Although this is no fairy tale, it is a story with a happy ending. TROYYZ’s Uly (the Virgin) waited patiently 4-1/2 months for him to go to Alabama to pick her up. Which he just recently accomplished... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/278400.html?1179784288
Meanwhile, I have had my Uly (the Farkled) back in Colorado since February (purchased in January while in Alabama) and it has seemed like a new accessory has been added or a customization done just about every week or two. Finally, today in Colorado, the two Alabama Uly’s met again. Since TROYYZ and I work together, we just had to head out during lunch for a little ride. It was a short but fun one hour ride, accompanied by heavy rain!

Max, You beat me to painting the cases. I am in the process of having mine color matched to the stock orange. I remember when you went to Sunset Orange, but the case painting to match is a rather new farkle for you right? |

Well if Troyyz and I aren’t heading out for a ride during lunch, we're out saving the world.

OK, maybe not the world, but at least a couple stranded hikers near the top of Pikes Peak.
Here's the landing site, just under 13,000 of Pikes Peak 14,000+ feet.
Some happy hikers in the back of the Blackhawk after being stranded on the mountain all night. It was -5 degrees F at 9 AM, so I’m sure that it was pretty cold for them last night.
Of course one last scenic picture on the way back down from the rescue; Garden of the God’s in Colorado Springs. There are many nice roads around that need a couple Uly’s to ride on them!
Tough job, but someone has to do it! |

is that paint on the hard bags, or more dye? If paint, what was the color match? |

It is paint. The dye was fading from UV light, so I decided to paint the fly screen, and the luggage while I was at it. I'll post another thread in the next couple days about the process, but basically I took a sample piece of the Sunset Orange to an auto paint store and had them do a PPG electronic match. The color is very close, but not perfect. I guess color injected plastic is really tough for the computer to match. |

Maximum- I sure hope the factory takes notes from your Ulysses for updates. I think the added color really looks great, and from the response in the threads where you post pics it looks like I'm not alone. Keep up the good work. |

Crusty: Take your fly screen to an automotive paint store, they can computer match it with a PPG hand held computer matching system. That is if you want to paint it yourself. Or you can have a professional paint shop do it for you, that way it will be their job to make sure the color is matched properly. I was quoted $350 do have someone do the job for me. Top of the line paints cost me about $200, but I have enough paint to do about 4 complete sets of Uly luggage. If there is a Uly owner on Badweb with paint skills, you may want to have 3-4 people share the cost of paint and have that person do all three or four sets (for a little fee of course). I do like the looks of the matched luggage! |

What a great job you guys have! The shear beauty of that region has got to make the risks worth while. I like the red on your Uly. I was actually glad to see you go to paint rather than the dye. If the paint is properly applied and the correct products are used you will have a long lasting higher quality finish. I do own a body shop and I have a paint mixing system along with the correct plastic adhearing and flexing chemicals. I have to color match all of my customer stuff better than the PPG color spec analyzer can do, or I would never get a job out the door. They can get close, but it is never close enough. Since my Uly is the faster color, I am looking into mixing some of the Uly barricade orange sometime soon and can help anyone with color changing their plastics as well as aluminum and steel etc. Shoot me an E-mail if you are interested. |

Etennuly: Wish I know of you a couple weeks ago! I know what you are talking about, the Sunset Orange that the PPG computer came up with is close, very close, but not perfect. Most people will probably not notice (unless they are looking for it), but I can tell. Hopefully it will not bug me too much. If so, I may be emailing you to re-do it for me. |

Hey Etennuly, I do some custom painting myself on the side once in a while but I don't know quite how to tackle my plastic 2001 S3T fuel tank that has begin to bubble. I know I should strip it down and re-seal it but what product do you recommend for sealing a plastic fuel tank before the primer? BC Steve |

Just about every major brand paint has a cleaner for plastics and an adhesive for plastics and a flex add for plastics in addition to the paint, reducers, and hardners and the normal sanding and cleaning materials. It doesn't take much of each product, but this stuff gets real expensive if you don't use it in your business routine. I would try to just sand the old finish off with a DA probably starting off with 180 grit then going to 320 grit and finish sanding by hand and water with 600 grit, make sure you have all of the DA marks out, then start with the cleaner for plastics, then the adhesive for plastics, then just a little flex add in the base coat or single stage. Stay away from primers and sealers unless you really need them. The less material on the surface, the less chance of failure of the surface. |
