Hey guys, I've had the beast for 2 months now, done just on 5,000 miles which included a trip up to Scotland and last month a tour to South of France and Italy and the back tyre is shot! More than shot actually, it's decidedly illegal (well, over here it is).

I've gotta say this bike is great. We had every kind of weather, from 30 degrees (Centigrade) to 7 degrees, blazing hot to torrential rain and the bike just shrugged it all off.

I do have a couple of gripes though. Do you guys over the pond suffer from corrosion issues? On a bike that's just 2 months old I'm seeing rust on the muffler, rusty wheel bearings and small spots of rust on the headers. Is this normal? Can I claim for these under warranty?

A couple of pics - this is one of the many mountain passes we did in the French Alps and a few more of the guys. Some interesting bikes but I had no trouble keeping up (in fact, it was quite the reverse!).

Next big trip - Austrian Alps in August. Now, what tyres should I get - Michelin Pilot Road 2's are calling my name right now.....

Which tires, Dunlops or Pirelli's. My stock Dunlop is about shot with 3000 miles on it. I've heard similar complaints about the muffler and noticed some rust around my bearings myself but hadn't heard about the header corroding. Don't know about the warranty, can't hurt to try.

Otherwise, I love the bike. I'm looking at Continental road attacks next.

Hey Muppet, is that the Dunlop or the Pirelli?

Beautiful scenery. Looks like a killer ride!

Now that I can see the pics I see they are Dunlops. and I'm jealous of the curves. NE Ohio has almost no curves and few hills even.

JK3 - It's the Dunlop. To be honest I reckon it was shot around 4,000 miles but I was halfway round Europe and I didn't want to faff around buying tyres, so I made it last! At least now I can get some decent stuff, the fronts only half worn but I'm gonna put a pair of proper road tyres on as I doubt I'll be doing much more than the odd track.

Another pic for you, it's the Verdon Gorge in the South of France. Superb roads and fantastic scenery.

Rusty wheel bearings are an inherent HD type of thing. My softail has the same issues. I have heard of some corrosion on the muffler but this is the first I am hearing about it on the headers.

I am insanely jealous right now looking at some of the pictures you posted. Keep at it and I may have to put a drool guard on my keyboard.

Beautiful scenery Muppet!

There are a few riders on this list that have had their mufflers replaced under warranty for the corrosion issue.

This is the first I've heard about the header and wheel bearings though. Write in and let us know how it pans out for you.

And more inspiring pictures too!

Nice pics! I know someone from this forum had their muffler replaced under warranty. It is a common complaint. I'm thinking of bringing it to the dealer's attention later in the season to get some mileage with the one I have.

They replaced my muffler and it wasn't real bad but it was noticeable. Dillon Brothers HD/Buell called somebody at Buell to make sure it was ok and Buell said to cover it. If it happens again I'll just spray it with rust converter and then rattle can with barbecue grill paint and call er done.

The rust on the bearings wipes off. Add a little rust inhibiting grease to the outside and you're golden.

The rusty muffler is a known issue. It's mostly surface rust, but still annoying. It should be replaced under warranty.

At 5,000 miles I was on my third set.

PS. You need to move somewhere that doesn't look like crap. I hear Kansas is nice this time of year. ;)

MORE PICTURES!!!!!!!!

My muffler is rusting as well. At some point soon I need to see about getting it replaced under warranty.

I've had good luck with the Avons so far, but I'd be interested to see some first-hand reviews of the Road IIs.

The mufflers rust. I ceramic coated mine, so I shouldn't have to worry about that any more.

If the instructions for removing the headers from the bike were less intimidating, I'd have ceramic coated them as well. That would also help with heat.

Thanks for the replies, seems like I should bring all this to the dealers attention when I take it in for it's 5k service in a week or so. Can't see any point in getting them replaced until near the end of the 2 year warranty, but I'll see what they say in the shop.

If you guys want to see more pictures and the full write up of our tour, here's a link to our website that has that one written up. I run tours all over Europe, we had 50 people and 34 bikes on that trip, which was great. Let me know if anyone fancies coming over and seeing Europe, I'll cut you a good deal.

Muppet,

Great pics!

I would recommend the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs over the Dunlops. I am getting better wear from the Pirellis and they have better traction all around as well.

The Pirellis seem to be made to match the Uly perfectly IMHO.

My 2nd rear tire is just about shot and I am thinking about going with another Metzler Roadteck Z6. The first one did OK.
