No, but I can run my $600 Treo (really $300) through my $800 (actually $690) Zumo via BlueTooth!

Seriously, I considered running the GPS and MP3 functions through my PDA/Phone, but I wanted something waterproof so that I would not have to worry when the rain comes (and it will come), and it ends up that I am really lovin' the whole XM radio stuff.

But that may just be me, I love gadgets!

So how does that pocket pc hold up in the rain when using it as a gps? just wonderin'

My 2610 doesnt mind an all day rain, and neither did my gpsV.

Well of course that's the downfall of the pocket PC in that it is not weatherproof. The bluetooth GPS receiver is also not weatherproof. However, the audio navigation through the e2c earbuds works great even while listening to music because the volumes can be adjusted seperately. So as long as I keep it in my pocket out of harms way, all is good. The Bluetooth GPS receiver is very small and I plan to make a small shelf in the top of my tail bag to keep it from harms way. You could also put it in the map-holder of your tank bag. There's always a way....

Sanchez, VDSTS for handhelds can be downloaded but you still need to buy the kit in order to get the cable and dongle.

My Ipaq is running windows mobile 5.0 and it has no problems running multiple apps at once.

So far, I'm happy with my decision and still think I saved some bucks but of course every year new stuff comes out with more/better features. I now see that Ipaq has come out with a new model that has built-in GPS as part of it's standard features. They call it a travel companion and it costs less than my current setup did.....Ah well, whatcha gonna do...

I am running a Garmin 376C that has xm and also the weather. I have found on several occassions that I was able to skirt around some storm cells using the weather feature and once was able to wait in a cofe shop before departur fo ra storm to pass over. I also have an escort 8500 wired in through a device that allows the radar detector to overide the xm radio (sold by Kennedy electronics if anyone is interested I will get web address). I also use the Shure earbuds that jackbequick talks about above, however I installed the sleeves from a set of ear plugs sold by aerostich that provides a very good seal and comfort for 10/14 hour days. I also use when traveling with my fiance (she is on her f650gs) a cb and autocom unit. I also use the cb for my annual two week trip with two friends. A lot of this is a compilation from my days with a Kaw, Concours and then goldwing.It was also a requirement for me that the whole set-up can be removed from the bike very quickley, and tossed into one of the bags.

Stevem123, glad your enjoying your pda setup, I have a similar rig using a IPAQ 1940 with a bluetooth GPS with TOM TOM nav 5. I bought a "Otterbox" waterproof case for it with a handlebar mount. In theory a good idea, but I wouldn't do it again! The IPAQ is too fragile and you can't read the screen in the sun, the otterbox is ok but pretty bulky and I had to modify it to get my 12v power cord to work. It also likes to crash at critical moments requiring me to stop and and fart around with the paring for 20 minutes. Just too complicated and too many little fiddly parts! GPS on a motorcycle has to be tough and simple so when it is pouring rain / snow and midnite on some abandoned road you just don't throw it in the ditch!

I think I want a Zumo.....

I went a different route in terms of powering the unit off the bike. I terminated the power lead with a cigarette plug



This option allows me to use the Zumo on my other bike

The zumo 450 page says "available 1st Quarter, 2007" which means it should be available soon, a web search does not turn up any for sale yet.

But don't forget, street prices on the zumo 550 are down around $700 and the MSRP on the zumo 450 is $857. It will take awhile for the 450 to get cheaper than the 550. My guess is that the 450 might get down to $500 or so but it might take a year or so.

So if you're going to buy a zumo, the 550 will be the better buy for at least a while.

The difference between the 450 and 550 is that the 450 will not be XM radio, XM traffic, or XM weather capable, and it will not speak the names of streets and POIs, and it will not come with both motorcycle and car mounts. On the 450, you'll still get on screen and spoken turning prompts, but the names of the streets not be spoken.

Hey supertoon,
The reason for the crashes could possibly your operating system needs the upgrade. I found mine was in need and part of the upgrade was for bluetooth connectivity. It's downloadable from the HP site.

I looked at those waterproof cases but like you said they are bulky at best.

I mounted my receiver using velcro to the inside top of my trunk bag and tested it over the weekend. It worked great even though the receiver is upside-down! I played tunes and set the nav for a destination I wasn't familiar with. It got me there with no problems just following the voice prompts. I even took a different route and the nav system re-routed my destination once it figured out I wasn't going to turn around. LOL!

I'll try to post some pics soon as I can find my digital camera......forgot where I put it.

I just don't see the need to mount a bunch of bulky stuff to the handlebars when I can carry the PDA in my shirt pocket. If I need to fiddle with it then I pull over anyways. Distractions are a no-no on a bike!

Hi all,

Just got my Zumo in this week and really liked the way Rhinowerx connected his to the power outlet, using a modified coiled cord. I would like to do a similar thing but am wondering about the fuse protection in the adapter and the weatherproof issues. Is there a place to get the adapter with coiled cord that has the right fusing and weatherproof?

The zumo takes a 12-24 VDC input and regulates the power internally. It looks like what Jack did was to find a DC outlet plug with a coiled cord and then he cut off his regular cord and spliced the coiled cord in. If you do the splice right and cover it with adhesive lined heat shrink tubing it will be waterproof. It looks like Jack did that.

There is typically a fuse inside the plug on those. That should take care of all concerns on fusing.

Good point Steve, worth a try! I do like the Tom Tom interface. Do you run your pda off the onboard battery or do you hook it up to the bikes 12 v. I have a splitter that supplies 12 v power to the pda and the Bluetooth GPS receiver. The hassle on a hot days is the battery over-heats and freezes the system. With TOM TOM you also have to do your trip planning on the PDA which is a royal PITA.
I have not just relied on the verbal directions yet, kinda like to see the funky 3d map view, but I will have to give it a try....

I wish that I would have thought about pick up the power from under the flyscreen. But I brought the power up from the battery. Which was a pain taking up the air box base plate and all. Pics to follow.

Have we arrived at a favored mount for the Zumo yet? I confess I'm getting the Zumo bug again and it may impact an upcoming undertaking.

We should consolidate (perhaps they are) the Zumo threads. Someone had a very sano install a while back.

I'm interested in seeing if I can wrangle up, based on badweb threads, the best:

  • Luggage arrangement
  • Zumo mounting and programming
  • Lighting arrangement

For lighting, I did the HID conversion on my 9sx. It worked very well and I dont regret it, it would have been even easier on a Uly, lots more places to hide the ballast.

That being said, for less money, I probably could have built up a replacement for the whole headlight assembly made out of metal. Some sort of off the shelf Hella part bolted side by side with a simple hidden bracket of some sort... and used higher power conventional lights. More time, less money.

The piece on the handlebar in Bearly's photos is the mount base that can be used that way or it can replace the clamping part on a clutch or throttle housing (putting the mount off to one side).

He could have also used one of the U-bolt bases there and it may have been a little more compact. I used the U-bolt style base on my Dyna and trimmed the U-bolt ends to length. The mount is not at all obvious with nothing is on it.

Lots of options with all the different RAM parts.

I'm thinking it'd be cool to do a Uly with the works. . . complete ZUMO w/bluetooth, XM and so forth. . . luggage. . . killer lights . . . heated grips . .

On my mount, I was trying to get it as low as possible and maybe give it some protection from bugs and rocks by getting it behind the wind screen just a little.
The other suggestions sound great though, and I think I'm going to change the power to be switched with the key, since the Zumo's run for nearly four hours on their own battery. The Garmin 30/30 antennae is next for weather! I have to do more research though to see if your route can be over laid with NexRad Radar.

Court: The Zumo is awesome! I ride every day, and every day I ride with the Zumo with XM radio. In may normal commute to work and around town, I don't really use the GPS navigation functions. But I listen to the radio even on short trips, and the XM weather is also handy on most days.

I think that you are also on the right track regarding your thoughts of a new Uly...Zumo with XM is a must, the factory luggage is very handy, extra lights provide great function and style to fit your taste, and the heated grips are priceless (I personally love the Polly Heaters).

Bearly: Connect the Zumo to the 12 volt accessory plug wire, not right up against the back of the plug, but a little down stream to give you self more room to splice. Now, as far as the XM weather, you do not get the NextRad radar with this service. It was a little disappointing to me (like this news will probably be to you) but the add-on traffic and weather service only costs an extra $3 per month, so it is a reasonable price for the extra services.

Now here are some close ups of my mounting.

This is what it looks like mounted in the center of the Uly's crossbar, I really like this location.




I used these 99 cent pipe clamps from Lowe's to mount the Zumo cradle to the crossbar.

Maximum: Yes yes, I was hoping for a live precipitation overlay. I thought it would be handy to see if I could just go through the next little rain shower or have to put on the gear.

That being said, what kind of weather do you get with the weather service. TAF's, Metars or just some weather channel Icons? I'm just getting XM weather on my EFB's at work which includes precip overlay, but as you can imagine it is expensive.
Your installation looks great! I hadn't thought of putting the 30/30 antennae on the bars.

Bearly: Don't try to compare it to aviation type weather, think of it more as a "The Weather Channel" for your bike. It has basic current and forecast weather, plus advisories that pop up when there something more severe going on with the weather. It is very basic, but still handy. I would be willing to pay a little more for the NextRad, but you just can't get it on the Zumo.
