yes, I recall you mentioning it was a bit rougher than you'd been expecting. I finally managed a shot that shows at least a little of the track. I figure you're jinxed though - you seem to have had all sorts of issues since then, and my bike hasnt acted up before, or since!?!?! Incidentally, I wont be moving north this year, so let me know if you want to try the back valley this year | ||

you're nuts! in a good way. i think i would be on my XR-400 for that road. my ride was 100 miles here in FL on the county roads, 80 degrees and no snow. | ||

I just went for a little 150 mile cruise up the highway on the Road King. Nothing special except the weather today is fabulous. Stopped at American Eagle H-D/Buell in Corinth on the way home and saw something encouraging. They had FIVE new Ulys in stock. Definitely looks like more of a commitment to Buell than I've noticed there in the past. Still didn't have anyone come talk to me while I was looking at them, though. | ||

Thelumox - lol - XR's are popular hereabouts, as are DRZ400's, DR650's, and KLR 650's. I get a lot of 'WTF' looks when folks see me up there on the CityX, but it works for me wasnt trying to be judgemental, either - just honest curiosity about how 'off road' others consider their Ulys to be. | ||

Rode out to Dillon Brother HD Buell with my 15year old son who rode his mother's Yamaha Radian. He has a learner's permit. We got clobbered by rain. Dillon's was just loaded with folks. They sell many, many bikes. | ||

Electraglider - riding with the kids sounds like an awesome way to spend a morning. Got a few years till mine are old enough for their own rides though. Fubar - painless is always good. I was kinda thinking the same thing when I managed the AM ride without dropping the X in the mud or rocks. ( see ride report with debueller from last september - it was very close to here where I dropped the bike upside down in the rocks along the edge of a creek) | ||

Ulendo, thanks for putting this in BB&D! My calculated usage is 97% pavement, 3% fire road, and 0.03% off road. I commute every day on my Uly. I can't tell you the last time I used my truck. Normally, if I ride on the weekends, I'll go out for the morning, by myself, and hit some paved twisties, and dirt/gravel fire roads. After some trial and error, mostly the latter, I now do my best to avoid mud. The Uly is a big bike, and I'm a pretty small guy; so, off pavement, there is usually no shortage of drama. Today, my wife and I rode up to Suches for MBIV. If anyone saw a Uly sporting a stuffed-bunny-rabbit backpack, well, that was my daughter and me. Aside from the gravel parking lot of T.W.O., we never left the pavement. But, this is not to say the day was without drama... Getting schooled by my wife on her MTS1000S was bad enough, but... We then did a loop of GA180/US19/GA60 with Ft_B. Somewhere on US19, my wife finally had enough, and passed me to take up the spot behind Ft_B. With her behind Ft_B, the pace quickened. My 616 front tire has 12k on it, and it wasn't showing me a lot of love in the corners today. When at "full" lean, the tire would have a pronounced drop-in or jittery feeling due to it's wear pattern. This feeling was really, really spooky. Spooky enough that I let an Suzuki I-4 and Duc 800 Supersport pass me, so that I could drop back and regain my composure. I eventually made up the lost ground, but yowzah! This was humbling. For future rides, I may just go off by myself again, so as to have fewer people witness my failures! If a Uly flounders in the woods, and nobody is there to see it... | ||

Ulendo, its always great to see your posts. I hope to do more off road this season on the Uly, but the necessity of using Sport touring tires (daily commuter) limits me a little. I use pilot roads as they seem to have decent enough bite to pull wheelies on hard pack dirt. My question is, how is your rear shock holding up with the pounding you give your Buell? Is it stock? Anyway, please keep the posts coming. I wanted a City X when I was looking at Buells, and let the salesman talk me out of it. From a financial standpoint it was really dumb for me to buy the Uly. shocks are 100% stock right now - in about 3 weeks, I'm going to do the 16k km ( 10k mile) service, and do the seals, but thats maintenance, not problems. worth noting though - #1) I'm a relatively small rider, and no way in hell will I double when playing on those backroads. 2) I've set up my suspension for dirt. lots of preload ( allows compression) and soft damper settings for compliant travel ( limits the hydraulic pressures inside the shocks) We need some sort of grading scale for non paved roads for these sorts of posts: in my terminology, parts of that track are 'forest service road', and parts of it are 2 track or worse. saw 3 guys in monster 4wd trucks taking their snowmachines up when I was coming down - the look on their faces is what its all about  | ||

L_Je, It was great to meet you and your wife. That was a great run. It was my first of the day. I liked it so much I did 6 more!  Convey to your wife my complements. She is a great rider. I wasn't sure if the pace was too much, but I got to see a lot of your wife's front tire. When you are first in line, it's a balancing act between riding at a pace that is fast enough for everyone to get their jollies but not so fast so as to make folks push beyond their abilities and comfort. I hope we reached that point together. Your front tire was classic D616. I would have been spooked by it as well. Stradas, Syncs, or Storms would be a vast improvement. Having your "ballast" move in the same direction as the rider wouldn't hurt either! I hope to get to ride with you guys again soon. Thanks again for the manual. | ||
