I had a new set of the Avon Storm ST's mounted for MBIV, so I started with a completely new tire that still had mold release on it when I left home. I ran the tire 850 miles from doorstep to doorstep. It was rock steady. Dual Compound: The center compound appears to be harder than the Azaro the Storm replaces. This is good since I was getting just shy of 3,000 miles from the Azaros. The side compound is the real magic. The Azaros were pretty good (Mike the Bike beats his like a rented mule!) for cornering. They were not as sticky as other tires, but they were predictable and didn't slip or let go without letting you know they "were not comfortable with the current situation". The Storm ST's compound on the edges was noticeably stickier. I pushed them harder than I have the Azaros and the D616s before that and they never once let go. The only issues were with "tar snakes". They seemed a little squirmier than the Azaros with the tar. Wet traction: I was surprised at how well they stuck in the rain. The new Storms are supposed to have slightly higher silica content in the center compound than the Azaros. It showed. I didn't have a single wet road slip. I was pretty tentative at first, but by the end of the wet road section, I was able to follow a nearly normal pace. Would I buy it again? So far so good. The real question for me is durability. I'm interested to see what the mileage is from these tires. My front tires seem to be good for 10,000 miles, but the rears have been dead by 3,000. If I could get 4,000, it would be a 25% improvement. If I get an improvement in mileage, I will buy these again for sure. | ||

FT, Thanks for the review. Please add some pics when you can and update it when you pull them off so we can see how many miles they rolled. I think that the dual compound tire is a great idea. | ||

another distanzia in 120/70 17. They are advertising the distanzia in 160/60 and 120/70 17 as a supermoto tire. I have a set on my R80ST, and they are fine in all weather. I have a set in the garage waiting to be put on my Uly when the Shinkos are done. I wish I had gotten a softer compound than the Shinko Raven 009, they are wearing like iron, but handle like it too. I have reduced the pressure to 37/39 and it has helped, but they arent near as sticky as I would like. I am guessing the rear will last at least 8k maybe 10k miles, the rear has 5k and lots of tread left. | ||

"Gotta clean it first"......crazy I tell ya.......he rides the twistiest roads in the country and he has to hide the chicken strips!..............clean it first.........that's nuts....... | ||

Have those tires been used yet?? I think any wear on those tires is from rolling them across my garage floor before I mounted them for you. LOL!  (Message edited by chadhargis on April 05, 2007) | ||

I can personally attest that: (a) The gold wheels do look sweet on that Uly. (b) Those tires have been thoroughly leaned on throughout a Wolfpen Gap Road/129/19/60 loop starting and ending at TWO. (I had the good fortune to ride along with M2nc and Ft_bstrd at MB IV on Saturday afternoon.) | ||

Ft_b Mebby your tire wear issue is over! You have over 900 miles on these and unless you just smokem' off doing burn outs it looks like you might get 4000 plus! What do you think? Oh yeah, he was running a little light, as the gas build up from the burrito platter hadn't let loose yet.  | ||

I dunno about the mileage, but I would say that they are much less worn in much less time than the Azaros. We shall see. I was impressed with them for sure. | ||

Just put on a new rear Avon ST.. 0 miles; replaced an Avon Azaro. I got more mileage out of the Avon than the Syncs, Dumblops, and the Michelin Pilot Roads. I liked the Azaro so here goes an ST. | ||

Can anyone top this...? I'm replacing a rear Azaro AV46 with the new 56. But get this...I got 9,000 miles of this Azaro! I usually get around 8,000 or so...fronts double that. Yeah, it helps that I weight 145 lb and ride like an old lady. Except through the corners. | ||

I agree completely Dave. I was looking for an excuse to bag the tire for the last 25% of it's life. As soon as the wear bars appeared, I was pulling it off. It sucked! I'm hoping that the dual compound rubber will make a difference. | ||

Any further updates on the Storm STs? I've been checking out Michelin Pilot Road2 and Metzeler Roadtec Z6s. Michelin's are not available at the moment. I'm leaning towards the Avons over the Metzeler product. |
