It's been a couple of years since I sold my XB9S, and posted on this board. I always thought it was just a little cramped, and not quite the right bike for me. But, I loved riding it. For about two years I browsed over different bikes, and decided that I wanted an 'adventure bike.' So, when Buell released the Uly... I drooled... for months. Today I picked it up from Central TX HD. After a little negotiation, and contemplation... I pulled the trigger on it, and there it sits in my garage. That being said... I wanted to re-introduce myself to the board, and ask if anyone has any immediate recommendations on what I should mod/fix right off the bat... But mostly... it feels great to be back on 2 wheels! | ||

1. Adjust the headlights. 2. Add the jumper between the yellow and blue wires in the high beam switch housing to make both headlights come on together when hi-beam is selected. 3. Set up suspension per OM. 4. Buell Traction Grips. 5. Dual-Star grip heaters. 6. Deluxe Tank Bag. 7. Cee-Baileys +2.5" wind screen. | ||

"No mods needed right off the bat." Ye have much faith, or your dealer rocks. My suspension was set up for a small child and my headlights pointed at the front tire. | ||

Ye have much faith, or your dealer rocks. No faith in dealer. I just don't count adjustments as modifications. Of course he should make sure tire pressure is correct, fluids where they should be and suspension set up for the weight he is carrying. | ||

Tire pressure and oil should be checked before each and every ride. One might not think to check the headlight adjustment or suspension set-up. Geez, I was just trying to be helpful based upon my knowledge of the difficulties myself and others have had with these things upon delivery of a new Uly.  | ||

I am on my first week with a new Uly. I found the transition from a metric bike more interesting than I expected. After a few days I adjusted some of the slop out of the throttle cables. This helped me not feel like a complete lid trying to adjust to the new lower torque. The headlights needed adjusting. I still am trying to find out how to raise the highbeam lamp alone. Its seems to be lower than the low beam for some reason. Raised the idle a little to about 1070. After these few adjustments I am feeling a little more at home. Sure rides nice!!! | ||

** Sorry for the Hijack ** Lowflyer, did you have any problem installing the dual-star heaters with the traction grips? My set of traction grips came with the grip already installed on the throttle sleeve, and I'm having a tough time getting them separated without wrecking the grip. Any advice here? | ||

Yes, I ran into the same thing. I peeled the grip off the sleeve manually. They didn't use much adhesive from the factory, so it came off with some effort. I learned after that ordeal that compressed air shot under the grip is supposed to be very effective at removing the grip from the sleeve. I would try that next time for sure. | ||

Mine is bone stock, except for the low seat and Avon Azaro tires. I've managed to put 13,000 miles on so far, and I can't think of any necessary modifications. Ride it for a while, then decide what changes would make it a better bike for you. | ||

Compressed air from a blow nozzle, directed between the grip and the handlebar / sleeve. It will float the grip right off the bar, like an air hockey puck. | ||

At almost 13,000 miles I put on the low seat and Diablo Strada Tires. FT BSTD & Crusty how are the Avons? Have you ever tried the Pirellis? Are the Avons better? If not... How is the mileage in comparison to the D616? How are they in wet conditions? How do they do over road surface grooves & tar strips? I like the Pirellis okay but do not think they are the best. They remind me of the Dunlop K505 Bias-ply tires I had on my Honda. They had good grip and mileage, but slips on tar strips and followed every groove in the road. | ||

Hey M2nc, I had a set of the Avons on mine and I did like them. Mileage was good also. I wore them out prematurly with my heavy hand and our abrasive mountain roads but they lasted longer than any others I have tried so far. Now I'm running Metzeler ROADTEC Z6s and although the mileage may not be as good (still running them) they are by far better handling than any other tire I've tried. I didn't get to try the Avons on wet roads so I can't help there. I do believe they would be fine though. BC Steve | ||

Since install, I have been able to put on about 350 miles. I LOVE the Azaros. They have been sticky from minute one. I got to try them today in the rain. They performed very well. The best thing I can say about them is that they are completely predictable. There was never a surprise in how they handled. They stuck where I wanted them throughout. | ||

Thanks for the pointers here. So far I've just added the parking light, rotated the controls down a tad, moved the lights up (so they actually point at the road instead of my fender), and adjusted the suspension. I'm thinking about doing the following at some point soon: Stearing Damper Heat Shield (anyone have more info on this? I've seen pics of wrapped pipes, but haven't found much info on them) HID Conversion/Extra lighting Tank bag/tail bag (I don't have the cases - yet). What are y'all using in these areas? I just bought the first generation tank bag from an ADVRider member. I also just bought the heat shield from Special Ops. I am using the HID conversion kit from Rider Warehouse ($200 installed). I'm really digging the Deluxe Tank Bag. I have a cheap Fieldsheer tail bag that works great, but has faded quite a bit even though it only sees the sun when I am riding since I park it in a garage at home and at work. It's functional, but looks like crap. I have heard good things about the Ventura bags at American Sportbike. I haven't had the need for HID or a damper, but then that $600 will likely be used toward a set of Touratech-style cases which is on my list. I have never liked the factory cases. Heat hasn't bothered me much so heat shielding seems unnecessary so far for me. | ||

I've had mine now for a little over two weeks. It just went in for it's 1000 mile service yesterday. I've only adjusted the suspension and added the Buell case system. But a new Zero Gravity wind screen in on its way to me. In the future I plan on adding: Grip Heaters Race ECM/Drummer/Race Filter Tourtech Hand Guard Extenders Bigger Top Case GPS Mount And as of right now.. I just ride the thing and enjoy it. | ||
