I'm not a huge fan of magazine specifications i.e. 0-60 and quarter mile times in determining my bike purchases. Hence my DRZ. However, the other day my friend and I took out our bikes (KTM950Adv and my Uly) for a spin. We ended up on a "closed course" area where we ran some impromptu drag races. Neither of us wanted to loop our bikes so we did 10mph rolling starts. The first run, I pulled away about a bike length and a half in the first few gears, and maintained it about to about 100mph, where we backed off, so we didn't run out of room. The second run, we switched bikes and had the same result, the Uly gained in the first few gears and held it to we backed off. Third run, switched back for the same result. Neither bike was stock, my Uly has a Race kit and the KTM has aftermarket pipes and jetting. The results were surprising to both of us as the Uly usually is behind the KTM in quarter mile/0-60 magazine tests. We came to the conclusion that this may be due to the difficulty in launching the Uly. Also the rolling start allowed the Uly's greater torque comes into play. We also determined the Race kit may give the Uly more of a power boost than the aftermarket pipes on the KTM. Either way I got to rub it in the rest of the day  My friend said the worst part of losing was listening to the HD sound as I pulled ahead | ||

Last year at Pacific Raceway in Kent WA: My bro's KTM 950S, 12.58ET My Uly, 12.97ET We are both about the same skill level. I think he gets a little better launch, my front wheel really tries to go skyward. (Message edited by debueller on March 22, 2007) | ||

I don't know about quarter mile times and the like, but I've been on many rides with high zoot sportbikes, and in the twisties, none run away from me. Yeah, in a long straight if they want to do 100+mph, I'm toast, but from 40 to 80mph, which is were I ride most, my Ulysses holds its own. Now, if Erik and company drop in a high zoot motor of their own in the already excellent chassis, well, that'd be fine too.  | ||

Ditto - I have ridden with a group of sport bikes a couple of weekends. These guys are a lot of fun with varying skill levels from Knee Draggers to Novice. The last weekend I rode with these guys there was a CBR600RR, SV650, GSX-R1000, R1 and a few others. At the end of the day, the liter bikes waved me on and only the 600s were pushing it a little harder than I cared to on the street. On the Drag Strip I ran against a GSX-R1000 on my M2. He finally caught me just as we were passing the eight-mile or almost 90mph. He left me from there. Ran a buddy on a Honda V65 and beat him three out of three on the M2. As for the Uly, I can't launch it like I launch the M2. The M2 is lower and longer and that is the advantage the KTM has over the Uly. The bigger torque curve of the Uly will allow it to take the KTM once going up to about 80mph where the higher revving KTM will even it up. Just my seat of the pants guestimation. | ||

My thoughts too..my buddy just bought a new 950KTM; I gave it a short rip and I thought...Hmmm....he gonna be surprised with my ULY..can't wait as he is a froggy sucker... | ||
