Test run with all connected and I established a AFV of 105.3. Then I disconnected the VSS and made the same test run, this time in 4th gear at 55 mph instead of 5th gear at 55mph. I was trying to get the AFV to change. After the run, the AFV was still 105.3! My conclusion is that without the VSS connected the ECM does not learn new values. Also, with the VSS disconnected the AFV does NOT default back to 100. The value is as it was last established with the VSS connected. A final observation that can not be verified without further testing; the removal of the VSS does NOT prohibit closed loop. So I can manipulate AFV as it pertains to open loop. I then pulled the O2 and the VSS and the AFV stayed at 105.3 and everything was happy. No lights or codes and surging was all but eliminated. Lots of smiles as well. I hated to hook it back up but I did. Please do not try this at home or outside of closed course activities! More testing on a wide band equipped dyno is needed. Now you dyno dudes can pick up the ball and run with it. |

So you'd still recommend the Race ECM instead, as it allows everything to function, just better? |

I have no experience with the race ECM. The purpose of my pursuit is to better understand the stock ECM as a tuners aid and for trouble shooting. I want a motorcycle that is durable, strong and as clean burning as possible. Tuning for performance is not nearly as difficult as balancing the the three characteristics which I seek. I have some experience working on closed course machines and they compromise durability and clean burning for performance. If my Uly had not pinged, cut off and surged, then I would not have had to fully understand it's operation. Though it has been fun and I have enjoyed Badweb. |

Now you dyno dudes can pick up the ball and run with it. Is anyone doing this? Did you just button it back up and retard your timing and that's it? |

I have to admit, it *is* a bit humorous to end up in the same place as an old-school tactic would land you: if it pings, nothing else is wrong, retard the timing a tad. Of course, 'old-school' wouldn't be able to tell you all the other good info above... |

Aeholton, I corrected the pinging months ago. I was just following up on a lead that I picked up on a mod in Chrisw's post, "and that white wire removed from ecu connector block". When I asked around, others thought I was referring to the exhaust servo wire, but there is another white wire. My results might be gold or garbage and only time and a dyno will tell. The timing issue was actually another saga all together. If you hook up the Buell to a variable light and watch the VDSTS front spark advance values then you will see what I observed. Make sure you are at least 307F and idling. The VDSTS will show zero advance but the mark will not be visible with a straight up (non-variable)light! It is just entering the window to the left which is about 7.5 early. Maybe this should have it's own thread. 48 hours and nobody has supported or discredited my results. Go figure, next time I will test which color is faster. It must be a sign of the times. Davo out (Message edited by davo on September 14, 2006) |

I was hoping it would keep going too. I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on it. However, I appreciate the education so far. I was hoping someone like Al Lighton would chime in, since I believe he has had run his Uly extensively on a dyno. When the thread first started, I thought someone had figured out how to run the Uly in continuous "open loop" operation. |

I was hoping too, but I jumped the gun. However if we can enter a AFV value that is fixed for open and closed loop then what is the difference? |

Carbs are like open loop squared when it comes to emissions. Without evaporative add ons the float bowls perk off HCs 24/7. Their AFR delivery map is a curve and an EFI map looks like the Moon's surface. EFI is the way to go. The problem is the combustion chamber and I don't like 14.7 to 1, with 10% ethanol, 50+ degrees of spark advance and 98F+ degree days. The solution is clear and the paths are many. |

Davo, Why put the bike on a dyno to determine AFR when for the price of several dyno runs you can get your own wideband and monitor the AFR under real world riding conditions including WOT? It's also difficult to get a sniffer up into a place where you can read the AFR properly, you need to remove the exhaust to get the sniffer into the collector at least. |

Opto, I will get a wide band soon. My newest challenge is to watch for changing loops and document the change. I am confident that I have acquired two conditions: 1. Fixed AFV for open loop and still maintain normal closed loop activity. 2. Fixed AFV for open and closed loop. I think I can see open loop start and then the change to closed loop but I can't see the change back to open loop. A dyno would be nice because I am preparing to input artificial data for the O2. In short determine the O2 to AFV relationship. Then I need to figure out a quick way to do a AFV reset to my predetermined value not just 100 as current software permits. I would be nice if the VDSTS or DirectLink would facilitate a selectable AFV reset. Someone will soon if I am right about freezing the AFV. Could you send me a link for the wideband that you use? Send me a pm. I am going to keep this thing wrapped up until I got it on paper. |

Davo, Thanks for sharing your efforts. I think most of us are a bit lost in the technology and are unable to contribute. But we do share great interest in what you are doing. Please do not get frustrated and stop posting on this. I for one am fascinated with the possibility here. |
