I can't find Loctite 271 (racks), 272 (chin spoiler) and 565 (oil drain plug)in any of our Auto/Sears stores. What are similar products in the Permatex brand? The Harley dealer said that Buell people use teflon tape on the drain plugs. Is that OK? |

I believe: Threadlocker 271 High Strength = Permatex® High Strength Threadlocker RED Threadlocker 272 High Temperature/High Strength = Permatex® High Temperature Threadlocker RED Thread Sealant Controlled Strength PST® Pipe Sealant with PTFE = Permatex® Thread Sealant with PTFE |

271 and 272 are very similar. 271 reduces migration of the liquid to the substrate. Both are high strength and for permanent applications. The color of the liquid is red. The Blue liquid is medium strength. Be careful because sometimes the small tubes are not the same color as the liquid. Red (high strength) is in a blue tube and blue (medium strength) is in a red tube. I use Permatex item #56521 to replace Loctite 565. I think they are them same product. I have them both and they appear the same and have the same odor. (Message edited by davo on April 08, 2007) |

Also, I would be cautious of using red on the chin spoiler because it needs to come off at oil changes. I just put some anti seize on the bolts and snug them down. The plastic washers tend to bind down pretty good. I have never found mine to loosen between oil changes. |

I would not use teflon tape on the drain plug. The tape is a sealant only. 565 is a sealant and a thread locker. I mean Buell already placed an o-ring on the plug for sealing, the 565 makes sure the plug is locked. So people, clean those threads on the plug and in the hole before using 565. |

One last thing, if you are going by the book be careful not to use oil drain plug torque spec. 12-14 ft-lbs. is plenty tight with 565. The book requires 29-34 ft-lbs. which is too tight and many have stipped out their threads. (Message edited by davo on April 08, 2007) |

I used teflon tape on the drain plug and thought it would be good. Until I went to change my oil and the drain plug had backed out about halfway. I now use the thread sealer on the plug. |

I bought it from McMaster. Also suggest going "Blue" for the chin fairing bolts. |
