I feel very lucky to be able to meet with the Buell CS team this week. If there is anything in the way of questions or comments you guys want me to field to these guys, please let me know. I'm specifically looking for guys that have the pinging bikes, but I'lll listen to anyone, and try to sneak in any relivent comments. JS and AB, I look forward to meeting you, and perhaps getting to ride with you guys. I hope I can help. I promise not to get you guys stuck in too much traffic... How about a question about the right side air scoop? I know that this has been debated or discussed on this web but I would like a factory answer. Thanks |

Ask them: (Buell CS) Why does the fan run when the bike is traveling at high speed, even when ambient temperatures are cool, say less than 70F? Why is the running fan so loooooud? And, who though the loud fan was ok for production? |

How about: Why do sensor wires and the main harness rest on the rear cylinder? Along with the idle adjustment cable on the front cylinder? |

What can be done to make the rear spark plug and rear header bolts more accessible? For an adventure-touring motorcycle the footpegs are totally wrong-too small, no traction and too close to the seat. At least make an adaptor/extension to lower the pegs a couple of inches. Thanks very much. |

Kinda cool . . . how'd this come about? I spent a day with them on November 17th and was really impressed. |

Pso...I asked the same question at the factory when I was there for Homecoming. I was in a tech briefing with the Ulysses lead engineer. When I asked him about the right side air scoop, he said that it is not necessary and that the engine cools "very well". I've looked at the factory design, and while I'm not an expert on thermo dynamics or aerodynamics, it appears that the way the left scoop in combination with the fan is designed is to pull air through. Adding the right side scoop could possible disrupt the air flow. I don't know. I just trust the people who spent hours and hours working on the solution. My fan runs nearly nonstop once the bike gets hot. Even on a cold day. It doesn't bother me any more than the radiator fan running in my car. As has been said before, I get more worried when I DON'T hear it running. |

How about just the fan failure rate and what they plan to do? |

You were probably going to ask these already but How about why there seems to be pinging problems more with the 2006 models? Are there any pinging problems with the 2007 models? What has been done to fix others that were pinging. |

Speaking to CS, I was told that there weren't any reported 07's that ping, and that the pinging in the 06's were spread through the entire production year, so they couldn't narrow it down to say, one week of production. He did ask if the fan was going while I was getting the ping, and I honestly never made that mental note, so I couldn't provide a definitive answer there. I know it comes on a lot, but can't verify the relationship between the two. Court - I followed the ping on the boards for awhile after experiencing the ping myself. Although it can be hard to reproduce, especially when it's below 40, I sorta waited it out until it warmed up again. Now that it's warmer (in TX), I am experienceing pinging again, contacted CS, and they asked me to leave my bike at the dealer for diagnostics. It's been there two weeks now, and honestly - I'm jonesing to ride. So, now they are flying in to get a closer look. I'm hoping they find something before I get there, because I'm worried that the weather will cool off before I can get down there after work, and wont be able to reproduce what I've been experiencing. I don't want to walk away withough having provided them with some solid evidence. Thanks to everyone for giving me some input. |

I had ping and changed to the '07 airbox with flash and have not had ping since. Of course it has not been Summer yet here either.... (Message edited by BirdmanRH on February 28, 2007) |

If it were me, and folks from the factory were flying out to work on my bike because it is pining, all I would be trying to gather before they visit is a good recommendation where they can go for lunch or dinner. I would not try and become the unofficial customer liaison for all Buell owners everywhere (both here and on advrider). The thread is valuable, don't get me wrong. But you have likely already accomplished the feedback you were trying to accomplish. They have the Internet in East Troy now . Having done some professional travel for technical investigations, its a fairly major PITA. I typically needed every millisecond available (and then some) to solve the problem I was called in to solve. Whenever my customer (in my case, a General Electric group near Milwaukee) tried to change the scope after I had planned my attack, it seldom helped the "new" problem at all, and generally screwed up my ability to properly solve the original problem pretty completely. |

That's EXCELLENT advise. I know who is coming and he is incredibly capable. I'd suggest he be left alone to conduct his investigation and do whatever he needs to do. I'd be cordial and hospitable and understand that he'll want to do his work free from folks looking over his shoulder and introducing new twists, turns and so forth. Be cognizant of what he CAN and CAN NOT do and that he may be very limited in what he can say. He's good . . . VERY GOOD. Create and environment that allows him to shine. Court |

Great advice from both of you. I work in IT and often go on site to solve a critical issue only to be bombarded with people asking me how to create a shortcut to an application, how to bookmark a web page, etc. Nevermind that I'm there to engineer a network or server and get it up and tested. Suzie Q is more interested in finding out why her daughter's boyfriend's computer doesn't have Solitare installed. Over the years I've learned to allow for twice as much time as I really need to do the job because of all the distractions. It costs the company more money, but at least I don't make the end user mad by giving the the blow off. It's still very frustrating though. |

Remind me . . . this afternoon when I hit the library . . . and I'll share a real Buell story that will tie a few of these thoughts together. |

I agree. I considered this while I was reading through all this. There are some specific things that I was looking for information wise. I want to limit as much about our meeting as I could to the task at hand, but also have a little more knowledge about the problem. Thus maybe revealing something I hadn't thought of yet. (If you guys at Buell are reading this) I'm not going to bring a list with me tomorrow, and I don't plan on showing off 'my brilliance and product knowledge' & wasting a lot of time. |

I genuinely hope they find something beyond dealer error. I have spoken to those two individuals regarding my Pinging Uly and they were both Genuinely interested in solving the issue. My bike was found to have advanced timing (first step in deduction)four degrees worth. After a 300+ mile ride Saturday I could not get the bike to Ping. Yesterday I took it out for @ 50 miles; rolled on the throttle from 3k in second gear only to have the bike pull strong WITHOUT ping up to 6k. Hopefully your results will be similar. NUTS |

I am sitting in a hotel right now waiting for parts to be delivered for a Tech service job. I agree with the other guys. Let him focus on your problem, and I am sure he would like the company for dinner, especially if you were to buy Grilling him with lots of questions will probably make him feel a bit used, so just share riding stories, and you may get way more information. |

Just a teaser: The guys were snowed in this morning, and made it to Austin late. The local territory rep (if I remember correctly) was there, and we went over what I was experiencing, and took a ride. At first, I couldn't get the bike to ping, so I told the guy I would ride around some more and see what happened. Sure enough the second we split up... ping! So,We managed to get the bike to ping (I'm not crazy!), and he was able to replicate it when he took it out for a ride. First step. So, tomorrow, they want to put it on the dyno, and run some more tests. Sorry I don't have anything more definitive yet, but we did manage to verify that this can be replicated at the 3k and up range (and not by loading up a whole lotta throttle at low RPM). I would have loved to wait around, instead of sit in traffic for an hour and a half back to the house, and buy those guys some good mexican food. Instead, because they were so far out, I recomended some good ritas, and conchanita. Hope they check it out, it's worth it. |

Hey ChadHargis... Seeing as how you are in IT, I was wondering if you heard of SolarWinds by chance? I just started a new gig there and was wondering what you thought of the company? (Message edited by ihavemanyfleas on March 01, 2007) |

Yeah...I've heard of SolarWinds. I use their free IP calc all the time as well as their TFTP server. They've got some cool tools...care to smuggle some out for me?? |

I wish I could, but for now I'll keep my job... I'll sell you some, though... I've been pretty impressed with them internally. Last year, and I mean months ago, there were about 24 employees, now 90... It's cool to be a part of it. I'm having to relearn all the network stuff I had to replace with accounting the last 9 years. Tech is much more interesting than accounting. No word from Buell today. I called the dealer at 6 and they never returned my call... so maybe tomorrow... I'm itching to ride. They are trying to decide what to do still... I spoke with buell today, and they are trying to determine a best coarse of action to address the issue. Maybe a free teeshirt... j/k it seems they want some more time on it to dig in a little deeper... so for the time being, I'm sacrificing some great riding weather! I'm sure they'll do the right thing... |

This thread got me to go out to the garage and check the timing on my 05 9sx (15k miles now, a good time to check it). Man. I can see how it's easy to do it wrong. That's a fairly twitchy setup, and it invites all sorts of ill considered shortcuts (which I am still trying ). |
