did the same thing. Turned out to be an ohmic crimp in the ground lug shown just southwest of that nasty harness picture. Recrimped with a new ground lug, problem gone. |

From Windriders post on Jm's thread: The new bit is PN # Y1000.2AK and it will cost you all of $3.15. HIGHLY recommended to avoid cable bundle damage and give you full left lock turning ability. Joels method or a combination of the two (cut ziptie and the new 07 }piece) works as well, that's what I did. Actually, I don't think I cut mine but just loosened it up if I remember right. JM.. Great post BTW, not sure how I missed that one (Message edited by bosh on September 10, 2007) |

Just an update on the lights. A broken ground wire in the harness was responsible. The dealer put a new ground wire on and everything was Ok until the horn quit the first time I tried it on the way home. Same symptoms as the lights...power to and power from but not getting to ground. I made a short jumper/ground, put it in and now the horn works fine. I wonder how many more wires inside the harness are going to break before the harness will be replaced??????? |
