Hello all... just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm new to buells and to this site. I just started riding again after a 4 year lay-off and it's been a great! (I used to ride a Ducati Monster 750 back then) I just purchased a Uly and love it. well, everything was going great until a had nasty spill last week. I had the bike less than two weeks! I was zipping around all day getting stuff done and I guess I got a little over-confident because I kept using more and more throttle anyway after my last stop I had about 50 - 60 lbs loaded on the back of the bike and took off in a hurry... I was parked on the sidewalk and as the back wheel cleared the sidewalk and jumped down, the next thing I saw was sky! I didn't even have time to react or cover the back brake! The bike went up so fast the by the time I knew what was going on, the tail section was already scraping the ground and I was off the bike scraping my a$$ as well! Then the bike came down on the right side HARD. I was able to limp the bike home but i could tell the steering was off. Good thing I had insurance on it cause it looks like the damage is gonna quite alot considering the swing arm was damaged as well as the forks and exhaust. So that's my story... Man these bikes love lifting that front wheel don't they! Just thought I'd share this with everyone here. |

Yep! The 54" wheelbase doesn't help, in keeping the front end down, either... (Message edited by teeps on September 08, 2006) |

Keep us posted on the damage. Typically the XB's take a slow speed crash quite well. Sounds like a pretty ugly get off. Hopefully your a$$ still works. |

Sorry to see your first post is bad news. Hopefully you weren't hurt too bad. I read a story about Erik Buell lifting the front wheel on one of the test Uly's not realizing the rear case was full of water bottles and ice. The load shifted and he went down too. So, I don't think you are first and most likely not the last to loop his Uly. |

Welcome to BadWeB! Sorry to hear about the spill you took, but you should have many happy miles ahead of you! Just beware the low end torque of your Buell! |

Thanks all... It looks like the damage will be covered by the insurance company. Yeah it was kinda embarassing; there were a couple of people out there right away that saw the whole thing and helped me get the bike up and out of the road. One of them asked if I was trying to do a wheelie (which he said looked good until I spilled). the only thing that was hurt was my pride and my tailbone... that started to hurt after a couple of hours, I guess when the adrenaline wore off... Oh well, Live & learn, I guess I will be taking it easy for at least a while. I still think this is one of the best bikes out there... just got to get used to it I'll keep you posted on how things progress. (Message edited by xduc on September 08, 2006) |

Highly unlikely that such a crash would hurt the chassis alignment. The off steering you noticed is probably just a bent/tweaked handle bar. Hope you are back in the saddle very soon. Welcome to BadWeB! |

Welcome also to BadWeB where hopefully you'll absorb a lot of educational material. Including how to accustom yourself to a new $12k motorcycle and its traits. A four-year layoff should be enough reason to consider oneself a "newbie" and proceed with some restraint for a reasonable time and/or miles. Especially with a new machine with 30% more power... Unsympathetic here, glad you're not hurt but sorry for the Ulysses. It did nothing wrong. |
