I'm going to put the Uly to an extreme test next week.

I will be headed out to Niobrara, Neb. this coming Sunday. (670 miles). No big deal, yet.

Tuesday morning a group of 75 long distant riders will start a 7 day endurance event, called ButtLite IV. (www.teamstrange.com)
At the moment, all I know is that the event will start and end in Niobrara. There are checkpoints during the event, but the riders will not know where they are until the rally packets are distributed. Probably at the mandatory meeting on Monday.

From reading previous ride reports, I can expect somewhere around 8,000+ miles in seven days.

The ButtLite IV rally is run similar to the National Iron Butt rally. Collect bonus points along whatever route you plan, make it to the checkpoints on time, document your mileage, fuel stops. Whomever collects the most bonus points, is the event winner.

Route planning is pointless at this point, since we don't know where we're going. All the rally masters have said is that you don't have to cross into Canada or Mexico to complete the rally. (That doesn't mean that crossing the borders could save time.)

I just changed the fluids, put new tires on. Bike is running perfectly. I know I can do 3 back to back 1000+ days. The other four days will be new territory for me.

I hope to have a successful ride report in about two weeks.

Wish me luck.

BienHoa-Bob

p.s. Bien Hoa was a place that I was at when I turned 21. Hint: look north of Saigon or Ho Chi Minh city as it is called today.

I was real close to Niobrara just the other day on Sunday and I was on the ULY. We went up to Ashfalls State Park which is maybe 25 miles south of Niobrara. Been to Niobrara a couple of times. It overlooks the Missouri river and is quite scenic. What size windshield is that??

That's a CeeBaileys 16". I like it a lot.
I'm 5' 9 1/2" (unless I'm shrinking in my old age) and had the seat lowered. Wind hits the top of my helmet. No neck trouble during long days in the saddle.

Good luck bob. Wish I could play! I will be able to do multi day events when they start having them in June or July or the year 2030 which ever comes first. LOL

Bienhoabob-I also like the keg you have on the back of the bike. Looks like you will be able to party at the end of your trip but don't you suppose the beer will get warm?:0
How much does it hold and what do you expect your range before refuling to be now? Have you noticed a differenc in mpg with the larger screen? Have you made any other changes to the bike for longdistance work? How about electronics, etc.? Are you running the stock tires? I noticed the RS air scoop, has that helped much? also the extra lights look good. the pegs do not look like the OEM's on my computer and how effective are the additional hand guards? I know that you are on your way out but perhaps those are some of the details you will be able to include in your ride report? Inquiring minds want to know.
good luck and be safe
thanks

Paul

Paul, Here's a list of additions.

1) Michlelin Road Pilots (wore out the rear616 at 8,222 miles)
2) Motolights
3) HVMP bar ends
4) TourTech hand guard extensions (suppose to deflect the wind while riding in the rain. Have yet to get caught in a downpour, I'm sure that will change in the next week.)
5) Garmin 2610, 2gb memory with all North America roads downloaded.
6) Buell Tank Bag
7) Heated grips
8) RS air scoop, just put it on. Should be riding in temps around the 100 degree mark. Fan still "regulates", but did notice that heat on pants is less. Must be directing the heat away from the upper leg.
9) Special Ops heat barrier
10) Lowered Stock seat w/Pro Pad
11) 3.5 gal aux. tank. (www.tourtank.com) That gives me 7.9 gals. @ 50mpg = 395 miles. @ 45mpg = 355 mile range. Worst mpg has been 42.5. That was going thru Texas at about 80 into strong headwinds) IronButt rule requires stopping for gas no longer than 350 miles. (Safety concern)
12) an assortment of riding comfort/safety clothing. Harley FXRG jacket, Joe Rocket pants, Harley mesh jacket w/drinking system, bicycle riding shorts, fog shield on HJV helmet.

That's about it along with the basic tire repair kit, cycle pump, flashlights, batteries, first aid kit, paper maps (if GPS fails), polaroid camera for bonus documentation, and cloths for hot and cold weather.

If the bike holds up, then I'll have to worry about my body breaking down.
What keeps me going on these rides is thinking of the sacrifices the POW's of all wars went though as well as the sacrifices that our current troops are going though. A little fatigue, discomfort, "Ain't nothin' but a thing"

P.S.
Pegs are stock
Jeremy, I need some of your rally skills.

Bienhoobob,
Try 2 aspirin/tylenol/ibuprofin each morning and 2 at night to stop soreness and fatigue. That and the small amount of caffine they have will get you through the long days to come. Just a tip from some Ironbutt riders I travel with.

BHB,
Spent a wonder filled summer on the Perfume River so I know where you are coming from.
Try 2 Tylenol/aspirin/ibuprfin or some like product in the morning and at night. The soreness and aches will go away and the small amount of caffine will help. These tips are from several Iron Butt riders I travel with and they work.

I hear the padded spandex bicycling shorts under your clothes help too.

Bob,
I see you took the aux tank out of the tail pack...I like it.
Best of everything during your rally. Should you need anything and in the Eastern NC area give me a shout. I will PM you with my numbers.
Standing by for a great finish & report, wishing I could come out to play too.
Tim

Yeah, the tank is out of the box. I kept smelling gas vapors even though I put four venting holes in the case. That and the extra time it took to unlock and relock the case was slowing me up on the gas stops.

It's nice and simple now.

Thanks for the PM. The only way I will call you is if I'm broken down in your area. Hopefully I wouldn't need too.

Retirement is the life for me. No way I could take long multi-day rides while I was in the workforce.
