Can any of you guys with GPS units tell me how it compares with the Uly speedometer. I don't have a GPS to compare with, but my bike feels like it's moving 5 mph slower than what the speed indicates. I'm just curious. Thanks |

No GPS yet, but the town I live in has one of those "your speed is..." signs they park on the side of the road. At 40 mph indicated on the speedo the sign reads 37-38 mph. Good enough for me. YMMV. |

I think error creeps in as speed increases. Take a look at the "Top Speed on a Uly" thread. It's as much as 12 MPH off at top speeds. Must have been designed by the Yamaha tach people. |

I thought so. I usually cruise at about 75 mph, but it sure feels like 70 mph. |

My experience has shown the speedo error is somewhere around 5 percent. |

That is, 5% on my bike using my own high-sensitivity differential GPS. |

I was wondering this too, on my Buell Quest GPS, it will say a few MPH less than what my bike says. Typically the gauge will say about 60 and my GPS will say 56 or 57. It seems to get a bit worse as you get higher, like GPS saying 75 while the gauge said 80. I took the GPS in my car and went for a 3 hour drive, and it was always within 1mph whenever i looked. |

Most bikes are off 5%-10% in speed. This may sound stupid but 2 reasons this is done is 1. Now you can speed without really doing so. 2. This raises your odometer higher than it should be. After awhile you'll see how this increases the profits of the dealers servicing your bikes. ( I know, a lot service their own, but a lot do not.) A number of car companies do the same. Even the warranty expires sooner. A win win for the manufacturers. (Message edited by ridetherejk on May 17, 2007) |

As of 1997, federal standards in the United States allow a maximum 5% error on speedometer readings on new cars sold here. Also, the displayed speed is a calculated from the engine speed and tire size. A change in tires, even from one brand to another of the same size, can change things a little. Changing to a taller tire makes your speedo read low. Jack |

Varies somewhat, but usually the GPS is 5 miles an hour faster than the speedo. |

Mine is right around 5% compared to the GPS. Which is much better than the 10% from the SV. It also will get worse as the tires wear and become smaller. |

I know that in our jurisdiction the only certified way to test a speedometer acurately for court is to use a Radar. Hey I can do that. I do it all the time on our police cruisers. I think I will and I will. We test at 50-80 and 100 kph. I will get back at you all. |

My GPS reads 58 mph at 60 mph on the speedometer. 2 mph less than actual which is 3% error. |

My speedo is 5-7% higher than the GPS readings at all speeds. |

It seems as though there is a consensus on the average Speedo error being about 2% to 5% based on GPS comparisons. Has anyone looked into the accuracy of our tachometers? Using the formula for speed/RPM/gear ratio/tire diameter, should give the most accurate speed at a given RPM, if the tach is accurate and tire wear is taken into account. Ahh how things have changed. We used to look up formulas and figure things out, and maps to see where we are, now we look at the face of a $500 GPS unit and take the thinking away. Life is becoming a video game more and more, every day. Ride'm while you got'em folks. The next generation will ask why did you go to all of that expense and effort to go out in the elements for a ride on a dangerous machine like that? |

So, heres a stupid question.. Is there any "fix" for the speedo error? I hate to resurrect this thread just to ask...but I have to know. My 06 12X is apparently showing "slower than go" speed. |

I fixed mine with a Zumo. I rarely pay much attention to the speedo. I mostly watch the tach. If I want to know exact speed, I look at the gps. |

I intensionally broke the speedo on my bike, makes it a bit easier to stretch the truth to the cops Anyway, i got a Veypor VR2 and Garmin Zumo that i use for getting the speed. Remember, its 60mph at 3000rpm in 5th, and 10mph in 500 rpm increments. 70 is 3500, 80 is 4000, 90 is 45, etc. |
