Rear Dunlop is now due to be replaced. Front has heaps of tread left. I haven't decided on what I will replace the rear with. Just wanted to check in as to whether there are any combinations of the stock front with a replacement rear that doesn't work. Or perhaps I should stay with a 616 until the front needs to be changed?

I went through two D616 and the front still was good. I swapped to the Perrili Syncs and it was a world of difference. I did run the Perrili on the front for a week before changing out the rear 616 and felt no ill affects.

I ran the D616 rear for 6000 miles, replaced it with a Scorpion Sync, 6000 miles later another Sync on the rear. I am now at 14,200 with the original Dunlop still on the front.

Mixing the tires like that is not a problem unless you plan on an all out race assault in some heavy corners. If you know what you have under you, you can plan how you are going to ride.

As soon as that wobbly sumbich on the front wears out enough it will be replaced with a Scorpion Sync also.

I know I've said this in previous posts but check with your insurance company and make sure they will cover the bike if it has mismatched tires. I worked at a harley/buell dealer that had a ton of crash bikes, and there is a checkpoint the insurance company goes through to try and find a reason not to cover. Some insurance companies won't cover an at fault with mismatched tires. Just something to consider.

Replaced rear Dunlop at 7k w/ Avon AV46. Replaced front Dunlop at 20k w/ Sync. No ill effects noted. At 25k now and the second AV46 is about to be replaced with an AV56.

What you really have to be mindful of is not the mixing of brands\types of tires but in the profile. If you run a round profile on one end and a triangular profile on the other this could lead to very bad handling dynamics. Most manufacturers will have the information available to you. But a rule of thumb on any sporting motorcycle is to not "mix and match" your buns. I have never ran brand\profile x on one end and brand\profile y on the other. I have always kept them matched.

One other thing to consider is the fact of wet traction. Avon and Metzler both provide wet siping for the front tire only. The rear tire has no siping at all.

Other manufactures, Michelin, Dunlop, Pirelli, etc, split the siping between the front and rear tire. The rear is designed to continue the siping created by the front tire. Mismatched tires will have different siping characteristics.

Just a thought. If you're never in the rain, it won't be an issue.

Profile, compound and carcass all have an impact in mixing tires.

The 616s suck. Replace them both.

Front has heaps of tread left.

I discovered that front tires (in particular a 616 on the front of a Uly) can wear out before the tread disappears if they get cupped. Check it for cupping and replace it if you notice any. It will be like riding a different bike.

I just can't help myself. I don't race the bike, I just ride it. I know the limits of the front tire on my bike and how it reacts a little differently in rain than the Sync that is on the rear. And the same for the brake pads.

If I were going to gear up for a track day I would pony up the bucks and make it race ready. I do a lot of riding for my business with my Uly, and if it were strictly used for a fun bike I would not concern myself with discarding items that are not expended to their limits.

Oh man, I really AM a cheap bastard....arguing to defend my cheapness....I should be ashamed.

Fun is one thing. A motorcycle is a "margin of error" vehicle like no other. Brakes, tires, shocks, suspension, weight distribution, and yes even the wind resistance against the BAW all effect performance. A deficit in any of those areas can spell disaster.

The problem is that you never know when you are going to need maximum capability even in basic riding situations. You don't have to ride track days to need it. You round a corner and come face to face with Bubba and Jethro talking between pick-up trucks blocking both lanes after a blind right hander, you will need 100% of your brakes and tires (I don't know that their names are actually Bubba and Jethro. They were both named $hithead inside my helmet).

There is no cheap bastard first place. No one is going to give you a cookie for getting 42,000 miles out of a bald tire. Your brakes pulse like a mofo. I hope you never have a car or deer run across your path. You won't be able to stop. Period.

Ahhh, it will stop, I have faced some of those scenarios lately. If I didn't know what those stock parts were going to do in a tight spot I would have to change them immediately.

Most of the riding I do locally is 55 - 60 mph back and forth to town with few turns involved and in town stop light to stop light.

Did you notice that as you were making your fifth trip back and fourth on the Dragon, I did it once? I have raced nearly everything that runs on wheels at one time or another. I just don't need to use up equipment (or body parts) like that anymore. One good quick pass for a rush is good for me, I have little need to prove anything. There is no cookie waiting there either.

The B.A.W. is retired until the next cold crappy season, but Global Warming may postpone that this year if you believe too much of what you hear.

Before I would ride like we did from Nashvegas to the East, I would certainly have all of the items discussed up graded, and it will be so before I do my long ride this summer.

That is part of my reasoning for waiting the tire change also. I want the tires, brakes, fluids and service to be as fresh as possible when I head out. So far it looks like my mileage and timing will be right. I would rather be short tripping at home with a questionable but legal tire tread depth, than 1500 miles away when it becomes so.

I have a brand new Sync rear and MT60 front combo sitting in the garage that I will be trying out next. I'll get about 5k out of the rear 616. The front will get replaced because it just sucks even thought the tread looks like it would last to 15k. I went with the combo I did because I wanted a little more bite from the front on my sandy roads than the Sync front looked like it would offer, but the MT-60 rear treadlife is too short and the Sync rear has a good profile to it. I think (hope) the combo till work well.

I had a local buddy that got a really nice trip over the trunk of an elderly lady's Buick at 40 MPH.

He was able to haul it down to a speed that only totaled his bike.

Shite brakes and tires potentially remove that margin of error.

I rode the Gap as much as possible because I rarely get the chance to do so. I am virtually never the "fast guy". I am, though, a perpetual student of the art. I will beg, borrow and steal the abilities of others. Each pass on the Gap (as well as the subsequent runs at Suches) was an attempt to nail that perfect line. I ain't racin' anyone but myself and the ghost image of the rider I'd like to be.

I hope your schedule of parts replacement works out.

I'm only your Mom on alternate Tuesdays. ;)

The Uly has standard sportbike-sized wheels, so Metzeler has several sport and sport-touring tires that will fit. I hear good things about the Z6.

I have been running the crap out of a set of avon distanzias that are on my R80 while the Uly is still down. They handle fine, not slippery at all, great grip, but they do sound like one of those jacked up 4x4's with the mudder tires. They are loud. But not loud enough to drown out the fan.

That is what I've been running for over 8,000 miles now. The 616 front is still going at over 14,000 and I have been getting 6,000 out of a rear(a D616, a Sync, and another Sync now). When the front is no longer legal or some other issue claims it,(like a flat) it will be replaced by a Scorpion Sync.

These Perilli tires were on my City-X and I loved the way it handled and for the way I used them, I got real reasonable mileage from them.
