Had a relaxed weekend of riding up in VT for the weekend, the Uly is now broken in, and her are my random thoughts, questions... I am used to riding a Concours, so the extra airflow afforded by the Uly was very welcome this weekend with temps almost in the 90's at times. I have the tall screen but opted not to install it until I did some time with the stock screen. The bike really likes to cruise at 75+ MPH, it settles into a sweet zone. Anything lower than 70 in top gear and the bike feels a bit "thumpy". Once it is in the sweet spot, I feel like I can ride it all day. Is the Uly top gear taller than on the Firebolt? I have definitely experienced the "swimming" sensation from the Dunlops. It is not scary, but definitely noticeable. Other than that the tires perfomed well in the twisties with no surprises. They also posed no problem riding through downpours and drizzles. Why is the fan on all the time? It never ran this much on my Firebolt. No pinging, even in some slow moving traffic where I could really start to feel some heat coming off the engine. My S3T would've been pinging like a sum'bi%ch in these conditions. I can't say there is anything wrong with the fuel injection, but I did notice while riding under steady light load at slow speeds at about 3000 rpms, there was occasionally a very very tiny hint of a stumble. Nothing to write home about, but I will be conscious to see how it plays out over time. Overall it is a phenomenal machine. I felt at home on it immediately. It was a blast running up Okemo mounatin and Ascutney mountain, where I did "pre-runs" with a friend who does hillclimb racing in his GXSR1000 powered dwarf racecar. He was riding a well used '86 Concours with his girlfriend on the back, and I couldn't keep up. Just goes to show it's generally 90% rider, not the bike. On the way home I took a 5 mile detour though a local state park and was impressed how the bike handled a pretty rough unpaved one lane road. The tires hooked up well and I even caught myself lofting the front wheel a couple of times off some bumps. I can't wait to ride this thing more!! |

I am at 5300 on my Uly and I think there is some variation among them. My fan ran all the time it seemed until about 2400 miles. Even when it was in the low 40's it would run. The 1000 mile check helps a little but it mostly just takes time for the engine to breakin. Same with mileage it keeps getting a little better over time. I switched to synthetic oil at 1k. If I had to do it over again I might wait a little longer. |
