When I hit the throttle when I am in neutral or when the clutch is in, it seems to be taking a long time to return to idle RPM after I release the throttle.

Before, it was almost an instant return to idle RPM when I let up on the throttle. Now it takes 1/2 of a second (or so). I have had this problem (if it is a problem) ever since my engine was rebuilt to address the ping problem.

Any ideas what is causing this and should I care?

Is the throttle itself binding? Check this with the engine off, by turning the throttle. Mine had a bit of bind at the end, which was solved by lubing the throttle cables.

If this isn't the case I would look for an intake leak.

Check the idle speed. If it is a little too high, it will take a while to come back down.

1050 RPM has been just a little too high for my bikes and some others that I know of. It causes the idle to "float" down. Try setting your idle at 1000 or a little less as an experiment.

When setting the idle speed, try to keep it as close to 1050 as possible.

I understand much below that amount provides insufficient "spin" to the charging system.

Idle is set too high. But it may not show itself with a high idle speed as well. My observation is that the ECU can use ignition timing to control idle speed.

Turn the idle adjuster down maybe a half turn or a turn. Shut the bike off, restart, and see if it's better. Repeat until either the idle starts to drop *after* the restart, or the issue goes away.

Im idling away happily at around 950, tho do notice it to take half a sec or a bit more to return to that if i hold it around 3000 for a few secs in the garage in neutral & just let the throttle go. I have always just put that one down to 'nature of the beast' along with a few other quirks. Not concerned at all!

My Uly has had the same problem ever since they reflashed ecm to 07' spec because of an opened up air box cover. I was told(here) it might be tps related. Mine only manifests itself when fully warmed up. Dealer checked for air intake leak using the digital technician. Said it didn't have leak but is that the final word on leakage???

They checked my intake leak the old fashion way. Carb cleaner at the leak spot. Killed the engine.
